Upcoming Nintendo DS Games to Look Forward To

Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem! / Golden Sun: Dark Dawn

by Matthew Blundon - June 22, 2010, 3:12 pm EDT

With so many great Nintendo DS games on the way, we decided to narrow down the very best titles coming to the platform in the next twelve months.

Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem

Publisher: Nintendo

Developer: NST

Genre: Puzzle

Release Date: Holiday 2010

At the grand opening of Mario’s new theme park, the first 100 people receive a new Mini Pauline toy. Donkey Kong, who has always had feelings for Pauline, shows up as the 101st guest and throws a frenzy. As in past Mario Vs. Donkey Kong games, he kidnaps Pauline and it is then up to Mario and his toys to rescue her.

Like previous Mario Vs. Donkey Kong games, players are faced with the task of guiding a set of Mini Mario toys through a stage filled with plenty of hazards, ranging from enemies to falling barrels. Much of the core gameplay remains the same this time around, but there are a few minor changes.

The “Super Guide” feature that appeared in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is present this time around, which refers to a help button, a new map mode, and an in-game reference guide, thus making it easier for many casual gamers to make it to the end of the game.

Using a tool kit, players can also build even more levels this time around and share them with members of the public and their friends using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Regular themed challenges will also allow gamer's creative sides to shine. By submitting an entry into a challenge, players can vote on the best levels and then the winner will be announced at the end of the contest.

Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem is promising to be a great addition to the Mario Vs. Donkey line of games, and gamers can finally get their hands on the title when it launches this holiday. Until then, you can see what Aaron thought of the game in his impressions when he got the opportunity to play it at E3.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn

Publisher: Nintendo

Developer: Camelot Software Planning

Genre: Role-Playing Game

Release Date: Holiday 2010

Set 30 years after the events of the first two games, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn follows the events of the children of the heroes of Golden Sun: The Lost Age as they explore the mystery behind the vortexes and continental movement that has been occurring across the land lately.

One of the biggest enhancements that Golden Sun: Dark Dawn has over its predecessors is the graphical overhaul. The two-dimensional graphics of the Game Boy Advance versions have been traded in for a more modern, three-dimensional look. New summoning abilities now span both of the screens as well, taking advantage of what the Nintendo DS has to offer. Touch screen controls have been implemented this time around, making controlling characters and magic abilities easier to manipulate.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn promises to be one of the best role-playing games for the Nintendo DS, and considering that the game is being developed by the creators of the first two games, longtime fans should not be worried about how the game will turn out. Both Neal and Karlie had the opportunity to demo the game at E3, and you can check out Karlie’s impressions here, while Neal’s can be read here. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn launches this holiday season.
