New Mario Game in the Works? Charles Martinet Says There Is!

On his first Facebook status comment he says the following:

Tuesday to Seattle to record a new Mario game. I'm so excited! Woo hoo!!!!!

Last Friday on Facebook, he made another comment regarding his flight:

"Just finished recording a new Mario game in Seattle. What fun! And it's going to be a really fun one!!!"

But what truly drives the point home is that on his Twitter account Charles said the following:

Awesome new Mario Game! And it's not NSMB Wii, and it's not Galaxy 2, but it's going to be crazy fun!

Considering that we already have two Mario adventures (New Super Mario Bros. Wii next month, Super Mario Galaxy 2 in 2010), then it is likely the new game is a spin-off title. This generation we have seen only one Mario Party game for the Wii and DS, so it could be Mario Party 9 for Wii. It's too soon for a Mario kart sequel, the future of the Mario sports titles by Camelot is uncertain, and what other Olympic events could Mario and Sonic participate in?

Another thing, he never mentions consoles. The new Mario game could be a DS title, or even a WiiWare or DSiWare title.

This is where the fun begins. What do YOU think? Is Charles being his old wacky self, or is he sure that it’s a new Mario title? If it’s a new game, what could it be?

Our Nintendo World Report forumers have already begun discussion on this matter.

My money is on a Mario Party. I would love a new console RPG though outside of the Paper franchise.

Ian SaneOctober 19, 2009

This isn't unexpected.  Nintendo releases some sort of Mario product on an annual basis.  It won't be a platformer and at this point those are the only Mario games I care about.

It's likely a spin-off but hopefully though it's a fresh and new spin-off with a new gameplay concept instead of Mario Party or a sport that's already been done.

Speak for yourself.

I'm still waiting for Mario Tennis WP+ edition.

I would love a new Mario Party as well, with MotionPlus and Balance Board support. I also realized it could be a new Mario RPG for Wii, since we just got Mario and Luigi 3, and its been around 2 years since we got Super Paper Mario.

Are we sure this is a Wii title?  I know there isn't that much voice acting in DS games by and large, but there might be some.  Although very unlikely, I wouldn't completely rule out a sequel to mario 64 4x4 or some spin-off of that.

Well, with NSMBW coming soon, they could be starting work on NSMB2 on the DS. I doubt it, but you never know. Start now, release it next Spring as a DSi exclusive game or something.

NinGurl69 *hugglesOctober 19, 2009

Maybe it's Super Paper Lecture, with full voice.

BlackNMild2k1October 19, 2009

Maybe is the long awaited sequel to Mario is Missing....

Princess Peach is Missing!
a 2-d sidescrolling adventure where Mario and Luigi traverse through many different levels of different area types looking for the Princess. As they travel through these different lands looking for clues to the Princess' whereabouts, they are often met with the phrase "Sorry, but your princess is in another castle." which would leave Mario and Luigi to move on to the next area looking for more clues.

I hope it's a new DS platformer or a non-sports Mario spin-off for Wii, such as a new RPG. Although Mario American Football would be OK with me.

StratosOctober 19, 2009

Haven't rumors of Mario American Football been floating around since the Gamecube era, or was that always pure speculation?

AVOctober 19, 2009

Mario Football FTW !!!!!!!

wiimotion plus support (similar motion controls to madden you can point to receivers too) Lots of unique and fun controls
online play with voice chat
optional classic controls

I can dream can't i ??

Mario American Football WOULD be the perfect game to debut that funky football controller Nintendo patented a while back.

LOL, that is going to be the next 'big' game they push with a piece of plastic.

I think the most likely game would be Mario Party 9 because we're kind of overdue for that. I'm ready for a new Mario Party. Mario Party 8 is good but it doesn't take full advantage of Wii features like it could; half of the minigames use a button-only control style. Full Mii integration and an online mode would also be great, though not necessary.

A Wii sequel to Mario Hoops could be interesting. A new Mario RPG for Wii is also possible since it doesn't have one yet.
Though a Mario character version of Super Smash Brothers would be a dream come true.

I doubt there will be a Mario American Football game because that sport is pretty much popular ONLY in North America.

StratosOctober 20, 2009

If not American Football, then what is a likely new sport of Mario & Co to play? Rugby, maybe? That has a global appeal I think. Well, I know both NA, EU and Australia like it. I don't know how big it is in Japan/rest-of-Asia. But at least it has broader appeal than American Football.

I don't know anyone here in North America who has any real clue how to even play Rugby.  American Football might not have broad appeal worldwide but North America is the LARGEST market.  Mario Football would probably sell better than Mario Rugby.

Mario Ice Hockey would have more international appeal than football but it isn't popular in Japan and I know Nintendo would base their entire decision on that.

I hope either Mario 64 2 or Yoshi's Island 2 makes good use of Motown Plus

They already made Mario Ice Hockey, it's called Mario Strikers; that game is pretty much a remake of NES Ice Hockey.

BlackNMild2k1October 20, 2009

Ian wouldn't know that because Ian doesn't play Wii games.

Except that's, you know, a SOCCER game!

you mean football?

BlackNMild2k1October 20, 2009

futbol....?

StratosOctober 20, 2009

Footy?

I like the idea of a Mario Hockey game made by the people who made the Strikers game. Who was it again? First Level?

A soccer/football game that plays almost exactly like hockey. The only real difference is that it is played on a field and with a ball that's kicked around instead of a puck that's slapped with a stick. The difference is superficial.

I just threw up in my mouth.

NWR_pap64Pedro Hernandez, Contributing WriterOctober 20, 2009

Next Level Games, and shut your mouth Mop! If it wasn't for them we would still be dreaming of a Punch Out sequel.

There's a Birdo-sized cork here somewhere.

Birdo doesn't throw up, he just refluxes gastro fluids.

Calm down, Punch-Out!! is the type of game they are suited to make. They should not be allowed near the Mario franchise however.

PeachylalaOctober 20, 2009

I completely disagree.

Mario Strikers and Charged are still my favorite sports games in the Mario Franchise. Hell, they made Peach's ass sizzle. Best Canadian game developer ever.

Mop it upOctober 20, 2009

The games have their fans but I didn't care for them. They're pretty imbalanced, have a lack of features, and the dark take on the characters makes them feel mean-spirited.

Camelot handled the Mario franchise the best, it'd be great if they're back to working on something.

NinGurl69 *hugglesOctober 20, 2009

Daisy's ass sizzles.

D_AverageOctober 21, 2009

Hmmm, its about time for Mario Football, which would certainly be "crazy fun"!

D_AverageOctober 21, 2009

An NFL game would be the shiz

hylianhero5249October 25, 2009

If it is a spinoff game, I want it to be Mario Party 9. I was a fan of the earlier ones. I owned Mario Party 2 or 3 and 5, and played MP 1-5.
