The Eternal Darkness devs are taking a crack at Marvel's mutants.

Silicon Knights is leading development of the upcoming Activision-published X-Men game, X-Men: Destiny, according to IGN.

The game, revealed earlier today, puts you in the shoes of a new mutant recruit in a branching storyline with lots of choice. The style of the gameplay is unknown, but it is likely to an RPG, especially since Silicon Knights was rumored to be working on a Marvel RPG prior to the announcement.

Silicon Knights is known in Nintendo circles for their work on Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, both for GameCube. Their last game was Too Human for Xbox 360.

More information should be revealed this weekend at New York Comic Con. Until then, watch the gameplay-free teaser trailer below.

So this game is coming out for Wii2, PS4 & Xbox720?

If Too Human hadn't turned out so badly, I'd actually be looking forward to this game now.  :-\  Is the talent that did Eternal Darkness and Twin Snakes still at Silicon Knights?

I remember before the Gamecube launched and there was all this anticipation of Nintendo's next console.  Nintendo had what I saw as a dream team of Nintendo themselves, Rare, Retro Studios and Silicon Knights.  I was pumped about those partnerships.  They seemed ideal since Nintendo's second parties offered a different style than Nintendo themselves.  Nintendo could ensure the high quality but the different teams would allow for more variety than what Nintendo would provide on their own.

I remember checking out Silicon Knights' web site once a week just to see if they updated SOMETHING.  Eternal Darkness and Too Human just had me all hyped up.  They were mature games, they had stories.  They seemed to have all the cool elements that Nintendo always seemed to lack.  This was how I could get Nintendo quality gameplay in titles that were not cutesy family friendly fare.

Everything turned to shit.  Nintendo turned Dinosaur Planet from an interesting new IP to a Star Fox spinoff and then sold Rare off to Microsoft.  SK made Eternal Darkness and then instead of Too Human were used as a port house for someone else's game (I love MGS and the Twin Snakes is awesome but probably ANYONE could have made that game).  Then they went to Microsoft as well.  Only Retro remained of the the "dream team" I envisioned.  And the thing is the tools where there.  Retro's Metroid Prime games are very un-Nintendo in a good way.  Eternal Darkness was much the same way.  Rare's Nintendo titles, particularly Perfect Dark and Conker also fit this mold.  My hope was that these companies could provide some variety for Nintendo by making games with a very un-Nintendo style but with clear Nintendo gameplay.  All three companies demonstrated they could do that.

So it's sad to see SK now making an X-Men game.  Pardon me for making the generalization but it's a licenced game by Activision.  I assume it will be a nothing title.  I used to care a lot about these guys.  I used to dream about what sort of titles they would be making with Nintendo at this point.  Things went the exact opposite direction I hoped for.

I would say that after the break up of that "dream team" that all four partners are worse off.  SK and Rare are pretty much nothing now.  Nintendo has found considerable financial success but I have been quite vocal of my dislike of their current direction.  I won't go into detail but their golden years are behind them.  Only Retro has made it through okay but even then we'll have to see how DKC turns out.  They very much made Metroid their own much like how Rare made Donkey Kong their own.  But now they've inherited DK and seem to be sticking to Rare's old mold.  It seems very similar to how things ended with SK and Rare, working on someone else's franchise like you're Tose or something.

Nintendo's biggest problem is that they have no variety.  Same franchises, same family-friendly style, some everything.  It's stuffy, corporate and soulless.  That was the very problem that this "dream team" of sorts was supposed to fix.  When Nintendo broke the team up this is the EXACT end result you would expect.

For the exception of Rockstar and Bioware, this dream team was a group of my favorite developers. But there is a chance that Silicone Knights could get back with Nintendo.

some of the talent is still there. John Dobbie who was one of the lead artists on Eternal Darkness and Twin Snakes is working for Sony on the God of War series now.

not to mention I've heard accounts Dyack has gotten weird...like all the fame has gotten to his head and now he's a delusional pompous weirdo

on the other hand he still seems to be quite a genius by his blog.

Now this is quite interesting. I think a licensed game is actually a great way for Silicon Knights to rebuild their reputation. It's also a chance for them to be reintroduced to Nintendo platforms, though we still have to see if that will be the case.

Kytim89October 07, 2010

Judging by those photos it seems that Dyack might have his hands too full to do any game development.  ;D

Hmm... Eternal Darkness II: Sanity's Redemption would be the easiest way for Silicon Knights to be reintroduced to Nintendo platforms. It's probably the only game Nintendo fans would welcome them back with open arms. After that, they can try something new, even if it's a licensed game. Wii owners are pretty apprehensive about supporting games built specifically for the Wii so I don't know how well something a likely multiplayer game such as X-Men: Destiny will fair.

They should do a sequel to Eternal Darkness for the 3DS. Think about how awesome it would be to have the Sanity Effects appearing right in front of your face out of nowhere, like a bug flying around or a fake reflection of someone holding a knife or something like that. It could be epic as a motherfucker.

I can definitely get behind this.  So psyched.

I still need to give Too Human a run, seeing as it can be had for so cheap now.

I had fun with Too Human. It's not a great game, but it's far from horrible.

@Brandogg:  Get on the phone with Hideki Konno, now!

I just finished Power-Up, the Chris Kohler book about Japanese video games, and it ends with a chapter on the merging of Eastern philosophy with Western developers, with Silicon Knights as one of the examples.  I loved Eternal Darkness, but sadly came to discover it well after it was for sale new on the shelves.  I have no interest in an X-Men game, none, but I'm glad SK has work.  Hopefully they and Next-Level (working on Ghost Recon) will cash their checks and go back to making games I'm interested in.  But that's just me being selfish.

Keep the dream (team) alive, everyone...  I still want to see Raven Blade by Retro Studios!  That demo blew my mind back in 2001.

mmmmBack to this title....

This has the chance to be pretty awesome. I hope it's not just a Infamous/KOTOR be good or be bad kind of choosing. Maybe a middle ground story line as well, that will allow you to be a loner, that's not affiliated with any faction. And of course many options in the beginning to allow you choose what type of powers you are to develop.

Yes, City of Heroes/Villains already allows something like this but it would be great to receive that type of treatment on the console.

I do wonder how in-depth ANY choices would be developed for a Wii edition, aaaaand if it will be worth it by the time this title surfaces....

Spak-SpangOctober 09, 2010

I think this could be cool.

The X-men team RPGs were pretty cool, but I felt were poorly executed.  I think this game can be very cool if it puts you in an open world with a pretty deep story and you only play 1 character.

It is fairly easy to construct a great X-men story that effects both the Brotherhood and X-men similarly and then have the player be a mutant that choices his fate.

SK is a joke in my mind.
