The Sega-published 3D Fighter is coming at you this May.

Today High Voltage revealed Tournament of Legends, previously titled Gladiator A.D., exclusively for Wii. The game is set to release on May 18 and published by Sega, who also published High Voltage's The Conduit.

The game is a 3D Fighter steeped in Greek and Roman mythology. The game will feature weapons, magic attacks, and environmental hazards. Some of the characters included in the game are a minotaur, a gladiator, a gorgon, a stone golem, and a valkyrie.

Tournament of Legends will support multiple control methods, including Wii Remote and Nunchuk, and the Classic Controller. The game runs on the Quantum 3 engine, which was also used in The Conduit.

The game had previously been shown off at E3 2009 in non-playable form. You can view our coverage of that event here. Early reports suggested the game would use MotionPlus, but it is unknown if the final product supports the peripheral.

Nintendo World Report will have more information on Tournament of Legends as it becomes available.

SEGA CHALLENGES Wii GAMERS TO ENTER THE TOURNAMENT OF LEGENDS™

Become a Legend in Epic Weapon & Magic Duels

SAN FRANCISCO (February 3rd, 2010) – SEGA® of America, Inc. is excited to announce a new project in partnership with developer High Voltage Software - Tournament of Legends™. Exclusive for Wii™, Tournament of Legends is a weapon and magic based 3D-fight game featuring some of the biggest playable characters on Wii. Each fighter is based on a legend from world mythology: the Minotaur, a powerful Gladiator, Gorgon, Stone Golem, Valkyrie and other well-known and powerful characters. The game is scheduled for release on May 18th, 2010.

Tournament of Legends features epic battles in fantastic fighting arenas where they will wield mythical blade weapons, launch 40 magic attacks, and dodge giant mythological creatures that protect the battle lairs. In intense one and two-player fights, players master a range of character and weapon based magic attacks; including unleashing, amongst others, a man-eating lion, Jupiter’s Storm, Thor’s Fury and a nest of venomous snakes.

Tournament of Legends strives to offer even the most sophisticated Wii gamer a rich weapon fighting experience. Players will be able to switch weapons and enchantments with other characters or compete in various Wii Remote™/Nunchuk™ controller challenges which include dodging giant mythological creatures or restoring health and armor during fights. The game also features an Interactive Training mode and supports the Classic Controller™.

Tournament of Legends cinematic effects and graphics are fueled by the High Voltage Software Quantum 3 engine, designed and optimized for Wii. Large, 3D mythological fighters move fluidly. Fighting arenas, characters, and magical attacks are polished by advanced real-time lighting, blended animation, cinematic color curves, and more. And the fighters’ mythic journeys are told through beautifully hand drawn in-game cinematics.

“Tournament of Legends is a perfect Wii game” said Sean Ratcliffe, Vice President of Marketing at SEGA of America. “High Voltage are delivering yet another fantastic looking game and their roster of gods, demons and warriors is unlike any other brawler out there. I can imagine that fathers and sons will be using a quick fight on Tournament of Legends as the ultimate tie-breaker in family disputes!”

"With Tournament of Legends, we want to take the Wii weapon-based fighting to a bigger place. Along with a wide selection of blade weapons and animated magic attacks we’ve achieved rich graphical effects and detailed, epic characters with the Quantum 3 engine. The mythological characters are some of the biggest 3D playable characters on Wii.” said Eric Nofsinger, COO of High Voltage Software.

Tournament of Legends is set to release on May 18th, 2010 exclusively for Wii.

Talkback

The graphics look great so far. Is this still first-person? The screenshots are ambiguous.

My concern is that Sega will push for a T rating to help sales, which is a smart business move, but will look totally silly as these characters swing their giant "blade weapons" and draw no blood.

It was never first-person. It's always been over-the-shoulder a la Punchout.

Anyway, this game needs A LOT of polish based on the last video they showed. I don't know if they can pull it off by May.

BlackNMild2k1February 03, 2010

I see they got rid of the CSI: Miami haze and added more interesting characters.

I was telling everyone that that show Spartacus looked alot like the old game, but now it's not so much like the new one.

From what I've heard, they actually changed it from the Punch-Out/first-person viewpoint it originally had. I think it's more of a third-person behind-the-back fighter now.

Still waiting for a word from Eric Nofsinger. Hopefully he'll respond to my e-mail.

IGN published a hands-on that confirms no motion plus. Also, local multiplayer but no online multiplayer.

I'm pleased to announce that our own Jared Rosenberg will have impressions for this game up soon!

The IGN story did say the controls worked very well so and has optional classic controller support:

My feeling is the combat is allot like no more heroes special moves which is fine.

Does it look Silly in Soul Calibur when all those characters swing big swords and no blood comes out ??  ;)

Seeing no blood would be drastic after the E3 demo. A character STOMPED on his opponent's nuts for roughly a minute.

I kid you not. This really happened. Ask James, Aaron, or Nick. They all saw it.

Why ask when you can SEE?  (Okay, so it was 10 seconds.  It still felt like forever.)

StratosFebruary 04, 2010

I'm not as interested in the game as I was before. Though if it turns out to be what Soul Calibur could be if it used the WiiMote and is executed well I might consider picking it up.

D_AverageFebruary 06, 2010

I'm not interested much either.  It just looks incredibly bland, as if its nothing more than a third person fighter with a run of the mil gladiator skin over it.

StratosFebruary 07, 2010

This looks more like a final project for a group of game development students; it technically looks nice and plays well enough, but it lacks the charm and polish of a professional and experienced dev team.

I keep thinking that HVS could do amazing things if they were owned and overseen by the N64 era Nintendo a la Rare Ware.

What makes this game awesome?
