Okami 2 to be Revealed By Famitsu?

Given the root of the word it's speculated that the title is a sequel to the critically acclaimed Wii/PS2 title, Okami.

Today, Andria Sang confirmed that the title will be appearing in the next issue of Famitsu, thanks to a listing on a 7-11 website (really). Of course, this is not an official confirmation that the title is associated in any way with the original; however, the issue will be hitting store shelves on September 3, revealing the truth.

Back in May, Famitsu conducted a reader poll asking them which titles they'd most like to see a sequel to. Okami placed third in the poll, indicating definite interest from Japanese gamers in the title.

Hopefully, this will culminate in an official announcement of the title worldwide as an official Okami sequel.

Talkback

Nice! Count me in the "interested" category.

GoldenPhoenixAugust 27, 2009

Okami despite its somewhat lackluster sales on Wii seems to be a good fit for Wii, especially when it comes to a brand new sequel where, you know, marketing can be put behind it.

PlugabugzAugust 27, 2009

Count me, and likely ProDaisy, in the "if there's a unplayable blur filter thing, forget it" category.

I am looking forward to Sept. 3rd. This will be a big announcement for fans of the series!

I'm not going to lie, I saw some of this game, and I was a bit unimpressed.  The art style and direction was great, and the concepts shown are intriguing, to say the least, but so much of the actual gameplay seemed uninspired and archaic, in a bad way.  It could have been the person playing the game that gave that impression, though, but it seems like far too much time was spent running from place to place, as if the world was far too spread out, and nearly always took too long to move from point A to point B, talking to people took forever, and setting up specific circumstances was clumsy and annoying.

The good news?  All of those concerns could be addressed in a sequel, which could lead to a game with even better critical reception, and probably leave IGN with increasing frothing demand for it.

EnnerAugust 27, 2009

I wonder who is making the game if this turns out to be true. Is Platinum Games owned by Sega? If not, then it doesn't seem too far-fetched that Capcom would hire the people that left them.
It would a surprise if Capcom contracted a western developer to do the work. Well, a surprise due to the subject matter as Capcom recently has three titles it is pushing or has pushed made by non-Japanese developers.

Maybe they could even publish it if Platinum wanted to do a sequel.

Okami ~Slim~

Exclusive to PS3

Please let it be so, Capcom.

broodwarsAugust 27, 2009

Well this was unexpected.  I admire the art aspect of Okami, but I just do not like the first game.  I just found it incredibly boring and tedious, especially with the Wiimote-flailing for attacking and the finicky sensitivity for drawing shapes with the Celestial Brush.  It just felt to me like a game created from Zelda leftovers.  Hopefully the second game will be more interesting because the franchise has potential.

StogiAugust 27, 2009

For being Zelda fans, you guys suck. It's obvious you don't like gameplay but just like watching Link run around in tights. Gay.

Okami's great and I welcome a sequel.

YmeegodAugust 27, 2009

"but it seems like far too much time was spent running from place to place, as if the world was far too spread out, and nearly always took too long to move from point A to point B, talking to people took forever,

You can say the same about Zelda too.  It's not instant action but action/adventure meaning you're supposed to stop and look around.

I hope this is true, don't care what platform gets it as long as it comes.  Great news on a sad day--it sounds like Beyond Good and Evil might have been canned that's why no news at E3.

that Baby guyAugust 27, 2009

I do say the same about Zelda.  I'm not a big fan of many games in that franchise.  However, Zelda places authentic things for you to find just about every time you have to dash through an area.  Okami didn't do things quite the same way.

Really?  It seemed like I was stopping every few seconds to bloom a tree, feed an animal, dig up a clover or talk to somebody in Twilight Princess it seemed like you spent a lot of time running through open areas and seeing nothing worth stopping for, kinda of like Wind Waker islands take several minutes to travel between with very little in between, both were phenomenal games, but I felt Okami was a cut above

that Baby guyAugust 27, 2009

Again, I stated I also don't like many of the Zelda games out there.  The one I did enjoy most seemed filled to the brim with amazing detail and secrets in just about every area.  I'm sure this game matches the running through open areas of the Zelda games I don't like, then.

brian577August 27, 2009

What is this Zelda game you hold in such high regard?

that Baby guyAugust 27, 2009

I dunno, Link to the Past, maybe.  It seemed to be pretty good to me.

SteleAugust 27, 2009

Yeah I enjoyed Okami more than MM, WW, or TP.  So much of the same basic gameplay, hearts, ink (magic), collecting upgrades, heart pieces, etc.  But some variety in the 3 weapon types and primary/secondary alt functions.  Not to mention all the ink powers, some of which were very useful in battle.

And something different for the background legends and stories. Sure Link (courage) Zelda (wisdom) and Ganondorf (power) is interesting, but we have heard it before.  Amaterasu, Orochi, Yami, etc was all new to me.

It's like Okami took a whole bunch of good parts from Zelda, added some more unique ideas, wrapped it all into a new interesting story, put a fresh coat of paint (literally  ;) ) on it, and made a great game.

More please.  ;D

While not perfect, I thought Okami's controls on Wii were pretty good. So Pro, how are they broken?

Agreed, the brush just requires practice, as for the combat, the player just needs to realize that random swinging will not cut it.

StogiAugust 28, 2009

The controls were a breeze. I was hitting monsters, drawing techniques, and continuing a combo in mere seconds; not to mention the angling I did while in brush mode to maximize it's effectiveness.

If there's one thing I would change, it would be the dodging. I think there was maybe one battle where you had to use it and it sucked.

NinGurl69 *hugglesAugust 28, 2009

This wasn't swinging, this was IR pointy at a level beneath Red Steel.

It's like pool in Wii Play.

StratosAugust 28, 2009

I do want much. Okami > 3-D Zelda for me.

So basically Killer7 level in regards to control competency? That is way too much of a low blow, you should take that back.

broodwarsAugust 28, 2009

Hopefully Capcom will have released their control mistakes with the Wii port of Okami and will address them in this sequel.  The Celestial Brush shape recognition needs to be significantly tightened and for the love of all that is holy map attack to a button instead of shaking the remote!  Just about any button will do over having to use waggle!

StratosAugust 28, 2009

I didn't have much of an issue with the waggle. The controls were not broken, they were just finicky. You have to work with them a bit, though I'd say there is plenty of room for improvement. Trying to get proper brush strokes in certain directions was tricky sometimes.

The Celestial Brush worked fine.

However, I do agree with you that there needs to be less waggle.  Combat needs to be seriously improved in the sequel.  I used the Rosary Beads almost exclusively but fighting enemies with high HP meant I'd sometimes sit there shaking my remote for a solid 3 minutes per battle.

Dunno, I was always using swords as my primary with beads as secondary before I got the ability to get extra power from dual swords.

YmeegodAugust 29, 2009

Well it was just a port from the PS2 so yeah, the controls are a bit funky since it seemed like a rush port anyhow.

But if they make a sequel for the WII then they'll be able to fully embrace the controls and do a much better job.

I loved the odd-ball humor in the game most--Zelda WW had a few funny moments but that's about it and TP didn't even have that.

That carousel cannon thing was the weirdest, creepiest and one of the funniest things I've seen in quite awhile. TP had plenty of weird humor.

Not to mention the Bug Palace.

Flames_of_chaosLukasz Balicki, Staff AlumnusSeptember 01, 2009

Scans were released of Okamiden and it is a 3D DS game. They managed to recreate the cell shaded style of Okami on Wii/PS2.

If you want to take a peek at how it looks.

broodwarsSeptember 01, 2009

Damn the handheld dominance in Japan, with all these long-anticipated console sequels going to handhelds.  First Valkyria Chronicles 2 and now this...

(yes, I didn't think much of the first game, but I too was looking forward to a retooled sequel.)

that Baby guySeptember 01, 2009

I like big handheld games.  Devs have to work harder to make their game stand out, and don't use visuals as a crutch as often.

Nick DiMolaNick DiMola, Staff AlumnusSeptember 01, 2009

AWESOME. This better come to America.

The brush mechanics are sure to work flawlessly with stylus input. SO EXCITED.

That's an interesting thought. Maybe it will be a DSi exclusive game. That would sure make me buy a DSi. I agree that 3d games on DS look really bad, but at least the cel-shaded ones look alright. It's one of the big turn-offs I get from the FF remakes.

FFIV says you are wrong about 3D games looking bad on DS.

StratosSeptember 02, 2009

No, that actually proves my point. They are ugly. Especially when contrasted with the fancy-shmancy CGI cutscenes.

http://files.nintendic.com/nintendo-ds/final-fantasy-iv/ffiv-newart.jpg

Especially all that nasty pixelation in the in-game graphics. People are trying too hard to make realistic 3D graphics on the DS and I am not a big fan of them.

I like the concept of Nostalgia, but watching the trailer go from the anime cutscenes to the DS 3D graphics makes me cringe. Maybe I just think more games should be 2D on the DS.

GoldenPhoenixSeptember 02, 2009

Wrong, I'm sorry you can't blow up a DS screen like that, the game looks FANTASTIC on the standard size DS screen. So you are, once againb, WRONG.

StogiSeptember 02, 2009

That would be the worst move in history if Okami was released on the DSi. The game is already pretty obscure. Why neuter your potential market?

vuduSeptember 03, 2009

The best move in history would be if Okami was released as a DSi-exclusive title.  The regular DS isn't as powerful.  Why neuter your potential game?

StogiSeptember 03, 2009

For touting yourself as the "smart prick", what you said right now was pretty asinine.

NinGurl69 *hugglesSeptember 03, 2009

It looks better than the Wii version.

broodwarsSeptember 03, 2009

The regular DS was more than capable of handling cel sahading of this caliber.  Anyone remember that DS Viewtiful Joe game? C'mon, it wasn't that bad.

Although the technical geek within me says that it's high time the DSi started to show that it was a worthwhile gaming system with its own library, I have to agree with Kashogi: releasing a niche game like this on a system with a lower userbase than the original DS could be a big mistake.

Quote from: GoldenPhoenix

It doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look great either.  There, you both win!  Or lose, I dunno.

As someone who's played a fair amount of PSP, it's sometimes hard to go back and look at the "high quality" graphics on DS and feel good about it.  Most of the time, the gameplay makes up for it, so it's not that big of a deal, but it's not unnoticeable either.

IMO the best DS looking games are the ones that don't try to push realistic 3D graphics.  New SMB, for example, looks gorgeous.

Mop it upSeptember 04, 2009

3D on DS is pretty unimpressive, it generally looks like a low-quality PlayStation game. I was surprised at just how much more smooth Super Mario 64 looks on the Nintendo 64 over the DS. Mario Hoops is pretty blurry too.

DS looks better the PS if you have a developer that actually takes time and resources to develop the 3D. Compare FFIV to the pixelated crap known as FF7.
