Opera releases details on its browser for Nintendo’s Wii console

Oslo, Norway - September 26, 2006 - Opera Software today announced details on its browser for Nintendo’s soon-to-be released game console, Wii. Opera’s full Web browser is available for download from the "Wii Shop Channel". Nintendo has stated that they will offer Opera free of charge as a temporary promotion for all Wii users until June 2007.

Toys "R" Us has added Wii to its list of hot toys for the 2006 holiday season. Wii will be the first video game console to make the annual list. Besides the obvious criterion of appealing to a younger audience, Wii will also meet the criterion of being available in sufficient quantities, something that newly launching consoles generally fail to do.

Nintendo's Canadian brass says North America is getting a seven-figure shipment on November 19.

The Mackenzie Financial Corporation is a typical investment firm located north of the border. The company posted a news story about the (Canadian) Wii launch at the same time the official Canada launch details press release hit the wire. They even had quotes from Nintendo Canada's VP and GM, Ron Bertram--the same Rom Bertram quoted in the Nintendo PR. What's the big deal, then?

Wii Region-Free Wii

Wii titles are most likely to be playable on consoles worldwide, Nintendo's own included.

Games writer, friend to PGC and heavy drinker Chris Kohler is reporting on his Wired Games Blog that the Wii console, like the Nintendo DS, will be able to play games from any region of the world.

The report implies that region protection can still be put in place by publishers if they so desire, but Nintendo's own games won't be locked to a specific country.

The news on US price, date, and more has already hit the papers.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer has already posted details from The New York Times regarding the Wii announcement to be made later today.

Wii is set to launch in North and South America on November 19th, at a price of $250. By year end, twenty-five to thirty games are slated to be released, and Nintendo plans to ship 4 million consoles worldwide.
