Nintendo also announced the 3DS would have a 3D movie trailer service, a short-form 3D video channel, and 3D video recording.

Nintendo announced a partnership with Netflix to bring content to the Nintendo 3DS this summer. Netflix members will be able to resume videos from other devices such as the Wii. Viewing will be in 2D.

In terms of 3D content, movie trailers will be viewable following the May system update.

A short-form video service acts like a portable Nintendo Channel exclusive to 3DS with Nintendo-moderated content such as comedy clips and music videos.

The 3DS will also allow users to record their own videos in 3D.

Smart move Nintendo, very smart!

SilverQuilavaMarch 02, 2011

I was hoping for this! Hell yeah!

Why no 3D streaming from Netflix? Other than that I'm all for this, except the Nintendo moderated part, it should be age restricted and moderated by the community, as in people rate something as 17+ that the creator rated 10+. But then again there's the lawsuit issue and Nintendo's family friendly image.

My guess is that it may be added in a later update if trailers are going to be in 3D.

Netflix is not gonna come up with 3D streaming just for 3DS, they are gonna wait for 3D TV's to become more common (they are still extremely niche right now).

BlackNMild2k1March 02, 2011

nobody paged me on this news!?

I guess that action would have been saved for the 3D Netflix announcement. But this is a good start. Ball is in Netflix court now to launch a 3D service.

MaryJaneMarch 02, 2011

Something tells me the 3DS is going to be more quickly adopted than 3DTVs.

BlackNMild2k1March 02, 2011

Most definitely.

NWR Staff:
can one of you contact Netflix and inquire about 3D services?

I hope that Netflix is integrated into the eShop so that we can purchase movies to store onto the SD card.

BlackNMild2k1March 02, 2011

Netflix doesn't sell movies.

They rent disc and stream movies to your internet capable device.

pololmejorMarch 02, 2011

I live in Mexico and I hate that I can't have Netflix service on my Wii. Can I on my 3DS?

TJ SpykeMarch 02, 2011

Not unless Netflix decides to expand their service into Mexico like they did with Canada last year. It's for legal reasons since they have to make deals with the movie companies to get permission for that.

Well what I had in mind for them to adopt would be to charge for the subscription and if I like a movie I can buy it from them and keep for myself like iTunes.

Is Hulu and Youtube access all but guaranteed ??

TJ SpykeMarch 02, 2011

YouTube, probably. Hulu has gone to efforts to block access from some Internet capable devices though.

MaryJaneMarch 02, 2011

Youtube yes, since anything with an internet connection and flash can do Youtube. Hulu, unlikely as they are one of the most finnicky content providersa in the internet's short history. I am hoping that Youtube 3D works and the 3DS can upload to it, it would be a boon for both Nintendo and Youtube.

My RFN prediction comes true!

Enjoy it, this will never happen again.
