Video Games Sales to Top $31 Billion in 2002 - Study

LONDON (Reuters) - The video games industry is on track for a record year in 2002, with global sales projected to increase by 12 percent to $31 billion, a new report by British research firm Informa Media Group said on Monday.

Wow! Look what I found in my mailbox! And I bet you all thought (or hoped) I was dead! Actually, I was looking for GameCube games today and I didn't see Lost Kingdoms anywhere, so expect it out tomorrow or Tuesday.

According to GameCube Europe, Infogrames will be releasing Superman: Shadow of the Apokolips and Mission Impossible to GameCube in that territory. Superman is currently set for March 19, 2003 and MI's date is TBA.

We contacted Infogrames' North American offices and they had nothing to announce regarding a US release of these games, but there could be announcements in the future.

Head over to Eternal Darkness Films to check out the ten semi-finalists. Each film is rather short (five minutes or less), but a few of them are very, very sweet. According to Nintendo Dream, Mario Sunshine’s commercials will go on air in Japan on June 29. The commercial will feature in game footage sporting the catch phrase – “The best adventure of Super Mario will be realized on the GameCube.”

According to Nintendo Dream’s Q&A section with Nintendo, Spaceworld will not be held this year. Nintendo is, however, looking into holding smaller events across Japan so fans everywhere can have a chance to play the Nintendo titles.

Quest, the development group behind the latest Tactics Ogre games, is now a part of Squaresoft.

GameSpot reports that Quest announced on Wednesday that they have handed over their software development division over to Squaresoft. Quest was responsible for both Ogre Battle 64 and Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis for GBA, as well as the other games in the Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre series.

The Game Critics Awards announced their Best of E3 2002 winners today, and Doom III for PC took most of the top awards, including Best of Show. Nintendo's Legend of Zelda for GameCube was voted runner-up for Best of Show and took the prize for Best Console Game, though oddly, it didn't get first or second place for Best Action/Adventure Game.

Next month, on July 13th and 14th, the World Hobby Fair will be taking place in Japan. It is at this event that Sega has said Sonic Team will be unveiling the next Sonic the Hedgehog game. At this time it is currently unknown which platform(s) this new Sonic game will be available on.
