The twin behemoths have sold a combined 19 million copies in North America.
According to sales data provided to IGN by the NPD Group, Wii Play and Wii Fit are two of the top three best-selling games in North America this decade. Wii Play has sold 11.1 million copies since launching in February 2007, and Wii Fit has sold 7.9 million copies since this past April. Both titles have followed Nintendo's strategy of bundling hardware along with their games. Currently in the number two position is 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, with 8.25 million copies sold.
"As your numbers show, with almost eight million sold life to date and a place in the Top 10 every month since it's launched, it's pretty clear that consumers love this game," says Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo's Vice President of Sales and Marketing, of Wii Fit. "The appeal of Wii Fit is so broad and its ability to keep attracting new users every month has really played out time and time again."
Nintendo hopes to continue this success with Wii Fit Plus, which just launched in North America last week. Dunaway explains, "There's certainly an opportunity there. That being said, we think Wii Fit Plus really expands upon the marketplace. And the new enhancements that come with Wii Fit Plus are going to make it appeal to an even broader audience."
