You'll be catching 'em all in a whole new dimension.

During a Q&A session following last week's Investor Conference, Satoru Iwata confirmed that he had indeed indicated that a Pokemon title is in progress for Nintendo 3DS. With such an announcement, naturally, the the prominence of the 3D was in question.

In talking to Nintendo's investors, President Satoru Iwata said in response to a question as to whether including 3D in a Pokemon game is contradictory to health warnings for children under six years of age, "Naturally, we expect 3D viewing to become one of the attractions when the new Pokémon title is released on Nintendo 3DS, but a number of other attractions, which do not depend upon the 3D aspect, shall also be realized."

He also went on to say, "I have no hesitation about the prospect that a Pokémon-franchise title will be released for Nintendo 3DS." It's important to note that no release date has been set for Pokémon 3DS, or even what stage of development it's in.

Wow, this is a lot of big name game announcements from Nintendo.

When are they going to announce Zelda and a new Metroid Prime series?

Ian SaneFebruary 02, 2011

"Pokemon" can mean anything.  This doesn't mean it's anything special.  It just means Pokemon product and we all know that doesn't mean any quality assurance.

With Black & White coming out so soon I highly doubt Iwata is talking about the next REAL Pokemon game or at the very least, if he is, it is far off in the future.

BlackNMild2k1February 02, 2011

But Black & White need a Grey. How long does it usually take for the 3rd version of a set to come out?

nickmitchFebruary 02, 2011

When he said "the new Pokémon title," I got excited. When he said, "a new franchise title," I got a little worried. I'll still hope for a main series Pokémon title in 3D, though. I think the language would've somehow been more ambiguous otherwise.

All 3DS games will have 3D AFAIK, so nothing new here. We also already knew that they were working on Pokemon games for 3DS (they confirmed it before).

Based on the GBA and DS, we will probably get the next mainline entries sometime in 2013.

BNM, the third game usually comes out about 1-2 years after the first two (31 months for Yellow, 13 months for Crystal, 20 months for Emerald, 20 months for Platinum).

but that is when they are all on the same platform right?
Anyone thing it's likely/possible that Nintendo releases "Grey" towards the end of this year, or early next (Jan. 2012) exclusively for 3DS?

Nintendo has said developers aren't required to support 3D, which shouldn't be surprising given the lack of requirements for support of widescreen or 480p on the Wii. I can't imagine many games will be released without the capability (at least at retail), especially from Nintendo themselves, but it's possible.

TJ SpykeFebruary 02, 2011

I don't know, Nintendo has never had to deal with a situation like this since they never released two generations of games on the same system before. I suppose it is possible for it to be on 3DS, or maybe it will come out early next year like with Crystal.

Maybe insano, but I haven't heard of any 3DS games yet that won't support it. I am not saying there won't be, but I hope Nintendo requires it.

While a Pokemon Version game on 3DS sounds like a great idea, maybe it'll be like Battle revolution. The 3D pokemon would look cool on that.

Now that they have a handheld with the horsepower to handle it, the battles in the mainline Pokemon games should look as good as those in Battle Revolution, if not better. Not holding my breath on that, though.

There's a lot they could do with the series that they haven't done, but if they make the battles of the regular game have interesting visuals, there'd be no reason for them to release a console "stadium-style" game.

BlackNMild2k1February 02, 2011

Good. then maybe they can make the PokeMMOn console game or atleast a real Pokemon RPG for the console instead.
maybe something that uses the 3DS as the controller and a Pokedex.

Guitar SmasherFebruary 03, 2011

So who was worried there wasn't going to be another handheld Pokemon?

HardcoreNintendoFanFebruary 03, 2011

My hope is a compilation of the regions. So in the game you go through all the current regions and this could be grey, start out in Unova and then go to Hoenn and then Sinnoh and so on. Not only that but it would be cool if you could decide to restart back at lv5 but still have you pokemon from the other regions being usable. Then once you beat all the regions the wild pokemon jump to lv50+. And as an added bonus finally let us go to the Orange Islands for one final leg of the challenges. This is my hope, it isn't confirmed that this is the game. Anyways it will be out by next year for everyone other than Japan. They'll get the game this fall.

They probably would never do this. Each game costs approximately $30-40 USD. If all of the games were put into one, it would significantly higher the price for all the extra storage necessary and for the game content itself. However, they might do it with the only goal to be to catch em' all, but that would put a lot less variety into the game. There might be remakes of the games, individually, in 3D, like they have with the Nintendo 64 games, but I wouldn't expect a game with all five regions anytime soon.

lizardmanFebruary 07, 2011

soooooo will the third version of pokemon black/white be for the 3ds? if so that would be a new thing for them to jump system compatability like that but to me it seems like they are trying to do things different anyway and you should take into consideration that the nintendo company is more concerned with the release date in japan so our aquward situation could just be caused by them neglecting us :'( . either way i really dont care because i only own a ds for the pokemon games so if they release pokemon "grey" for ds instead of 3ds that just means i dont have to spend 200 some dollars on a new 3ds. but it would be nice to see colloseum level graphics. sorry for the long post
