Our beloved Director, Steven "Windyman" Rodriguez, joins us for the first thirty minutes to spill all the beans on Super Smash Bros. Brawl. We ask lots of questions, get lots of answers, and try to convince Jon that he shouldn't be afraid of the game. Then we fulfill the rest of the episode's title with a brief and hilarious debate on the Super Bowl, led by fanatical foreigners, Greg Leahy and Jon Lindemann.

Then the normal show begins, with a healthy New Business (bid on Jonny's auction here) and loads of great forum posts and reader mail. Keep it coming, please! Our old friend and former RFN host, Karl Castaneda, also shows up with an audio review of No More Heroes against the backdrop of a song called "No More Heroes".

Besides devoting many hours to editing this long, complex podcast, James has made some improvements to the audio files. The AAC format is now enhanced with chapters and photos, and the MP3 bit rate has been reduced to make the files smaller.

Listening to the show now.

By the way, if you guys liked those songs, the first one played is indeed a song called "No More Heroes." It's by a band called The Stranglers. You should all recognize the second song, but if you don't, it's "Heroes," by David Bowie, which was chosen NOT ONLY because the first song ran out of time before I stopped jabbering, but ALSO because No More Heroes was originally just called Heroes.

Anyway, yeah, that was probably the last time my voice will come out of your speakers while you're listening to RFN. Live it up, haters.

ok why do i keep getting episode 84... i refuse to use I tunes but i was wondering what the deal was did you guys put the wrong episode up for people like me who hate apple?

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorFebruary 07, 2008

Jonny probably just didn't change the episode in the URL when he used last week's article as a template. The correct URL is:

Yes. Yes it does.

GoldenPhoenixFebruary 07, 2008

For the record, I haven't played most of my 3rd party games yet. In fact I haven't played many of my 1st party games yet!

Did the enhanced AAC feed work?

GoldenPhoenixFebruary 07, 2008

I have to agree about Brawl, my hype dropped a bit after seeing the clones return, especially of Ganondorf, but also like what was said the rest of the game, especially the levels are AMAZING.

wulffman04February 07, 2008

Karl... *sigh* you disappoint me.

EDIT: I was fooled by the bad-link. ARGH!!!

As far as I can tell, the MP3 feed is correct. It definitely has the URL of the new episode. Actually, I may have forgotten to update the direct download links in the article, so I'll check on that right away.

By the way, you can use the feeds to automatically download new episodes even if you have some strange aversion to iTunes, which is a very good media player anyway. There are many other programs that will let you load up podcast feeds.

LOL Crimm isn't hardcore enough for Zack and Wiki.

Windy, Cassamassina (or was it Bozon?) mentioned the same failures to connect that you did in his Brawl previews. (You should email some of your fellow journalists to play Smash Bros online)

WHAT!?!?!? You couldn't find the source? In the news story I posted? ARGH! It's right there Crimm! It's right there!

REead the article people, I mean, ahhh! Read the article!

WHAT?!?!? IT DIDN'T SAY THAT??? READ PEOPLE! READDDDDD!!!!

AHH!!! I'm being impugned left and right!!!!

WHAT?!?!?!

Far Cry was... good... god...

Hey...hey... I am not part of the problem. I own third party games! &P

With regards to the last question: Yes. Peach is really hot.

CericFebruary 08, 2008

It sounds like Sonic and the Secret Rings. I'm sure the stickers would help with the movement rate.

Lies Lies. No new feature.

Not really a multimedia machine because think about the PS3. I mean remote play, Web Browsing, CD/DVD/BluRay, Media Streaming, Multiformat of Music and Video Playback, DVR in Europe, etc.

I use to vote in all of them but when I got the PS3 I sort of slipped out of that.

Dewy's Adventure, Excite Truck, Super Monkey Ball, Sonic and the Secret Ring, Marble Madness, Trauma Center, etc.

Hotter than Daisy, anyway.

Hey i was born during a cursed buffalo super bowl game!

Super Bowl XXV FTW!

Dan_FlyhightFebruary 08, 2008

Whoo! 2 hours of fun! I wish all my podcasts were this long. And I can answer what control style some tournaments for brawl will use. I did put it up in the brawl discussion forum, but let me summarize: Working at GameStop I found out through my managers and District Manager, that GameStops will be having tournaments for the midnight release of brawl (at least in my area) I instinctively asked what the control scheme would be and they said the wii-mote and nunchuck and because of my disbelief of it, they showed me the official papers. So at least for the GameStop launch Tournament, it will be the wii-mote and nunchuck.

SarailFebruary 09, 2008

Although I don't have the amount of games that Kairon or GoldenPhoenix have, I thought I would go ahead and post what I own, too. I always like hearing about what games other people own anyway. :P Anyhoo, here's my Wii collection thus far:

Wii Sports, GT Pro Series, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Excitetruck, Metal Slug Anthology, Red Steel, Sonic & the Secret Rings, Wii Play, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Super Paper Mario, Resident Evil 4, DDR: Hottest Party, Battalion Wars 2, Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, MLB Power Pros, Link's Crossbow Training, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, Zak & Wiki, Mario Strikers Charged, Super Mario Galaxy, Guilty Gear XX, Fire Emblem 10, Guitar Hero III, and No More Heroes.

Total: 25 games.

I think I own a pretty good selection of Wii games. Some good 3rd party choices, and of course, the good 1st party games, too. I'd have to say my guilty pleasure choices would have to be GT Pro Series and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. I just wanted a racing game at the launch of the Wii, and MK intrigued me by demos I saw of people pulling off moves with motion control (it works for the most part...I was just disappointed by the fatality system).

Anyhoo, still listening to the podcast right now as I'm almost finished with it. Good stuff so far. Keep up the great work, guys. Greg cracks me up. :P

Karl's review of No More Heroes was bittersweet. face-icon-small-sad.gif Shine on You Crazy Diamond

bgrugby60February 09, 2008

On the football discussion, as I mentioned on the Super Bowl thread, the first pro team to ever go undefeated was the 1948 Cleveland Browns in the AAFC (15-0) not the 1972 Dolphins...as much as Mercury "Just Drop Dead Already" Morris disagrees with.

Did the enhanced AAC feed work?

I watched/listened to the podcast via Quicktime.  Did it just not work right, or does the "enhanced" version suck?  I only saw like a half dozen pictures during the entire episode.  It would just stop on the same picture for a half hour at a time.  I was expecting lots of pictures, movies, etc.  I was disappointed.  I'm halfway through episode 85 and so far have only seen three pictures (SMB3 screen shot, Lords of Thunder box art, and Miami Nights box art).

Video?  What do you think this is?  Pictures come with new chapters.  To add more pictures I need to add more chapters.

vuduFebruary 28, 2008

Really?  That's dumb.  I realize it's not your fault, but what's the point?  After Karl talked up the "enhanced" podcasts so much, I'm disappointed that they're so limited.

Rachtman, I don't see Geometry Wars in that list!  Where's the love?  Haven't we convinced you yet?
