Smash Bros. Leak Potentially Reveals New Characters

A number of videos appear to confirm last week's major leak.

Several characters new and old might be joining the fight in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS if a leak that started circulating last week is accurate. The newcomers that are a part of the leak are Shulk (from Xenoblade), Bowser Jr., Dark Pit, the Duck Hunt Dog, and — returning from Melee — Dr. Mario.

Last week, several leaks that shared similar reveals popped up. While some aspects of the leaks seemed flimsy, a series of videos posted today appear to confirm Bowser Jr. (complete in his clown car) and Shulk as newcomers and Ganondorf as a returning veteran.

If other parts of the leaks are correct, then Ness, R.O.B., Mr. Game & Watch, Falco, Jigglypuff and Wario will also be returning. That also means that Lucas, Wolf, Ice Climbers, and Snake might not be returning.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS comes out on September 13 in Japan, so it looks like we will find out soon enough if this leak is legitimate or not. If it is, then the cast of Super Smash Bros. is at least as high as 49 characters.

For a good rundown of the full leak, check out the NeoGAF thread.

Talkback

In the original 4chan thread that the leaked screens originated from, Ice Climbers, Snake, Lucas, Wolf, and the Chorus Kids from Rhythm Heaven on DS are currently being planned as DLC.

Ah dirty floors, looks like the leak could be real. The only part of it that I like is Duck Hunt Dog, who was actually one of my two guesses for this game's retro character (with the other being Sheriff). I would be okay with Bowser Jr if he had seven Koopaling costumes, though.

oop, aaaaaaaaaand leak videos are gone from the original channel.

EnnerAugust 25, 2014

The leak is looking more credible. Wonder where it came from, NoA or ESRB?

While I was unsure that Shulk deserved a spot when I read about the gematsu leak, I'm excited that he might really be in the game.

For the folks who want to watch the videos that got ripped from Youtube.

TheXenocideAugust 25, 2014

I don't care about any other character; I... Want... Duck hunt dog!!!! I've had a score to settle with that frickin dog for years!!!!

There's a completely selfish glee I have about the inclusion of Dr. Mario, who I played with primarily in Melee.  I don't expect him to play exactly the same, but if he's even remotely similar, I'll be VERY happy about that.

Moreso than that, I'm REALLY hoping it's true because of Duck Hunt Dog.  That'll probably be my favorite inclusion in the game, even moreso than Megaman or Villager, if true.  I really hope they have a reveal video for him.

AVAugust 25, 2014

I hope its quality fake because its disapointing if true.

1) Dr. Mario should be a costome for mario NOT a character, same with Dark Pit
2) From the video Bowser Jr looks pretty bad to play as so yuck
3) Shulk seems ok but really how many people are going to fight with swords
4) Duck Hunt dog should be an assist trophy not a character
5) I would be pissed if Ice Climbers are DLC or not in the game, they are unique and fun and cool
6) I don't care about Wolf or Lucas being cut
7) Snake should be in the game but I doubt it, he wasn't balanced so I am ok with him being cut
8) Ness, R.O.B., Mr. Game & Watch, Falco, Jigglypuff and Wario returning, I'm cool with them returning except Jigglypuff I never liked the character or how it played

According to speculations, it's probably coming from ESRB due to the player's name being ESRB0083 as seen from this picture: http://i.imgur.com/4we08sB.jpg

Would the ESRB have it this early? They are based in America, and its going to be released in Japan in two or so weeks so that doesn't sound right to me

Not able to see the videos--late to the party. That Shulk artwork in the image ROiDS linked to looks kind of lame, though. I'm not convinced.

10 out of 48 in the original roster.

The Ice Climbers will more then likely be DLC for the 3DS and probably normally in the Wii U version along with other to help make that version look better this holiday.  Either way, I'd imagine the Ice Climbers will still show up in the end.  Seriously, I don't see how the Ice Climbers would be cut when we've already seen the Polar Bear in Smash Run.

Every other enemy in Smash Run is from a playable series, but suddenly the Polar Bear is going to be the only exception?  Unless Sakurai really hates Ice Climber fans, that just makes no sense for them not to be playable while the Polar Bear is still running around just to tempt them.

nickmitchAugust 25, 2014

Sakurai said no DLC last year.

Not sure why that would change unless he couldn't finish the 3DS version without holding off on a few.

Technically he said there were no plans but he didn't rule it out as eventually happening.

"At the current time we have no plans," Sakurai told me. "I consider my job at this point, and my main responsibility, to make the Wii U and 3DS versions the best and the fullest experience possible. That said, once finished, it's the type of thing we could take into consideration, but for now, you could consider DLC as not being in the cards."

Plus if some characters are playable in the Wii U version but DLC in the 3DS game, it wouldn't be hard to see how this happened.  The Wii U needs Smash Bros more then the 3DS this holiday, so originally both version might have been planned to have everyone through normal methods, but then it was decided the Wii U version needed to look like a better deal, so some of the characters were taken out of the 3DS version and the only way to get them is either transferring them from the Wii U version or purchasing them separately as DLC sometime next year.

AdrockAugust 26, 2014

At this point, I'm ready to believe this. However, I think it'd be really amazing if some (or all) of the leaked screens, video, and information was fake and Sakurai was the one who leaked everything.

The game is only a little more than a month away which means physical copy replication and shipping should be starting soon. The public relations cycle also include review copies and those need to be out there.

On the ESRB, they receive and evaluate videos made by the publisher/developer that contain the most relevant content for applying a rating. The ESRB hasn't had a long history of leaks. Also, there is a rumor that the leak might have been NoA's side. Guess we'll never know for sure.

The Bowser Jr. footage on the new Battlefield really leaves no doubt. But yeah, if you need something more concrete than hearsay, there were a bunch of images of menu screens leaked as well, and today's official picture has the same omega symbol to represent Final Destination stages as shows up in the leaked shots. Don't think that had been seen previously.

The idea that full characters could actually be added later as DLC is absurd-- especially on the 3DS. The only way that could ever happen would be if that were already in the game and that was merely the method of unlocking them. Of course, if that were the case, they would still be shown as part of the full roster. So it's pretty obvious to me that those characters got cut but their names just still appear left over in the game's code (just as Toon Zelda, Dixie Kong, Roy, Dr. Mario, and Mewtwo did in Brawl), and the leaker was merely guessing they could be DLC.

CericAugust 26, 2014

There isn't any reason that a character couldn't be DLC.  On the 3DS they just need to let there be enough useable space on the cart or the ability to read them from the SD card.

How about the fact that the character data would be far too big? Not to mention, how would multiplayer work if not everyone had the downloaded characters? Additional characters that aren't pre-programmed in simply can't be added that way. The only kind of data you could expect to be offered in that manner would be texture downloads-- and I think they've already made it clear they aren't planning to do that either (the update revealing they just managed to get Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion skins for Zero Suit Samus seems proof of that)

They can do an update of the game after it is released that you have to download in order to go online.  The download includes the data for the new DLC characters.  Not hard to imagine.

True, but that would only be for ONLINE multiplayer. If they took that route, then the updated versions would be rendered incompatible for local multiplayer with non-updated versions which would cause a lot of unnecessary headaches. Trust me, DLC isn't in the works, you can clearly sense that from previous updates, and even if it was, doing it in this manner would be too complicated to warrant the effort. Seeing how the data for the cut characters found in Brawl led to the exact same speculation of DLC, there's little doubt in my mind that that's the same situation here.

I'm a little confused.  What would be the problem for local multiplayer?  If they aren't buying the DLC, there's no reason to need the update if they aren't going online.

I think he's talking about the 3DS version, where you could have two local 3DS systems wit different sets of characters. That could easily be worked around, though. If they wanted to do DLC, there's no reason they couldn't make it work.

CericAugust 27, 2014

Worst case scenario for local play the copies just send of list of who they each have and only the common ones show up on the Selection Screen.
