A Flirtatious Figurine

Andrew shows his Shantae support with some 3D fan art.

Normally I'm not one to blatantly plug my artwork here beyond the occasional Powered Off comic or article drawing, but considering the Kickstarter for Shantae Half-Genie Hero has only thirty hours left, I want to spread the word as much as possible. I grew up with oldschool Castlevania titles and progressed into hardcore gamer around the time of the original Wario Land, and after reading about Zach gushing over Shantae as both a character and a game I had to play it. It was love at first sight, and while I may may still regard series like Mario, Zelda and Metroid among my favorites, Shantae is by far my favorite game character hands-down. Smart, funny, sexy, heroic and adorable, she is all of these things and more; what's not to like about her?

So now that she's here, dancing through the danger to bring us an all new game and plead for our support, what better chance to show her some love. My 3D modeling skills were getting pretty rusty and I dusted off my old software to make this:

Now updated, thanks to feedback from reader Ceric!

Shiny, ain't she? I designed this to look like one of those little bonus figurines that come with game pre-orders, or perhaps those gashapon toys you get in capsule machines in Japan. Maybe I should have made a render of the model without the glossy paint look and stuck her on a Smash Bros. trophy stand to anonymously distribute on some small forums, much like a certain purple prank I once pulled...

I can almost picture her in a 3D-rendered platformer.

And just cause I can, a rotating view.

Anyway, that's my little last-minute promotion push. This isn't my last piece of Shantae art, the next one is going to be much more detailed!

You can read about Shantae's series and the Kickstarter campaign in the feature I wrote a few days ago, but due to the nature of the feature, I had to force myself to be unbiased and impartial. Here I can let loose with unbridled opinion: go pledge on the game! Do it now!

She has no teeth.

Its not really the lack of teeth, which is not totally uncommon, its how her mouth curves in like she has not teeth.

I wasn't looking at her mouth.

I've been working hard to not objectify women.  To look beyond and think about other things.  Its really hard because just looking at someone all you know about them is what they look like and what you can infer from that.

Well, to each his own. To me, objectifying women is pretty much a full-time job.

not bad at all! it's a bit basic and plastic-y, but honestly it's leagues better than anything I can do with 3D Modeling!

Thank you, that's the most helpful feedback I've had while making the model!
I knew there was something bugging me about the mouth but I couldn't place my finger on it. I've tweaked and moved the lip vertices. I also made her bracelets thinner and adjusted her pants trim to more closely match the source material, and added painted-on eye shine textures. I also made her collar larger and thinner. You can now compare the versions with the pics in the blog post above.

That looks better.  Though her nose is blending into her face from the front view a little.

It looks, from the side for, that it loops up to a hook and then just goes straight to the lips.  You may want to try curving it to the lips. (I have nothing to draw with.)  Though that is probably a limitation of being a figurine.

Do you think her arms are going to structurally be strong enough to support her wrists and hands if made into a figure at the Capsule scale?

Yeah. Being a 3D model makes it hard to show the nose jutting out as almost no direct lighting will cast shadow on it, unless I angle the light to one side and risk the reflectivity of the paint surface making it look like she has a 5 o'clock shadow. I could also extrude the nose out a little more or make it more bulbous, but that won't match the source pictures.

As for the arms, it depends on the material used. If it's a lightweight, bendable resin of the same kind as the Furuta Mario capsule toys, probably. The figure certainly wouldn't be more than a few inches tall at most, if I was aiming for a larger scale I would have designed it to look more realistic like in the original game or Risky's Revenge artwork, or the splash screen for the Kickstarter video trailer (where she has slightly different proportions, eyebrows, eye color, etc).
