You like news? Want to write or edit it?

Do you like playing, talking about, and writing about video games? Does the video game industry interest you a lot? Do you read “Iwata Asks” when they come out? Are you offended by the Iwata Laugh? Do you even know who Iwata is?

If those questions all make sense to you, and you said yes to most of them, then you might be perfect for the position of Staff Writer at Nintendo World Report. You’d need to have excellent writing and editing skills, knowledge and enthusiasm for the video game industry, and frequent online availability on AIM or e-mail. It would be awesome if you have experience writing about video games and podcasting experience. Another plus would be if you live in the San Francisco or Los Angeles area and have the availability to cover different gaming events.

We're also looking for a News Editor. The position involves writing and editing news on a daily basis, as well working with other writers to get all the latest Nintendo-related news up on the site. In addition, you'll help cultivate and reshape the NWR News Policy with members of the senior staff. We're looking for someone who has experience writing and editing in some capacity, preferably with knowledge of AP Style. Naturally, you need to be passionate about video games and writing about them.

Working at Nintendo World Report doesn't come without perks. While we're a volunteer site, we do offer access to the gaming industry, chances to attend events such as E3 and PAX. We have been around since 1999, and members of our staff have gone on to work at THQ, LucasArts, Game Informer, G4, IGN, and more. Also, members of our staff have been published in Electronic Gaming Monthly, 1UP, GamePro, America Online, and many more.

If you're interested, send in a note talking about your writing and video game experience, a link to any blogs or past work you'd like to show us, and a news story written in the NWR style to nwrjobs (at) nintendoworldreport (dot) com. Depending on experience, a Skype interview and/or an editing test may be required.

Even if I don't live in Cali can I still apply to Staff Writer? Also, can I apply to both positions?

Yes, SF and LA is a plus, not a requirement. Reading comprehension is also a plus. ;)

Does this include overseas writers?

I wouldn't mind throwing my hat back in to the ring, although I have absolutely no budget to work with, which means no timely reviews of new games from me. If nothing else it will help keep me busy and "working" again. I guess News Editor is where it's at.

As far as I know, being overseas has almost no bearing on how eligible you are assuming you have strong english language skills. In fact it might be a plus given the additional cultural insights that might be had. They would like people in SF and LA because that's where the big boys have their shows and they want all the qualified warm bodies they can get on the bus to be there. *There is no bus*.

Would it be alright if I applied for the news editor position? I am unemployed at the moment and sitting around the house with absolutely nothing to do except work on my 1985 Chevy s-10 Blazer, so I am looking for something to occupy my time.

We often get review copies, and can arrange for overseas stuff, so that's not a concern (well, the timely part, maybe). But we would like somebody to focus more on news, as we have plenty of reviewers.

oohhboy's got the right idea.

Anyway guys, don't just fart around in this thread wondering if you can do it. We need people who can take initiative, so just send in your applications.

NWR needs a Trolling Editor.

Someone who will even troll Crimm.

oohhboyHong Hang Ho, Staff AlumnusOctober 12, 2011

Done.

It took a little longer to do than I liked, but good writing takes time and effort.

I thought Insanolord was our designated troll.

I threw my hat into the ring yesterday, sent off many examples of previous work and even a mock article. Only living on the East Coast will be my downfall.

Word of advice: News Editor is really a lot of work. I had to step down because I just didn't have the time for it on top of school, so make sure you're ready to put a lot of effort into it if you apply for that.

oohhboyHong Hang Ho, Staff AlumnusOctober 12, 2011

Eh, fortunately, I have nothing but time and effort to give.

I wouldn't worry about it Fleece. The whole West coast VS East coast thing is so 90's. It's all about the North and South now!
