Excuse me, what?

The original Switch is getting one more ride.

Nintendo has announced a Switch 1-specific Nintendo Direct will air tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET / 7 a.m. PT / 1500 CET. The show will run for about 30 minutes.

No Switch 2 information will be in the show due to the Switch 2-specific Direct airing a week from today.

Oh shit, the rumors were actually true this time.  Well, this will probably be the last time we see anything major that will come out for the Switch 1 from Nintendo so it'll be interesting to see what they show.  Yeah I'm sure we'll get remasters for years to come, but anything that's either fully new like Prime 4, or full blown remakes like that rumored Fire Emblem 4 remakes that's been going around for years, this will be the last time to show them.

Oh, never change, Nintendo. Never change.

Double the switches means double the directs!

I was not expecting the rumours to be true as it seems so odd to have two directs so close together.  Why not just combine them or have done the Switch 1 direct a month ago?  If they had combined them they could easily have said "we also have some new games for the original Switch which will also be playable on the Switch 2" and then ended the event with that.

I expect we'll get proper release dates for Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon Legends: Z-A.  For new stuff I'm thinking that remakes seem the most likely since they can make those fairly quickly and it would be seem odd to do something brand new and not make it a Switch 2 exclusive.  If it's something outright new then maybe it would be an eShop only title or something that can be thrown together reasonably soon like a Mario Party or something that re-uses assets.  Maybe localizing a third party title that's already done but hasn't been released here yet, like Dragon Quest X Offline.

Now are third parties going to be included in the Direct?  I can see some multi-platform games being shown where the Switch is just one of many platforms included and maybe a Switch 2 version shows up later on (or maybe gets revealed in a week).

This makes me think the Switch 2 won't release until the Fall.

I hope that Silksong game finally shows up just so the internet in general can shut the **** up about it.

Realistically, I'm hoping for Switch ports of the remaining worthwhile Wii U games that haven't already made it over, but this is probably going to mainly be an Indie/3rd party shovelware showcase (including that demo that's been rumored for the latest wannabe-Danganronpa game from the Danganronpa devs). All the big announcements are going to be held for the real Direct in a few months when Switch 2 can finally be discussed.

Yeah, the guess of a possible June / July release for Switch now feels too soon if they want to talk about a few more Switch 1 games. Of course, with Switch 2 being backwards compatible, perhaps Nintendo is ok with a few old ports releasing later in the summer and fall for those that can't get a new system right away as something to tide them over while Switch 2 grows its userbase. It's the Just Dance dilemma. Do you keep releasing software on an older system even when its replacement is out? That old system has a big userbase and if it is still purchasing games then wouldn't it be smart to keep supporting it until sales show its better to stop and move on.

This is Nintendo's PS4/PS5 test. Look at how developers keep releasing PS4 version games along with PS5 versions because that userbase keeps buying games for the system and has been slow to upgrade to PS5s. As a result, the PS5 has had a hard time with gaining an identity this gen and it has resulted in first party games getting ported to other systems to generate more sales since the PS5 userbase alone isn't enough anymore due to the cost. Nintendo should be looking to avoid that and make sure Switch 1 isn't hurting Switch 2's growth potential.

Nintendo tried keeping the 3DS going for a year after the Switch released. This may be that same strategy of giving the Switch a few more titles to give it a gentle ride into the sunset instead of immediately turning off the tap of software releases for the system like Wii U. However, if Nintendo is still making software for Switch 1 next year then I will be surprised and feel like that means Switch 2's growth hasn't been as strong as hoped.

Months or next week on Apr. 2? I suppose it depends on the Switch 2 release date. If it is summer then there should be a lot of software and launch titles releases talked about. If later in fall time then they may hold back on software releases for a Direct during the ghost of E3 in summertime.

Yeah, for some reason, I thought the Switch 2 Direct was in May. Really weird that they wanted to force out a Switch 1 Direct the week before their Switch 2 one. Makes me think we won't be seeing a lot of 3rd party stuff in the Switch 2 Direct.
