Game information and Q&A from Team Ninja's Yosuke Hayashi.

Below is the complete transcript of the Dead or Alive roundtable, from the Nintendo 3DS Preview Event in Amsterdam. It features Team Ninja's Yosuke Hayashi, who is the game's producer with the assistance of a translator. The conversation topics include: the controls, the gameplay modes, the multiplayer, StreetPass, and the effect of 3D on the Dead or Alive franchise. Some of the translations are paraphrased for clarity.

Moderator: We're delighted to have our final presenter, Mr. Hayashi from Tecmo Koei Team Ninja. You have heard a little bit about Dead or Alive Dimensions earlier in the day, during the big presentation. But actually, hopefully, you'll hear a lot more about now and have the opportunity to ask a few questions. So, Mr. Hayashi.

Yosuke Hayashi (via translator): My name is Hayashi from Tecmo Koei Games, Team Ninja. I mentioned this earlier that the Dead or Alive series dates back to 1996, but actually in the past five years there hasn't been a new Dead or Alive game.

First I'll show you a trailer that shows you the new game (Note: below trailer plays).

So I think this trailer basically shows the content of the game. I think it makes it more or less clear.

The motto for this game is "One more time, one more fight." The idea behind this phrase is people who haven't played a 3D fighting game for a while or are new to the genre. We would like to invite all of these people to come back to Dead or Alive.

This is Chronicle Mode. Basically, Chronicle Mode will teach you the history of Dead or Alive series. You'll learn everything about the games so far. There is also a tutorial that teaches you how to play, how to fight, and the techniques.

I mentioned earlier, on the big stage, the touch screen move-list. I'd like to show these controls in action. I'll be demonstrating using touch screen (Hayashi begins playing using the touch screen). Many of you have maybe played [the game] already, but I'll show you how it plays in action. The blue highlights the ones that I'm touching. And then depending on the situation, the options vary, so this is dynamic depending on the situation.

This is one situation

It's difficult to explain and play at the same time [Hayashi loses the fight].

You can scroll through the list of the techniques available, so please try out various techniques when you play this. I think when you try out this game with the touch screen controls it actually works better then you might expect. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

So that was the touch screen move-list, so now lets move onto the various communication modes. One mode is online play by Internet. Next is local play, which allows you to battle with friends in the same room. There's also Throw Down mode. This uses StreetPass. You'll receive challenges from other people, and you'll be able to fight them in this mode.

I think there really is a variety of possible experiences on Nintendo 3DS. I said earlier today that I strongly believe bringing this 3D fighting game to Nintendo 3DS is the first time [Dead or Alive] is truly 3D.

So this was actually my original plan for the presentation, but since you all came from such a long way I have a special announcement for you all in attendance. Please look at the video footage. (Note: Below Other M trailer plays)

*applause*

So as you may know, Team Ninja has been working with Nintendo on Other M (Note: Metroid: Other M was a collaboration between Nintendo and Team Ninja). As you can see Samus will come in and help you during the battle, so please try to find out how to get to Samus.

Thank you, and that was my presentation. *applause*

Moderator: Thank you Mr. Hayashi for that great presentation, really interesting, great surprise. We've now got some time for a few questions.

Question: I'd like to know which way of playing you personally recommend. Would you prefer the usual classic D-Pad method, or would you play with the touch pad?

Hayashi: The thing about touch screen move list is it very helpful for people who are new to the series. It allows them to be more successful in battles, but it will not allow them to win against experienced opponents.

The best way to use it is to start off with the touch screen move list to learn the game. But once you've progressed, and start using the buttons, the touch screen move list will make it easier for you to remember the button combinations.

Question: In your presentation, [you said] the cooperative play [lets you fight against] a computer and not a second player. Can you expand on this?

Hayashi: The idea behind this is if you had two friends, and one is really good and the other is just good; if these two are fighting this one will always win. This would be boring, especially for the one who is losing. With co-op mode these two could, as a team, fight a strong, computer-controlled character.

IGN Germany: I have question about the Chronicles Mode. How does this work? Is it one huge campaign or do you experience the smaller stories?

Hayashi: It is one big campaign, and I think it's going to last about five hours. It teaches you the whole story of Dead or Alive.

This looks painful

Nintendonation.de: There are rumors on the Internet about the frame rate, it is being said that the frame rate drops without the 3D mode. Is it true that the game runs at a frame rate of 60 FPS and without the 3D mode it runs at 30 FPS?

Hayashi: Actually it's the other way around. In 3D, the game runs at 30 [FPS], but the graphics are calculated at 60 [FPS]. So, we're actually dropping frames. So, while you're playing you're not losing a lot of movement, and the experience is not much different. When you completely turn of the 3D it runs at 60 [FPS].

Question: I have a question about the local multiplayer. Is it only multi-cart or is it also single cart?

Hayashi: It's only multi-cart, so both players will have to have the game. It does mean that all the characters are there.

Question: Does it take more resources to develop a stereoscopic game on 3DS, rather than a classic game, in terms of developers' time?

Hayashi: There's actually no big difference in the development costs. But I would say to have stereoscopic 3D you need to have some kind of know-how, you need to have good ideas for how to use it.

Question: Dead or Alive is known for being very open when showing the female characters. How does this use 3D with the stereoscopic [screen]? Is it more bouncy? *laughter* Is it like Dead or Alive Extreme? *laughter*

Kasumi

Hayashi: I think it's true for movies. I think when movies went 3D it was the same situation. It's really nice to watch female characters in 3D. *laughter* I think the same is true for this console the 3DS; it gives a different kind of reality to them. Depending on what the audience, what the consumers, demand we will also develop other items. *laughter*

I know this is a question you had in the back of your mind. We are using the motion controls and gyro-sensor for this. *laughter*

Moderator: Do we have time for one more question?

Hayashi: Yes.

Question: I wondered if there was any more information about StreetPass functionality. What are the consequences in terms of gameplay in game, how does it work exactly?

Hayashi: I mentioned this avatar earlier. When you're playing the game it actually creates an avatar for you that matches your characteristics. It bases it on the way you fight and the techniques you use a lot. This avatar is shared via StreetPass, so as you walk down the street you'll receive avatars from other people with their characteristics. From them you receive challenges, in which you battle these avatars. If you win you are able to unlock additional content in the game.

Moderator: Mr. Hayashi, thank you very much. We're sorry we kept you waiting (Note: The Capcom roundtable before this ran over time). *applause*

So what happens if I never meet someone who has the game? Will we still be able to unlock that content? That is what I am wondering.
