Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem Still Exists

Have hope! It looks like the game hasn't been scrapped yet.

Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem appears to still be in the works over at Atlus, according to Nintendo's latest earnings release.

While we haven't heard a thing about this game since it was first unveiled in January 2013, the Wii U-exclusive crossover is still included in Nintendo's launch schedule. There's no release window for the game, however, so don't expect it to hit store shelves anytime soon.

Do you think SMT x FE will eventually see the light of day, or are those of us hoping to play the game in 2016 being overly optimistic?

I feel like I should stick this game in the same category as Last Guardian.

Except we've actually seen footage of The Last Guardian. All we've ever seen of this game is a concept art montage from other games. Nintendo needs to show actual footage from this game if they want anyone to take it seriously.

I don't know if it's quite to that point, but it's not that far off.

But...but...but Intelligent Systems couldn't possibly be working on 2 Fire Emblem games at the same time! That's what I kept hearing these past few weeks!

With the enthusiasm of the fan bases involved and two companies with a history of secrecy and short marketing time frames, perhaps it was a mistake to reveal the existence of this game so early in its development.

I have confidence that this game is still being made, but it is a case ala Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - The Crystal Bearers that games shouldn't be revealed as soon as a contract is agreed upon.

They revealed its existence when they did because they were desperate for ways to get people excited about the Wii U. Under other circumstances they probably would have waited a while.

And usually when Nintendo comes out and says the game still exists that means it has a good chance of being released though there are a few of examples of this not happening.

I am looking forward to the game once it releases.

But it's more fun to freak out that it was cancelled.

In the extremely unlikely event this game still manages to get released, I seriously doubt it will be out before next year. It might not be canceled but it is not coming out this year.

Oh wow, this is great news. I had totally given up on the title - much like Flipnote Studio - so hearing it's still (probably) alive in some form is fantastic.

It's being developed by Atlus so I guess technically that's true.

I still think the game will be released if only because Nintendo would have quietly killed it instead of bringing it up again. Without a release window or any real evidence of its progress, it's possible (and probably a good idea) that the game was delayed for an early Wii U successor release.

If Atlus is developing this I may need to pre-order it considering the scarcity of Nintendo supply lately and the notorious limited runs of Atlus products. Though I'm sure I have plenty of time to save for it.

That does present an interesting question: Will this be on Atlus sale rotation (every other week after a few months) or Nintendo (once a year, MAYBE)?

I suspect if this game ever comes out, it won't be a Wii U game . It'll either be moved to the 3DS or the Wii U's successor. It just doesn't make sense to have a Wii U game in development after this year when the game could be turning a profit elsewhere.

"It just doesn't make sense..."

So it'll still be a Wii U game? :P

Since news of the development of this game has been scarce, it's hard to make more solid guesses. The Wii U game could be so far along that it wouldn't make sense to hold it back. Yeah, it's current date is TBD, but the game could be only 9-15 months away from being finished. Though it could also mean it is 24 months away.

So it will stubbornly refuse to drop it's price. I assume that will be the case for a lot of these 3rd party collaborations.
