Resident Evil Series Might See a Re-Imagining

The horror-survival epic could re-invent itself in the next game in the series.

In a panel at the San Diego Comic- Con, Capcom Producer Jun Takeuchi mentioned that he would like to see the Resident Evil series re-imagined in the next generation of the franchise when asked if the series would see a drastic change after the release of Darkside Chronicles on the Wii. Takeuchi further elaborated that "[Kawata and I] are playing blackjack to see who has the responsibility of next episode of series,” suggesting that the series might see a different producer.

In 2005, Resident Evil 4 was released and featured a game engine different from previous Resident Evil titles as well as a setting unique to this title. This garnered critical acclaim from the industry and the game received several “Game of the Year” awards. Resident Evil 4 was later ported to the Wii and featured enhanced controls that made it the definitive version of the game. Resident Evil 5 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 was upgraded once more with the addition of a second character.

Talkback

Thank God. RE5 is not the sequel this series needed.

StogiJuly 27, 2009

No doubt. We need ghosts. GHOSTS I SAY!

EasyCureJuly 27, 2009

They should totally do a Resident Evil meets Silent Hill and have a re-imagined (ie. Bouncey) Claire and Jill double team Pyramid Head.

ShyGuyJuly 27, 2009

Jonny is right. The series seems to have went like thus:

Resident Evil 1-Veronica: Survival Horror
Resident Evil 4: Action Horror
Resident Evil 5: Just Action

Right now I consider Left 4 Dead the spiritual successor to the Resident Evil franchise.

To be fair RE4 was a reimagining of the series.

broodwarsJuly 27, 2009

Hopefullly this "re-imagining" will keep the RE4-style control, but add in the ability to shoot while moving (seriously, Dead Space proved you could still have a scary experience while having something resembling real human movement) and reinsert the horror aspect that the series began to shed with RE4 and completely dropped in RE5.  Hopefully this is just a "re-imagining" of the style of the game, not a "reboot" of the series as IGN decided to report it (which could indicate a reboot of the entire RE canon in a very Capcom-ish fashion).

Is re-imagining another way of saying "exclusive to PS3" or "on-rails"?  The source is very very vague.

NinGurl69 *hugglesJuly 27, 2009

Oh my, new possibilities have arisen:

"RE the FPS"

"RE the DLC-driven series of Episodic gameplay chapters for $24.99USD per 3 hours of new gameplay"

I truly know what Capcom's thinking.

They are saying that its very likely that when the next game starts production it will have a new producer, which means the game might be different from earlier games.

You're right. And RE5 was a de-imagining of the series.

You do realize, of course, that you are now contractually obligated to rip that game to shreds on RFN for your New Business to the utter glee of us all (especially those of us who've actually played it), right?  ;)

ShyGuyJuly 28, 2009

Rip it Jonny! R I P  I T

PlugabugzJuly 28, 2009

I agree with this. I would only shed some concern if they said Zack & Wiki needed re-imagining.

Ian SaneJuly 28, 2009

Rather shocking that they would re-imagine the series yet again so soon.  The original formula lasted for five games.  Even if you see RE5 as a mistep it's clearly going off the RE4 template and that style of gameplay isn't necessarily done.

I applaud Capcom for trying to keep things fresh but I know they like their sequels and they're going to keep Resident Evil going as long as they can.  So why not hold off a bit on a re-imagining and "save" it for when you really need it?

KDR_11kJuly 28, 2009

Maybe they want to re-imagine it into a survival horror again without making it horrible to control?

NinGurl69 *hugglesJuly 28, 2009

RE4 with lots of hallways?

He said WITHOUT making it hard to control.

NinGurl69 *hugglesJuly 28, 2009

RE1 with good controls is basically Killer7.  Killer7 with New Play Controls is basically RE4 Wii Edition.

mac<censored>July 28, 2009

"Re-imagine" damn well better mean "not on rails"...

BwrJim!July 29, 2009

well I remember the possession part about r4 before they scrapped it.

Now, RE6 could be compleltly reimagined with dragons lair gameplay!

ShyGuyJuly 29, 2009

I like to reimagine Umbrella Chronicles with character control.

I'm only caring about RE: On-Rails Sequal (DC) because it covers my favorite RE games (being 2, CV and maybe 4 but I don't know if it's confirmed or not) and my favorite characters. Since Shinji Mikami left, and RE5, Capcom will be burying the series like they did Viewtiful Joe.

We're all better off waiting to see what Mikami whips up at Platnium.

Maybe he'll get to make a game based on the supernatural RE4 version they had working.

PeachylalaJuly 30, 2009

Yes, but I'm worried it won't sell because we non-casuals are failing at our job to buy the damn games.

I always thought that incarnation of RE4 was awesome, so it'd definitely be cool to see it pop up again.  It was like RE and Silent Hill did a crossover game (how awesome would that be, by the way).
