What could Nintendo have to announce so soon after E3?

Nintendo will be hosting a Nintendo Direct event noon tomorrow (11:00 PM Eastern, 8:00 PM Pacific, 5:00 AM Europe), for the Japanese market.

Hosted by Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata, the announcement states that Nintendo will be talking about software and news for the 3DS and Wii. Both systems played a secondary role to Wii U during E3.

As with previous events, Nintendo Direct will be streamed via Ustream and Nico Nico Live, and will be viewable on the Nintendo Direct Japanese website. As of posting, no other region has announced companion Nintendo Direct events of their own.

Talkback

Oh, maybe we'll see some footage of the extra games in the Kirby anniversary collection.

SarailJune 21, 2012

Megaton announcements, right? RIGHT?!  ::)

PhilPhillip Stortzum, June 21, 2012

I hope the most overzealous of fans don't over hype yet another Nintendo event only to pretend that Nintendo let down their impossible expectations.

ThePermJune 21, 2012

eh, they should talk about wii u, becuase like the wii is a netflix machine now

ToraJune 21, 2012

E3 expectations are expected.  Espeically when their new console is due in just five or six months.

Only like two or three first party games for Wii-U.  That seriously sucks.

broodwarsJune 21, 2012

Now would be a really good time for me for Nintendo to announce a 3DS redesign, considering I'm just on the verge of getting one.  :P: :

Spak-SpangJune 21, 2012

So Perm, they should talk about how Wii U has Netflix...and demo how great it is compared to all other Netflix?

Chozo GhostJune 21, 2012

Hopefully this will be the E3 we never had! :)

PicoliJune 21, 2012

North American Nintendo Direct tonight at midnight (ET). They'll be talking about Wii and 3DS, no mention of Wii U. Via their official Facebook page.

Bman87301June 21, 2012

Considering that Nintendo had been saying all along that they'd be announcing the Wii U price and launch details in the weeks following E3, it's a pretty safe assumption that this is that big announcement. I'd also have to assume they'll be taking this opportunity unveil new games for 2013 releases since E3 focused entirely on 2012 games.

I also expect a release date and final Western name for Fire Emblem: Kakusei.

That's not a safe assumption at all considering they're specifically talking about non-Wii U stuff.

SarailJune 21, 2012

I wonder if Nate Bildhorf will host the North American ND? He would if it were up to me...

It's been confirmed that Reggie is hosting it, which makes sense because each region is having its president host it.

You're right, safe was probably a poor choice of words... Reasonable is what I really meant-- and I still stand by that. I'm thinking all the software announcements will be focused on DS, 3DS, and Wii, but Wii U's will get a brief announcement of its price and launch date.

I'm really hoping for Animal Crossing. It wouldn't demo great in video or playable form in an E3 setting, so it seems plausible they just ignored it there because of that.

But it's not that either. And there's no reason to release the price this far out if they haven't revealed it already.

Calling it now... Nintendo Land Wii and Nintendo Land 3DS. :D

broodwarsJune 21, 2012

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that Nintendo of America is going to announce an NoA release for Pandora's Tower.  The announcement specifically mentions Wii announcements, and I doubt they're going to spend more than a minute or so on the Kirby Collection.  I'm not sure what they could be announcing for 3DS, though.  I was going to pick up a 3DS today, but I think I'll wait till tomorrow just to be safe.

I think for 3DS the two real possibilities for games, at least on the first party side, are Fire Emblem, which we already know is coming thanks to Reggie's loose lips, and Animal Crossing. As for Wii, I'm not sure what else it could be than Pandora's Tower, assuming it entails anything beyond the Kirby collection.

Um, how about that the fact that the launch is only a four months away at the very most? Also if I'm not mistaken, they specifically said they'd be announcing the details shortly after E3 -- Considering the timing, it's most definitely a reasonable conclusion.

They also specifically said this conference is about 3DS and Wii, not Wii U.

SarailJune 21, 2012

And Nintendo also said its entire E3 Tuesday morning press conference was going to be all Wii U... but it still snuck in some 3DS love.

So yeah. You don't know for sure. ;)

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorJune 21, 2012

With any luck, they'll end it with Reggie saying "Oh, and one more thing"... then fake fireworks and a single piece of confetti.

Then, cue back to Reggie holding Bananas for no reason.

You're mistaken. They never said shortly; they said they had quite a while until launch to come up with those details.

You'd have a valid point if  they straight out specified no Wii U news, but they didn't do that-- they just conveniently left it unmentioned.

Like I said, I'm expecting new software reveals to only be for DS, 3DS, and Wii-- it definitely won't be Wii U-focused, but it doesn't mean it won't be mentioned.

If all they were planning to do was just slyly mention the Wii U price and date (which is especially likely if the final price $300+) while keeping the rest of the show exclusive to the current systems, leaving Wii U unmentioned is precisely how I'd expect them to announce it-- otherwise this would specifically be seen as a show about Wii U's announcement, which they'd want to avoid if they're aiming to downplay it (let's not forget that at 12:00am EST this ND is notably later most anyway).

I don't blame you for being skeptical to avoid getting your hopes up if ends up not being revealed, but the facts remain that a Wii U price announcement is more than reasonable to expect.

Unless they drastically change their schedule, there are still two more Nintendo Directs before the Wii U launch.

I wasn't aware that they had a preset schedule-- I was under the impression that these were all random. If that is the case then maybe I am wrong... but I really can't imagine what new news they could possibly have between now then that would warrant two NDs between now and then...

Well I'd imagine one of them will be focused on the early 2013 (pre-E3) lineup for the Wii U and 3DS. The other I think would be the one with the Wii U details about price, release date, more online stuff and the like.

I'm okay with this if he follows it by saying, "No Donkey Kong game announcement. I was just hungry."

Nintendo Announced Wii Launch Details in September 14, roughly two months before the system came out. http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/12047

Nintendo Announced 3DS Launch Details in January 19, roughly two months before the system came out. http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24774

Conclusion: It would be a very cold day in hell if Wii U price/date are announced tonight.

I'd say, at the earliest, it'll be in the August Nintendo Direct, or a separate event in September.

True, but Nintendo may feel the need to exercise some serious damage control after their E3 performance was pretty widely criticized for lacking in information and not conveying it well.  I could see Wii U launch details getting potentially revealed here, but more than likely they'll just stick to Wii and 3DS as they've said.
