Louie's Goodbye

by Louie the Cat - March 12, 2006, 6:16 pm EST

After seven years, the interweb's most famous feline says farewell.

A lot's changed since 1999 when Billy decided to dedicate himself to a little webpage called N2000HQ. Since then, Nintendo's released a home console, two handhelds, and many classic games. But through it all, the staff of Planet GameCube has pushed onward and continues to deliver quality content to this day. And once in a while, I like to chime in on a rumor (or "rumour" to you crazy Europeans).

I still remember the day when Billy's GBA arrived. He wouldn't let me play at first, so I had to give him those cutesy kitty eyes:

I was playing Super Mario Advance in no time.

Today the GBA seems to be fading out, what with the DS quickly dominating handheld sales, but let's never forget the seminal releases on the platform, like the trio of Castlevania titles, Metroid Fusion, and newer games like Drill Dozer. And hey, there's still Mother 3! That aside, though, I think it's time Nintendo devoted 100% of its handheld energy to the DS. Sure, the DS is beating the PSP over the head with a 2x4 at the moment, but you never know when the enemy's gonna pull a knife on ya! You can't be too safe. Especially with that Ken Kutaragi guy. He's scary.

And who could forget the arrival of the GameCube? I certainly remember it…

How Billy ever thought it belonged to him, I’ll never know…

The GameCube, though… It’s been through some tough times; post-launch droughts, spotty third-party support, and even some exclusive games that weren’t so “exclusive" after all. But, despite all of that, Nintendo’s made it a worthwhile system. With enticing games like Super Smash Bros. Melee, Wind Waker, and the Pikmin series, anyone who says the GameCube is a failure is lying through their teeth. And on top of that, Nintendo’s managed to stay more profitable than both Microsoft and Sony, despite their third-place sales position. Woot!

Honestly, though, the GameCube seems to only have one last hurrah. After Twilight Princess, it’s as good as dead. Luckily, by that time, the Revolution should be on its way out, and when that happens, it’s a whole different ballgame, baby! Sporting a brand new, creative control scheme, I have a feeling the Rev’ll be unlike anything we’ve ever seen from Nintendo.

And that’s what brings us to the topic at hand, folks. I’ve had a lot of fun here at PGC, gallivanting around, putting up rumors and the like, but it’s time that this old cat passed down the torch. As of this posting, I’m retiring from my role here at Planet GameCube as Rumor Editor and mascot. In my place, expect to see the regular human staffers contributing to the rumor section. I know they’ll never match t3h Louiez, but they’ll be trying their best to keep the ship steady for a brand new console generation.

Before I make my final farewell, there are a few people I’d like to thank. First off, there’s Billy Berghammer, PGC’s founder and all-around cool guy who was glad to let me crash in his man-crib for quite some time. And of course, who could forget Jonny Metts, who I’m sure will buckle under the pressure now that I’m gone. I don’t know how he’ll run the site without me, honestly…

Most of all, though, I’d like to thank you. PGC’s readers have been putting up with my cat-rants for seven years now and have been nothing less than extraordinary when it comes to positive feedback. Kitty Love to all y’all.

I’ll miss you, Planet GameCube. You’ve been good to me… EVEN THOUGH YOU’VE NEVER TAKEN ME TO E3, DAMN YOUS!

LIEZ! I wasn’t there you cheapskates!

But I digress… It really has been a magical experience and I’ll always look back on it fondly.

Once and for all, this is Louie the Cat, signing off.
