Quake 3 Arena

by Billy Berghammer - September 9, 1999, 4:16 am EDT

Billy rants on what he'd like to see in a "Dolphin" version of the online multiplayer hit.

Unless you have been rapped under a rock for the past few years, you've probably heard or played id Software's first person shooter Quake. Quake 3 differs from it'ss predecessors by focusing around the deathmatch. The Quake series has experienced extreme amounts of success on the PC and Mac mainly because of it's network/online capabilities. On consoles, Quake has been rather mediocre. With the possibilities of Nintendo's next generation console have some sort of network/internet capabilities, a Quake 3 port for the Dolphin would be a great way for console players to finally get a taste of what PC/Mac Quake players have been bragging about for so many years.

    Basic Features:

  • Online gameplay

  • Single player mode where you could fight against bots (computer controlled opponents)

  • 2/4 player split-screen deathmatches

  • Online world wide ranking system

    Extra Goodies:

  • Hidden levels that could be unlocked

  • Create a character, similar to Perfect Dark, where you could paste your face onto your players, by using a Gameboy camera.

  • Included multiplayer levels, as well as different popular Quake modifications like Capture the Flag, Rocket Arena, Team Play, and Jailbreak. Even the possibility of downloading additional modification or custom made levels would keep players coming back for more.

Billy says: If you couldn't tell, I am a huge fan of Quake on the PC. As I write this Quake 3 hasn't even been officially released yet. I have been playing the demo for quite a while, and I think the game would be an absolute blast on the consoles. I realize this game is a reality for the PC, but it hasn't been made a reality for the Dolphin. Maybe it will be on the Dreamcast, but I think that with the Dolphin's raw power and possible network connections, it would be absolutely incredible.

First person shooters on consoles, in my opinion, have been rather weak compared to their PC counterparts. There have been many of these games made for the N64, and only one of them really impressed me, and that was Goldeneye. Goldeneye was a shinning moment in console deathmatching, but I think it fully pales in comparison to the fun I have been having with Quake on the net.

The Dolphin should have more than enough power to handle all that Quake 3 needs. These next 2 concepts alone make Quake 3 on the next Nintendo console give me chills: 1.Having my dolphin be able to connect to the net and play a 32 player deathmatch game. 2. Have my Dolphin call a buddy's house and play Quake 3 against him. It's about time console gamers experienced what PC gamers have been loving for years.

Shawn says: It's cool to think about Mac/PC games being ported over to the Dolphin. Since I own a Macintosh G3, it would be nice if my Dolphin could supply me with all the games I usually miss. Blade Runner, Half-Life, how I love thee all.

Kosta says: Quake 3 would be a great game to show off the Dolphin's networking capabilities. How many times have you discussed the awesome multiplayer battles in Goldeneye amongst a group of friends and then someone mentions Quake on PC? This proves that console deathmatches have never reached the status that PC deathmatches have received today. Quake 3 for Dolphin would provide gamers who have never experienced networked deathmatches or even those who have, a great, easily accessible, not to mention very pretty (in graphical terms that is), and extremely fun multiplayer experience.

Mike R. says: This has never been tried on a possibly 256-bit system (Editor's note: hahaha),with a cool state of the art music generator. Imagine the Dolphin with Quake 3 though. The graphics would kick ass and the game boy camera hookup is a excellent idea. The sound on it will be awesome too. I vote for this one.
