FINAL AS OF TUESDAY NIGHT

Jonathan Ross

Welcome everyone! Thank you. Thank you. Willkommen… Bienvenue… or, as they say in Amsterdam, Goede middag.

It's great to see you all here today I know some of you have come a very long way and hello as well to all of you watching online around the world.

As a gaming fan myself, I was really pleased to get the call from Nintendo to come here today to talk to you about the first ever gaming console that delivers 3D as we experience it in real life without the need for special glasses.

Today we're here to show you something unique, ladies and gentleman.

The Nintendo 3DS.

And the good news is that before the day is out those of you here in Amsterdam today will have the chance to experience it for yourself.

But in the meantime, we had to work out how we're going to explain the full 3D effect of the Nintendo 3DS  - without you actually holding one in your hands.

It was a tough ask, but after a couple of hours of painstaking research I came up with a simple solution… pass the buck to someone else.

So here to explain more about the Nintendo 3DS, please welcome Nintendo of Europe's Managing Director of Marketing and PR, Laurent Fischer.

Laurent Fischer

Good afternoon everyone ! As you may remember, over a decade ago, we experimented with 3D… in fact we even considered incorporating it into GameCube, but the technology to enable people to view 3D just wasn't available yet.

Now, as technology has improved,  and as we kept challenging ourselves to find ways to use it on our systems, we can benefit from the fact that, as far as 3D experiences are concerned, portable game machines have a massive advantage over home console as they come with their own screens.

We have developed a portable entertainment device that enables you to view full 3D in the palm of your hand.

And there is much more to the Nintendo 3DS than bringing 3D gaming to the masses. Let's take a look.

Laurent Fischer

We reinvented gaming with the original touchscreen Nintendo DS, and then again with the Wii's motion controller. Now, the Nintendo 3DS is set to change gaming again.

The most obvious change is, of course, the large 3D display screen on top.

Jonathan Ross

It looks bigger than the one I have on my Nintendo DSi?

Laurent Fischer

That's right. That top screen is about ten percent larger than the one on your Nintendo DSi… but it's what you experience on this screen that's truly unique -

The 3D effect is fully adjustable: If you look just to the right of the screen you can see the 3D depth slider. This enables you to adjust the 3D to suit you.

Jonathan Ross

Can I play my old Nintendo DS games on it?

Laurent Fischer

You bet. Nintendo 3DS will accept not only your Nintendo 3DS games but also almost all your favourite Nintendo DS and DSi titles.

There's also an SD memory card slot.  A 2-gig card comes with the system, and of course, you can upgrade from there by purchasing larger size SD cards.

Jonathan Ross

Are the controls the same?

Laurent Fischer

The basic controls are the same, - the A, B, X and Y buttons on the right… and the left and right shoulder buttons.

On the other side, you'll also recognize the D pad.

But here's a new addition and an important one - that analog circle pad just above the D pad. Developers are going to love using this for precise movement of characters… or the camera… or put it to other inventive uses, which I will come onto.

What you can't see, however, are the two elements at work inside the Nintendo 3DS. A built-in motion sensor and gyro sensor can react to the motion and tilt of the system,

Jonathan Ross

That sounds great… but what does it actually mean?

Laurent Fischer

Whether players are twisting their systems side to side or moving them up and down, their motion-compatible Nintendo 3DS games respond instantly.

No other system includes so many tools for game developers to create new and fun experiences for players.

Next, I'd like to point out something small that means a lot.

You see that light on the upper right of the console. It will signal a new level of automatic connectivity that will take handheld gaming onto another level, but more of that later.

Jonathan Ross

That's becoming something of a catchphrase for you…

One thing I have to ask, is it true it has a 3D camera?

Laurent Fischer

It's actually got three cameras as you may have noticed in the movie.

The first is just above the screen allowing you to photograph your own image as you use the console

Laurent Fischer

On the outside, there are also two separate cameras. These two cameras will allow developers to explore new forms of game design… And on top of this , with Nintendo 3DS you can take and view your own 3D photos, and share them with friends.

Jonathan Ross

What else?

Laurent Fischer

Apart from being able to watch and play in 3D without glasses,  another interesting aspect of the Nintendo 3DS is  Spot pass

Jonathan Ross

 What's that?

Laurent Fischer

SpotPass will revolutionise the way you receive content whilst on the move.

When you enter a compatible Wi-Fi area, the notification LED on your Nintendo 3DS i was speaking about earlier, will illuminate, showing you that it has received content such as downloadable games and add on content.

System updates after the hardware launch will add contents to be received by Nintendo 3DS such as 3D video.

To make it work, we are in contact with a number of potential Wi-Fi HotSpot partners across Europe, including Guglielmo and Linkem in Italy, tmn in portugal, KPN here in the Netherlands, Telekom in Germany, Meteor in France and BT Fon in the UK.

Jonathan Ross

So, your console will connect Without you having to lift a finger?

Laurent Fischer

That's right, this happens even when you are not aware of it, no matter what game is currently installed in your game slot.  Even during the system's sleep mode your Nintendo 3DS can access the internet and receive a wide variety of content.

Jonathan Ross

Can I also receive this content through my Wi-Fi at home?

Laurent Fischer

Yes, you can, once you have set it up on your Nintendo 3DS.

Jonathan Ross

What kind of content are we talking about here?

Laurent Fischer

Well, we've already lined up some very interesting partners.

We are pleased to announce today that we have partnered with Eurosport, to bring engaging 3D sports videos to the Nintendo 3DS via Spot Pass.

Sport video has the power to appeal to everyone. Eurosport, as a pioneering media group with extensive sports content and 3D expertise, is the perfect pan-European partner to provide users with compelling 3D content thru Nintendo 3DS.

We are also in discussion with partners at a country level, In the UK for instance we are working with British Sky Broadcasting to provide short form content from Sky 3D to Nintendo 3DS. We look forward to revealing more about this partnership in the coming months

But this is just the beginning. We are in discussions with many more potential partners.  Our aim is to deliver regular engaging and entertaining content to all Nintendo 3DS owners via Spot Pass

Jonathan Ross

And I believe we just so happen to have a representative from one of these partners with us today?

Laurent Fischer

That's right.

Jonathan Ross

My kids are going to be pretty jealous that I got to meet our next special guest. Not only is he co-founder of the legendary  Aardman Animations - the world famous film company behind the Wallace and Gromit series, Chicken Run and Flushed Away - but on a personal note, he also created Morph, one of my favourite animation characters of all time. Please welcome onto the stage David Sproxton.

LAURENT SIT DOWN

David Sproxton

Thank you Jonathan ,

I must say I'm very pleased to be invited here today, to talk to you all about Aardman's involvement with Nintendo, and the new Nintendo 3DS

Aardman has been in business for over 30 years now, and so much of our succes is to do with our belief that, at the heart of a great business there are great ideas, driven by great people.

We are fortunate that, over the decades, we've developed and attracted some fantastic talent...

..Talent which has helped us achieve the great many successes we've had,

in television, feature films, and commercials...

.. and the newly developed digital platforms of on-line games, web-sites, social networks and multi-platform projects.

But there's more to it than just talent and ideas.

You need partners in this business,... partners who can bring finance, ....

or access to the global market,

or great story telling skills,....

 or ground breaking technology.

And I'm pleased to say we've worked with some of the best business partners in the world:

Premier television broadcasters,

Hollywood feature film studios,

and some of the world's leading technology companies .

and now Nintendo, who are, of course, world leaders in the games industry.

Aardman also prides itself on being in the vanguard of new developments, both technical and creative....

For example, over ten years ago Aardman was one of the very first companies to launch an animated series on the world using the internet, in partnership with Atom Films.

Angry Kid found his audience through the internet, with over 60 million downloads, long before he found his niche on television...

Pioneering might be too strong a word, but innovation is very much in our DNA.

And this partnership, with Nintendo, is very much about innovation, moving things forward, and creating new markets.

And today, with over 600 people on the payroll, Aardman is firing on all cylinders, with our productions reaching huge audiences, worldwide.

In fact, it is this global success, and Aardman's ability to create compelling content on many platforms, that has led to this very exciting partnership with Nintendo.

Last year we worked with Nintendo to help promote the Flipnote Studio on the DSi. :

One of our animators created 12 short films on the Nintendo DSi using the software...

and we realised that here was another partner that had the same philosophy as we did :

to create excellent entertainment, in innovative ways, to reach global audiences.

So, today, it gives me great pleasure to be able to announce that Aardman and Nintendo are once again working together, to bring some very exciting developments to the public.

Aardman is going to provide specially created content, featuring the world famous, award winning Shaun the Sheep, exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS, in full blown 3D .

We will be producing a series of 1 minute shorts to exploit the amazing capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS.

These short films will be accessed via Spotpass and should be available from the end of the year.

Over the last few years, we at Aardman have established Shaun the Sheep as a major brand, with broad appeal in over 150 countries around the world,... from the USA to China.

We have numerous global partnerships, across many different activities, including TV, merchandise, publishing and more recently, live stage shows.

All this is supported by a huge Digital campaign, encompassing Shaun the Sheep's own on-line game, which to date has had 70 million plays, ...

... and, of course, we are supporting his 900,000 Facebook fans.

This broad audience and massive, global fan-base creates a very strong platform for this special partnership, and ensures the collaboration will be a great success.

We will be bringing Shaun the Sheep's unique form of physical comedy to his many, many fans not only in  glorious 3D...,

... but also to people on the move, using the extraordinary technology which is embedded in the Nintendo3DS.

It  really is an exciting project, and one which we think fans of both Shaun the Sheep and Nintendo will appreciate to the full.

We at Aardman can't wait to start working up some hilarious storylines....

And to remind you of why everyone around the world loves Shaun the Sheep, here are some clips from the latest TV series.

Jonathan Ross

Thanks David, that all sounds fantastic. I personally can't wait to have a mini 3D Shaun the Sheep in the palm of my hand.

David Sproxton everybody.

Jonathan Ross

Now, Laurent, in addition to SpotPass there's also something called StreetPass - it sounds like a train ticket… but I am sure its not?

Laurent Fischer

No - indeed. Basically, StreetPass is the name for enhanced local area connection between Nintendo 3DS systems. Lets have a look.

Laurent Fischer

Put simply with StreetPass your Nintendo 3DS automatically exchanges game information with other Nintendo 3DS systems that owners pass in the street - and you don't need to be playing with your Nintendo 3DS or even have the game inserted for this to happen.

As we have seen, if you put  Nintendo 3DS into the sleep mode and carry it around with you , when you pass by another Nintendo 3DS owner your Mii character will be exchanged with his or hers.

These Mii characters will gather in the Street Pass Mii Plaza in your Nintendo 3DS system, and you will find out which country or region the Mii came from and which was the last software he or she played with.

StreetPass also enables you to instantly exchange game play data …and even head-to-head battles-all without you having to do a thing.

But to be clear, no such transfers occur unless you want them to.

We've designed Nintendo 3DS to enhance the sense of community.  There's an important change in the way friends codes are implemented.  With Nintendo 3DS, there is only one code necessary, and you only need to register it once-the codes are not software-dependent.

And when friends are registered via local wireless, the registration is instantaneous without the need to exchange the code.,, and you'll never have to input a code to play with those same friends online.

You'll find out who's playing right now…what they're playing…and be able to join them much more easily than before.

  And community can happen automatically.

The StreetPass feature provides endless opportunities for game developers.  We at Nintendo have been having fun incorporating it into our games and applications.

And I can't wait to see what other game developers come up with.

Jonathan Ross

Right, well it's probably a good time to meet some of those developers, so for now Laurent, thank you and we'll see you later.

If you're anything like me you'll already know who Capcom are. One of the most renowned computer game companies, with a real heritage in arcade gaming, they're the people who created the phenomenally successful Street Fighter franchise.

They've been using the StreetPass technology in the forthcoming Super Street Fighter IV 3D.

Here to tell us a little more about it is Producer of Street Fighter, from Capcom, Mr Ono.

Jonathan Ross

Thank you Mr Ono

Next Ladies and gentleman I would now like to invite onto stage, the President of Nintendo of Europe, Mr Shibata,

Mr Shibata, great to have you here. I have to ask, what character do you play as in Street Fighter? Because I can really see you as a Chun-Li.

Mr Shibata

I think I'm more of a Ryu, or a Ken. And you, perhaps, could be Blanka?   The ugly green monster?

Jonathan Ross

Thanks, that's just how I want to be pictured.

What about you Mr Ono?

Now that’s a battle I’d like to see.  Virtually of course.

Thank you very much Mr Ono.

Jonathan Ross

So Mr Shibata, why is it so important to have companies like Capcom on board?

Mr Shibata

We are committed to working with third party developers /  to further expand the capabilities of Nintendo 3DS. The platform has been opened up for developers / to let their own talents create innovative new software..

The third party support we've received so far is very important to us.  The strength of the 3rd party line-up / demonstrates the serious commitment developers have made to the new console.

Nintendo 3DS is giving developers the chance to interact / with much-loved characters / in new ways, combining classic gameplay with new 3D and social elements.

Working with a wide range of developers,/ we want to make sure / Nintendo 3DS appeals to long-time gaming fans and newcomers / by offering a range of software to attract fans of all genres.

Jonathan Ross

So you've got everything from Nintendogs where you gently tickle a puppy to Street Fighter where you are kicking each other's heads off..

Mr Shibata

That's right./

We're delighted that developers are bringing some classic franchises to Nintendo 3DS,/ and look forward to some great new titles too.

Jonathan Ross

Well let's hear more from the people making the games. Our next guest is the CEO of a leading international developer, publisher and distributor of interactive entertainment products.

A true titan in the industry, ladies and gentlemen.

A behemoth.

A legend.

With the second largest in-house development staff in the world and 24 studios in 17 countries, please welcome President and CEO of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot.

Yves Guillemot

Hello everyone.

I am really happy to be here today because we've always been big fans of Nintendo at Ubisoft  and I am a HUGE fan of the Nintendo 3DS!

I remember when we first saw this machine. We were just amazed by the innovation and so impressed by the quality and accessibility of playing in 3D without glasses.

So we dove in and started to prototype. And we have now learned that the possibilities are endless. With this new technology, our creative teams were able to develop many new ideas.

So we have many games in development and Ubisoft is happy to offer players 8 titles in the launch period from brands like Rayman, Combat of Giants, Splinter Cell or Ghost Recon.

I hope you will enjoy. These experiences are more immersive than ever!

Thank you.

Jonathan Ross

I think I speak for everyone here when I say we can't wait to play them!

Ladies and gentleman a big thank you to Yves Guillemot and Mr. Shibata.

Jonathan Ross

I now have the honour of inviting on to the stage another legendary development team.

Konami has created many epic games over its long history, but none so successful as the Pro Evolution series - a personal favourite of mine.

It's with great excitement, then, that I can welcome the Executive of Pro Evolution Soccer, Mr. Enomoto, and the Producer of Pro Evolution Soccer, Mr. Hatsumi.

Mr. Enomoto

Hello everyone, my name is Enomoto from Konami.

Hello everyone, my name is Hatsumi also from Konami.

I remember I was so excited when I first heard the concept of Nintendo 3DS.

It opened my eyes to the many possibilities.

Now, only a limited number of people own 3D TV sets. However, due to Nintendo 3DS, I think many people will be able to experience 3D, even without the need of glasses.

I would like to reinvent Konami’s favourite franchises to 3D and create brand new ones so that many game fans could experience this new surprise.

Konami has launched Nintendo 3DS project and we chose PES for the first title for Nintendo 3DS.  The game uses the familiar theme of ‘football’ and this series has been supported by many fans in Europe.

We selected PES as the first title as we wanted many people to feel this new experience of Nintendo 3DS through PES 2011 3D.

In PES 2011 3D, the view during the match drastically evolved. In the past, gamers may have felt that they were watching football matches on TV. However, 3D enabled us to express depth and improve the realism, so gamers can feel as if they are watching matches from the stadium.

i

From the player’s view, it feels like they’re really playing on a football pitch. Gamers can play the game passionately like real football players, ripping the defence apart by dribbling and using through pass to score amazing goals.

As the first 3D football game, we really hope it will be enjoyed by many football fans in Europe.

Thank you very much.

Jonathan Ross

Thank you Mr Enomoto and Mr Hatsumi.

Jonathan Ross

I can't wait - it's going to be like playing in my local league except that I might actually be on the winning side for once.

But enough about me, it is with great excitement - and a little fear - that I'm able to introduce our next guest.

Though it sounds like a shadowy organisation who travel the world silently killing people as they sleep, I'm reliably informed that Tecmo Koei's Team Ninja is actually a Japanese video game development studio which was founded in 1995.

They've created some fantastic games… You might know them for their Dead or Alive series. With games like that, we're excited to hear about what they have planned for Nintendo 3DS.

Please join me in welcoming Head of Team Ninja and Producer of Dead or Alive Dimensions, Mr. Hayashi.

Since 1996, the DEAD OR ALIVE series had been developed on various hardware, but for the past 5 years we’ve been silent.

During this time we felt there was a great opportunity for a fighting game on a handheld console and we’ve been carefully planning one for some time.

However, due to the absence of a suitable console, these plans didn’t become reality so far.

Our ideas became reality when we were introduced to Nintendo 3DS.

We firmly believe that Nintendo 3DS is the right console for the first Dead or Alive handheld version as well as the resurgence of the Dead or Alive series.

Dead or Alive Dimensions contains highlights from the entire Dead or Alive history, so it’s the best version ever. It’s not simply a case of the 3D stages and fascinating characters that are the traits of this series coming back more beautifully than 5 years ago, but because of 3D, it has come back with attitude.

You should be able to feel the flowing, smooth beautiful movement of the images.

But that’s not all…

Even newcomers to the series can easily show off stunning combo attacks using just the touch screen…. and using Nintendo 3DS’s communication features, you can of course play online and have local wireless Co-Op battles, as well as a mode for StreetPass. Using these Nintendo 3DS features, we believe you can experience a new way of playing 3D fighting games.

Thanks to Nintendo 3DS, you can now experience the true 3D of 3D fighting games through Dead or Alive. I hope you are able to take the opportunity to experience it today and see for yourself with your own eyes.

Jonathan Ross

Thank you Mr Hayashi -

Jonathan Ross

And a big thank you to all the developers. Please join me in thanking them one more time.

I for one am really looking forward to getting my hands on those games, and I'm sure you are too.

Before we let you loose on them, let's find out more about some of the Nintendo titles that will be on show here today. Please welcome Laurent Fischer back onto stage .

Laurent Fischer

Thank you Jonathan.

So let's start with both a name… and a game environment… that some of you are already familiar with. Pilotwings Resort will have you soaring over the same Wuhu Island that you know from Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort. But what makes all of this new is going airborne in full 3D.

You've got the choice of just floating over the island, casually seeing the sights… or competing to hit targets using your hang glider, rocket belt or airplane.

Next, Jonathan, you'll be glad to hear the much loved nintendogs is back for the Nintendo 3DS it's more real than ever.

The original, of course, left some cat lovers feeling a little left out… but now that's solved with our new title nintendogs + cats. Just like real life, the puppies will beg for attention and affection… while you're going to have to work a little harder to earn some love from your kitty.

What's really noticeable here is the impact of that display screen… and its underlying technology. In the original Nintendo DS game, two versions of the same breed of dog would differ only slightly in coloration - your golden lab looked pretty much like mine.

Now, with Nintendo 3DS, not only does the fur look absolutely petable… but we've built in a wide variability in body size, body shape and leg length etc. And the puppies and kittens can remember your face...  If you put your face closer, they may lap you. But if he's never seen you before , the first time you call him over, he may get scared and bark.

Some of you might remember a tech demo we showed when the Nintendo DS was first coming on the scene. You used the Nintendo DS touch screen to manoeuvre a submarine through reefs and shoals… and to fire off torpedoes.

It's finally preparing to surface as a Nintendo 3DS title called Steel Diver , and it looks even better in 3D.  Beyond what you've seen before, we've got an entirely new game play level for you today.

You'll be looking through a periscope at a sea of enemy ships - but you won't need the circle pad to aim.  Using the system's built-in gyroscope, you'll rotate your body to turn the periscope and target.

Another favourite, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, is back and totally remastered with 3D visuals and improved graphics - as is Kid Icarus in Kid Icarus Uprising, which a brand new and completely different  title from the franchise Nintendo originally introduced in the days  of NES.  Make sure you try this to understand what targeting and shooting is like in a true 3D environment.

Jonathan Ross

I tell you, times have changed. When I was kid, we had to make do with throwing stones at each other. That was our '3D shooting environment'.

So, Laurent, please… when can we actually get our hands on it??

Laurent Fischer

Wait, first of all let me show you what makes Nintendo 3DS even more special.  That is the software that is pre-loaded on the system.  Let's take a look.

Jonathan Ross

Wow, I'm looking forward to checking those out.

So Mr. Shibata tell us a bit more about what we've just seen.

Mr. Shibata

First, the Mii Maker-similar to the one you already recognize from Wii.  But instead of just starting the process from scratch, here you can also use the camera to take your own photo and the hardware will automatically create your preliminary Mii..and you can make your own adjustments from there.  Making Mii has become even more easier.

Jonathan Ross

Not to mention more fun. I tried making my own Mii earlier- can we show it on screen? There I am, not a bad looking chap eh?

Mr Shibata

Very handsome. Would you like to see my Mii?

Jonathan Ross

I don't know, no man's ever asked me that before…

Jonathan Ross

Whahey - there you are. I think I'd recognise you if we met in cyberspace.

Mr Shibata

And those Miis won't just appear in games…they'll also be among the content automatically swapped via Street Pass functionality.

Jonathan Ross

So now that we're the best of virtual friends, we can play Face Raiders, right?

Mr Shibata

Yes, now this is a new game that comes pre-installed on the Nintendo 3DS, you play by taking your own picture and inserting it into a shooting gallery, of sorts.

Jonathan Ross

The British tabloids do that all time with my face!

So you can shoot yourself in the face.

Was that AR Cards I saw there on the video?

Mr Shibata

Yes, you'll have a chance to play that later on today and see what the Nintendo 3DS can get out of a single card

It won't come preinstalled on the hardware,, you will be able to enjoy an enhanced Internet browser and the Nintendo eShop with a simple system update at a later stage.

Jonathan Ross

So what will I be able to buy in the Nintendo eShop?

Mr Shibata

Nintendo 3DS owners will find it easier than ever to get access to digital game downloads.. With the Nintendo eShop, a stead progression of Game Boy and Game Boy Color games will become available on the Virtual Console, in addition to the new downloadable software titles. //

OK, so just before we finish by confirming our launch plans for  Europe, let's take a look at what will be on offer.

Mr Shibata

In terms of genre and selection, there will truly be something for everyone. Sports… action… shooter… fighter… family… racing… RPG - all available on or very soon after launch day.

And now to the question I know you are all very keen to hear answered - when can you get your hands on your own Nintendo 3DS.

Jonathan Ross

That's the only reason I'm here, to be perfectly honest.

Mr. Shibata

Last year we announced that we were aiming for a worldwide launch by the end of our fiscal year which is March 31st.

I'm now happy to announce we'll honour this promise and will be launching Nintendo 3DS across Europe on 25th March.

As always Retailer price of our hardware is decided by the retailers. Our trade price has been delivered to customers, so please refer to their prices".

I can also confirm that during the launch window, which we are defining as between launch and early June, more than 25 games will be available to Nintendo 3DS owners.

Jonathan Ross

Well that' s certainly going to keep me busy.

Mr Shibata

For all you watching online - I'm sorry that you aren't able to experience Nintendo 3DS for yourself today , but rest assured we will be embarking on our most extensive sampling campaign in Europe starting in February and we hope we will be able to show Nintendo 3DS to as many people as possible before it launches..

Further details will be published soon on, Nintendos website

Thank you all for your interest today. I hope we've been able to convey today that this isn't just the launch of another game device… but the start of a new entertainment era.

Jonathan Ross

So you have now heard all about what the Nintendo 3DS has to offer, for those of you watching online we’re saying goodbye, for those of you here we’re saying follow us and come and experience Nintendo 3DS for yourselves.  Thank you.
