LostWinds

Game

by Neal Ronaghan - May 12, 2010, 1:00 pm EDT

This week's Extra Life is focused on LostWinds, just in time for its two-year anniversary.

Note: The following is all written in streams of consciousness during my time with the game.

At first glance, this looks really pretty, and the main character, Toku, is adorable as he climbs up ledges. I like how the pointer has weight on screen e.g. you move it around and the world around reacts to it like it is wind.

Now there's a wind spirit, and he's going to tell me a story. The story presentation reminds me of the opening of Wind Waker, oddly enough.

Now I have the power of gust, so I can point and drag gusts of wind to boost Toku's jumps. It's cool and works well, but it's annoying when almost every jump is followed by the grunting whine of Toku climbing up the ledge.

The power of gust!

I keep eating fruit, but I don't understand the point of doing so. I assume health regeneration, but I'm not sure.

I uncovered a shrine that boosts the wind spirit's powers. There might be a Metroid-like progression to this game.

Now there are enemies that can be blown away by gust. I might just have Pokemon on the mind, but gust makes me think of Pidgeys. It looks like using the wind to move things in a certain direction is going to be the go-to puzzle in this game.

Pidgey also uses the power of gust

Oh damn, the village is under attack! Oh wait, I think it's just an earthquake.

I'm wandering through the village. Blew wind past an old man. He made the "best noise ever" according to Lauren (Lewandoski, NWR Contributing Writer).

I talked to a villager who could hear the wind spirit. He sent me off to Wither Falls, which the game details as "to the west." Cut the crap, game. It's to the left.

Yes, I must do.

On the path to this new area, I have to go through some frustrating platforming bits. This wind mechanic is neat, but it can get very frustrating as there is a degree of imprecision. Dealing with enemies also kind of sucks for the same reasons.

This game still looks beautiful. Lauren just said the music started off like Harvest Moon, and is now sounding like Titanic.

I just got the power of Slipstream, which will now allow me to use the elements of water and fire more. I'm also closing in on an hour of playtime with LostWinds, so it's time for this playtime to end.

Played for about 45 minutes, traveled to two shrines, and made many villagers make goofy noises because of the wind.
