Revolution Name Announced!

The real name for Nintendo's next console is...

The new name for the console previously known as Revolution is "Wii". Pronounced "we", the name was chosen for being easily memorised, pronounceable by people all around the world, and not needing abbreviation.

According to Game Informer's interview with Matt Atwood, Public Relations Manager for Nintendo of America (NOA), the name was chosen by a committee which included employees of both NOA and Nintendo Co. Ltd. in Japan. Atwood also reiterates that the system will be launching in the fourth quarter of this year: "The system comes at the end of 2006 and we’re pretty confident and comfortable."

The mysterious Nintendo statement and logo are below. Expect to find out more as E3 creeps ever closer.

Wii

Introducing … Wii.

As in “we."

While the code-name “Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like “we," which emphasizes this console is for everyone.

Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive “ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.

Because, it’s really not about you or me.

It’s about Wii.

And together, Wii will change everything.

WTF!!!?

This name stinks like wee.

EDIT: Nah, it's alright, just a little weird.

Bill AurionApril 27, 2006

"Because, it’s really not about you or me.
It’s about Wii.

This truly is a brilliant marketing line...

hudsonhawkApril 27, 2006

More like, Whaa?

Ian SaneApril 27, 2006

What a f*cking stupid name. I guess it was between this and Pu.

joeposhApril 27, 2006

Well it could be worse... but I was really hoping they would stick with the "Revolution" code name. It just had a certian ring to it and made it clear that Nintendo was intent on changing the face of gaming.

On the plus side, maybe this new name indicates an increased focus on community interaction in gaming?

ShyGuyApril 27, 2006

I don't care, I am going to call it the revolution still.

UltimatePartyBearApril 27, 2006

Yay! A name lots of people will hate so I can say I like it and feel counterculture and superior!

Seriously, though. I see the cleverness. It takes a little too much effort to explain the cleverness, though. Marketingwise, a simple "cool" name is probably easier to work with. This is nothing like what I expected.

Jiggy37April 27, 2006

This is possibly the stupidest Nintendo decision in their history. It's almost like they decided that the DS was having too much success for comfort and they wanted to stay carefully behind Sony in marketshare.

Ugh. Revolution was infinitely better. I'll just hope that massive fan outrage in English-speaking countries convinces them to change their minds before they start producing the system.

BigJimApril 27, 2006

My first thought was World War II. Not a good first impression.

It looks like it's pronounced "Why" and that is my feeling exactly.

Revolution was perfect for what they wanted to accomplish with the system.

mantidorApril 27, 2006

Its disgusting

ToruresuApril 27, 2006

Wii?

The jokes write themselves!!!

I also miss my Ultra 64 system...

PIACApril 27, 2006

So Nintendo is using it's consoles as some kind of tax sink hole now? That would make sense.

Nintendo Wii.
::Earth laughs::

CalibanApril 27, 2006

Nice joke guys, I almost had a heart attack there.

ShyGuyApril 27, 2006

Has anyone started a grassroots petition to change the name yet?

CalibanApril 27, 2006

I still think it's a joke! I checked Nintendo's site and voila: http://revolution.nintendo.com/ . Now, why would they call it Wii and their site still be called revolution.

I even got to see a vid of Wii but now it's not even loading. I don't mind the name btw, I actually find it quite funny and quirky good.

MarioApril 27, 2006

Wii.

Well, if they plan on selling 1 billion systems, and making this system a household term around the globe, then this will be effective, however it could be it's own barrier in reaching that success. Unless there's something really huge shown at E3 that makes everyone have to have a Rev... er... Wii, regardless, then everything will be fine. However, the public perception in English speaking markets is going to be an uphill battle, just when we thought everything was going right.

This new name makes "Revolution" seem too uptight and serious. I like the style of the new name, the simplicity and the fact it's not generic, but not the name they chose to fit that.

Wii...............

If the new Pikmin is called Pikmin Thwii, it'll be all worth it

CalibanApril 27, 2006

IGN forums have exploded I hope, this forum has double the users it usually has logged on and it was 30 users last I checked.

archioverloadApril 27, 2006

Nooooooooooooooooooooo

Yeah, that fact that PlayStation has had to be abbreviated has just KILLED IT worldwide!

Donutt007April 27, 2006

OK, maybe this is looking to far into it but it says
" Introducing … Wii.

As in “we."

While the code-name “Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. "

Now, that may not mean that they are going to change the name of the console....it could be something else. Even on their website all it says is revolution has a new name...does that mean that the name is changed or that Wii is a new revolution....of course then I read it more and it says "wii as a name and a console" and get bummed out again. But the fact that on their website it still says revolution just gives me too much hope...maybe I should just wait til E3...sigh.

archioverloadApril 27, 2006

Also, it could also read like "W-2" or "W-i-i".

This is just massively confusing. Esp. American nongamers, who is allegedly the target market for this.

Stupid thing reminds me of the "Knights of Ni."

ShyGuyApril 27, 2006

Will we get acronym games like Dawn of Sorrow? Castlevania: Werewolves Icky Icky

CapApril 27, 2006

i'm with everyone else, "we" seem to all agree the name sucks.

Wii is definitely the new name of the console. It's not some marketing double-talk to mean the name of the Virtual Console service or the controller or anything like that. Revolution is now called Wii.

Donutt007April 27, 2006

HA...this didn't take very long
TrialClix

BlackNMild2k1April 27, 2006

I posted this idea in the Funhouse, but I'll repeat it here just for the hell of it.

I suggest a new forum filter, so that everytime someone uses the word "we" it will automatically be replaced witht the name "Wii".

It will be a little annoying at first, but you will get more annoyed by it later!!

trip1eXApril 27, 2006

I kind of liked 'Revolution,' but that was probably too common of a word for them to use for their console.

Wii is pretty good. The spelling looks 'exotic.' It can be made fun of pretty easy too, but I think it will grow on me.

PlugabugzApril 27, 2006

They've literally gone down the totally unusuall naming scheme that a certain iPod did cough cough.

thame^April 27, 2006

Apple only uses a single lowercase 'i' in its products' names. That makes Nintendo twice as good as Apple, imagine that!

Nintendo equals more gooder

Funny how the controller kinda looks like an iPod shuffle, and the whole system as the sleek Apple look...wouldn't that be crazy is Steve Jobs had his hands in Nintendo...

BlackNMild2k1April 27, 2006

face-icon-small-music.gifWii Are The Champions!!face-icon-small-music.gif

Honestly I liked the name Revolution right from the moment I heard it, but maybe this one will grow on me over time.

I'm sure the French will like it..."Ah, wii wii!" or "Mais wii!"

Terrible name, but I can see the logic behind it:

1) Simple
2) Communicates the fact that it's a system designed around user interaction (looks like 2 people in the name, also the play on words with wii/we)
3) Different from the name of any other console ever made, like Wii is different from everything else out there
4) Translates across all languages, like they want their console to do

Still, all of this logic doesn't stop it from not sounding cool in the slightest.

18 DaysApril 27, 2006

Nah.
Nah.

MaryJaneApril 27, 2006

I love the way the name looks. I hate the way it sounds. What a dilemma.

I'd prefer why-e, we is just so i dunno. When you say it together, the Nintedo Wii. sounds like Nintendo-y, or I LOVE HALO 2. Why not stick with Revolution.

Or they want simple? How about the Nintendo 1. or Nintendo Im (pronounced like him i don't know i can't get too excited telling all my friends who think that Nintendo is for kids.

hey guess what guys (all 20+ (we got one youngin) I just got the Nintendo Weeeeeee! first question: 1. why are you saying weeee? is it that much fun? response: no that the name. 2. are you a homo? response: since the last time i checked i was still straight. 3. when does the ps3 come out? response: f u

KnoxxvilleApril 27, 2006

Now THIS is somehing! This is like an anime when somebody is supposed to say something profound, yet instead says something 'tarded, and a frame or two later everyone else is in some contorted position, usually on the floor, looking like they all got punched in the face!

....I have a stomach ache.....WHY Nintendo, WHYYYYYYY?!?

This cannot be......AARGH!!!

NWApril 27, 2006

It could also be called "The NW" D:

vuduApril 27, 2006

It needs a second syllable (at least) in order to sound right.

ZachApril 27, 2006

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooo

What is up, this really shows that they are not in touch with the west. I will still buy it, but what casual gamer is going to get over the tiku tiku tiku! image when its called the Wii??

Another three letter name that I think would probably sell better is "Nintendo WTF" It is an appreviation, thus making it not "simple" but it would probably sell better.

Smash_BrotherApril 27, 2006

There are no words...

There just AREN'T any F*CKING words...

capamericaApril 27, 2006

Oh Dear God What have they Done!
They have been doing so much to get rid of their tiku tiku tiku! image and they they toss this name on the Revolution.

I think every Nintendo fan out there needs to email Nintendo and ask what the f*ck are they thinking and that they need to change the name back to Revolution or to something less childish.

All I can think of when I see that name is a baby babbleing.

ryanincApril 27, 2006

Oh geeze...I can totally see the jokes starting...

"So I was playing my Wii this weekend..."
"You guys gotta try the new game I got on my Wii!"

...right. This totally can't be good. :-)

ZachApril 27, 2006

I at least hope NOA realizes how horrible the name is. I wouldnt be surprised if they didnt, but if they did, would they try to change it here?

I just cant imagine Reggie at E3 talking about the Nintendo Wii.

MarioApril 27, 2006

It's Celda all over again!

Hostile CreationApril 27, 2006

Hahahahahaha.

Internet exploding with anger. "This name can only make my already miniscule penis seem smaller! Hate U Nintendo!"
I'm not sure what to think about it. I do know that I'm feeling genuine hatred for the industry and every gamer out there, because why the f*ck are you going to take something so seriously. Games aren't even about having fun any more, and these reactions manifest that fact.

I think it's ridiculous, but I like it.

capamericaApril 27, 2006

This is all I see when I hear that name
19096187.jpg

ssj4_androidApril 27, 2006

Celda all over again? At least they didn't call it Wind Wanker. Seriously, did some Japanese people come up with this without even asking someone who lives in America?

pyrokamileonApril 27, 2006

hey I've got a good idea! someone should write nintendo and tell them that instead of Wii it should be Wiiwii! that way it'll sound good in french, have at least two syllables, still be simple and instead of looking like you got two people in the name it looks like four!
you thought telling someone that they should totally come by and check your new Wii sounded kinda fun? well it'll sound even better if it were dubbed Wiiwii instead of dumb ol' simple three lettered Wii!
SERIOUSLY THOUGH NO ONE BETTER EVEN CONSIDER WRITING THEM THAT... they might like the idea

I still think this is a joke, I mean I know it's way past April Fools day but then again planetgamecube never did come through with a good joke, did they...

RizeDavid Trammell, Staff AlumnusApril 27, 2006

Don't question the power of Reggie. When he says "Wii", nations will tremble.

couchmonkeyApril 27, 2006

I tend to agree with Hostile Creation. The name is of no importance. When you see the graphics, you will say "Wii!"

Edit: This post is lacking in...meaning. The name is definitely NOT cool, but remember guys, Nintendo is genuinely attempting to attract a totally different crowd than Sony or Microsoft. That crowd is not going to care if the name sounds cool. If you think Nintendo's plan is stupid, that's fine, but you have to admit that in the context of that plan, having an uncool sounding name doesn't matter.

mrjack203April 27, 2006

Hearing that the Revolution is truly now called the Wii, is like someone just told me my dog got ran over by a car.

Nintendo, do you really want to succeed in this market? I mean you had everything going for you and out of nowhere you come up with Wii and throw away the coolest name EVER for a console. I just don't get it...

KnowsNothingApril 27, 2006

I wouldn't have loved to see Iwata announce the name at E3 just to see the immediate reaction. You know, snickering, then confusion, followed by laughing, and then some sobbing.

So yeah, pretty retarded name.

Although I agree with mario, after the original BUH? going through my brain, I though "Well now Revolution seems so boring and uptight." I don't think any name can please me now =D

NinGurl69 *hugglesApril 27, 2006

AHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAAH

Wii = Y = WHY THE FOKK #$^$#@%#%&^*(^%@#

Also,

Wii = Dubaya 2. Proof that NINTENDO STRATEGERY Wiins

Wii = name thingy that breaks all those other startup Rev website names

Wii = !!M = MUTHER F%#^%#$%@%@!#

GameBoy Advance successor to be named "P-Wii" (portable)

www.planetwii.com = www.planetds.com = Planet Dead Systems

Wii = made of fail and internet

Frankly, it's pleasant to look at, but not exactly seamless for use in speaking. "WE games" "WE controller" "WE website" "Nintendo WE"

I agree "WTF" works better.

~~~~~
I think I understand now. The purpose is to just be a product name/code. Nintendo wanted to make the name so garbage-off-the-wall, that we'll all resort to saying "Nintendo" again, like how we just drop the "Entertainment System" when we refer to the NES.
Nintendo is definitely catering to the "non-crowd" aka the "non-consumer" aka no one's gonna buy it for sure.
GLAD THIS BOMB WASN'T DROPPED AT GDC
RobageejamminApril 27, 2006
....................
I seriously thought this was a joke until i had checked every single gaming site anywhere.....
Wii....
are you sure this isnt a joint worldwide late april fools joke???? Ive given it a minute to sink in....and nothing....nothing like when i gave the controller a minute to sink in...with that I came to my senses....but....Wii? Seriously someone has to change this NOW before it gets any further.
Tomorrow, Reggie will be at the Nintendo World Store signing autographs. I urge everyone, including myself, in the New York area to hunt him down and ask him....why?...or should i say...Wii?
Ill see you there...
Wii? no...just no....
KnowsNothingApril 27, 2006
Actually, if we get something like "Resident Evil Wii" it'll be all worth it.
Michael8983April 27, 2006
I could see "wii" being more beneficial than "revolution" over time.
"revolution" sounds like too much of a gamer name while "wii" sounds and looks like something Apple would come up with. It's simple, it's to the point, it will attract a wider audience.
It might not be as cool but Nintendo is out to prove that the "cool" factor doesn't have to be the deciding factor.
wanderingApril 27, 2006
I am always amazed at Nintendo's ability to turn people off of their systems. I knew people who swore off the cube when they saw celda, and I'm sure people will do the same here.
Not that I want Nintendo to stop, mind you. The fact that they continue to make crazy decisions in the face of reason is what I love about them. This is the company that hired Miyamoto for no good reason, other than the fact that he seemed creative. Doing crazy sh*t is their lifeblood, and trying to convince them to stop is like trying to convince Don Quixote that the windmills aren't giants.
NinGurl69 *hugglesApril 27, 2006
I don't like it on the simple fact it's not fit for casual speaking.
c'mon, it virtually has no consanants.
KnowsNothingApril 27, 2006
I've changed my mind, Wii is the greatest name ever.
NinGurl69 *hugglesApril 27, 2006
"Let's play Metroid Prime 3 for Wii"
"For who?"
"Wii"
"Us?"
"No"
"WTF ARE YOU SAYING"
=DDDDDDDDDDD
couchmonkeyApril 27, 2006
What do you want to bet Nintendo's name-brains were got tired of thinking and just took the "f" out of Nintendo WiFi?
The name is quickly growing on me, but for the record I agree that it's a totally horrible name if you're trying to attract the typical gamer.
decoymanApril 27, 2006
So does this mean that instead of the "Revmote," now we have the "Wemote"?
Speech impediment NOOOoooooo
Yeah, choosing the system's name to be synonymous with an English pronoun is just a brilliant move. There is basically no way for English speakers to have a conversation about the Wii without confusion.
Nosferat2April 27, 2006
This is taken from my post on Revolution Report:
Its obvious to me now that everyone at Nintendo are a bunch of Japanese queeers. No way would a striaght american come up with a name like Wii. Im sorry but 20 years of loyalty shall now cease. i will buy( maybe rent one if i can) a Revolution only to Play Metriod Prime 3. Then i will return the Rev back to the store and never look at Nintendo again.
As soon as revolution report changes its name to Wiireport i will no longer be a memebr here.
First no HD, then underpowering it, and now a sissy azz name. Jesus. its amazing how one company can screw something that had so much potential up.
Im outta here,
When this site becomes wiiplanet or planetwii, im outta here too. Nintendo is just a big azz joke now. Mark my words, all the love the Rev has been getting from Media and magazines will stop after this announcement. Wait and see.
Ugh. I feel sick. I'll still buy it, and I'll still love it, but seriously, Revolution... that's a name. I really hope this is all just some big joke.
Sir_StabbalotApril 27, 2006
Why. Just why. The name "Revolution" was 100% accepted. It sounded badass.
But now. "Wii"? There goes ANY CHANCE of main stream acceptance. "Hey guys, wanna play on my Wii?" Nintendo had all the right ideas, but then they do this. Why?
I hope this is a joke...
davidctaylorApril 27, 2006
Ugh. The main problem is its confusing pronunciation. Its like that stupid VW SUV. Toureg. If you have to have a whole marketing campaign to explain our to pronounce something, you MIGHT should've considered a simpler name. :-(
RickPowersRick Powers, Staff AlumnusApril 27, 2006
I can't even begin to explain how disappointed I am in the final name selection for what was formerly the Nintendo Revolution.
Wii?
Seriously, explain all the rationale behind the choice all you want, but that name is just a terrible, terrible fit for the American market. I can only assume that the name was picked by NCL and that NOA had nothing to do with it.
I'm absolutely stunned, shocked, and dumbfounded.
Official prediction: Gamers everywhere will go back to saying "I'm playing Nintendo." In that light, maybe this is a good move. But only in that light. In every other light, this is bowling-shoe ugly.
TMWApril 27, 2006
I dunno...aside from the words similarity to urination, I kinda like it. It looks good. Its simple. I like the play on the pronoun, and the byline on their press release was just awesome.
Still. Urination. Not good.
hudsonhawkApril 27, 2006
What happened to all the comments that were in here?
Very good question. I made some updates to the article to add more information, and then I noticed that all the Talkback replies had disappeared. It must be a bug in the system that automatically posts and updates Talkback threads. I have already reported it to our technical guys. My apologies to everyone who posted in this thread earlier -- feel free to re-post your bitching about the name. I don't want anyone to think this was some kind of censorship; I assure you it is a technical problem and nothing else!
Awful name, it's like they thought that the DS was doing too well for comfort and decided they needed to assure that in the home console realm they'd stay firmly behind Sony.
face-icon-small-frown.gif
Edit: Of course I'll still buy it, but only because I can't say no to SSB, Pokemon, and the virtual console. If those three things were taken out of the picture, I would have considered not buying any of the three next-gen home consoles and going portable-only.
Horrible choice. Fatal mistake.
I guess Ian is right, Nintendo refuses to actually do things right. They had to go and shoot their faces off.
Hostile CreationApril 27, 2006
I'm not sure what to think about it. I'm defending it, since there's overwhelming whining going on, and I always have to argue against overwhelming whining because I hate it more than anything, but I'm not sure.
I like the name. I think it's fun, and kind of silly, and unique. My friends and I will definitely have fun messing around with the name. If you can have fun with a game console's name, you're on the right track, I'd say.
But there's an obviously negative feeling overall. Which I think is ridiculous, get over your "cool" video games and delusions of grandeur and realize you're a bunch of nerds who wouldn't know "cool" if it went down on you. But still, gotta take that into account, because as unfortunate as it is, these are the people who will be buying it.
EpitaphApril 27, 2006
The one aspect I really like about the name its look, it has a very appealing look to it. Its a modern look, kind of a newage branding.
Its only when you say it that it really just doesnt work. Quite frankly I thnk I will call it w2, W2 doesnt seem to bad. But in terms of how it looks and how the flash animation was pulled off its not too bad.
Avinash_TyagiApril 27, 2006
Don't you mean Wii're
Add a few lines to
WII
and you get
WTF
And that about sums up my thoughts on it.
People may compare this to the initials reactions to the controller, but it's not the same. For me, the controller idea was redeemed when they showed the video of ideas for games based around it (and hopefully the real games will complete the redemption). In this case, there really isn't anything to redeem it. If they at least changed the logo to better portray what the i's represent (controllers, people, etc) then that would help (because I doubt most people are going to figure that out on their own), but that still doesn't change the fact that it sounds dumb.
I know they warned that the name would change, but I don't really understand it... they had such a powerful force going behind their codename, there really wasn't a good reason to change it.
"Wii" doesn't seem "fresh," it seems like the old Nintendo "you will like it because we say you will."
It's also really close to "Wifi," sure to cause all sorts of typo problems...
Also, it sounds really similar to Intel's VIIV (pronouced with a long i sound) initiative, which has not only already flopped, but doesn't even have the same pronunciation despite the two i's...
"By letting the gaming community vent now about the name, they will be less distracted as launch titles for the system are announced and initial reports about what it's like to play the games begin to come in." - Perrin Kaplan
Seriously, if they were expecting that everyone would think it was horrible, then why did they go with it?
Too bad...when the Wiivolution comes, you'll be left behind. face-icon-small-frown.gif
Edit: Having seen the video myself, I have a feeling Nintendo's marketing departments are probably strewn with concepts using the i's as people (and controllers). People who think Nintendo hasn't thought this out better think again. And if you think that they're going to change the name due to gamer pressure...think again twice.
Horrible. Absolutely horrible. At first glance, I thought it was supposed to be pronounced as the Nintendo "Why?" (as in, Why Bother). But the Nintendo Wee? That's even worse.
I would say this is possibly the worst decision Nintendo has ever made. Worse than carts. Worse than the purple lunchbox Cube design. It doesn't even fit the appearance of the system (at least "StarCube" matched the overall "gayness" of the Cube's design, and then "GameCube" improved on it).
I think Nintendo's only hope right now is to call it the "WII" or the "W2".
Yes, I have. That's how I came up with that point. People aren't going to see the video when they see the logo, they're just going to see 3 letters.
Incidentally, the use of i's is similar to the logo redesign of my old ISP (that I worked for) top_logo.gif
We hated that one too, and the designer also had to explain what it meant.
Well, I believe Nintendo is going to use variations on the i's all the time to make it clear. I'll even go so far as to predict that every telivision spot will involve animated i's, which should make the concept pretty clear. (Edit - see: Pixar lamp) It's a name and a logo in one. Maybe I'm nuts though.
nemo_83April 27, 2006
I have an idea, how about the media and consumers all ignore what Nintendo has done and continue to refer to the system as Revolution until they change it back.
slackerApril 27, 2006
Wii? Why? This is a horrible name. It sounds like crap. Couldn't they just keep it as Revolution? There's more marketing material in that name than Wii. Once again, Nintendo shoot themselves in the foot. They should have two brands, one for Japan, the other for the rest of the world. WTF is a Wii!!! This is ridiculous. I don't want to go to the store to ask about a game for the Wii. It doesn't sound right.
wanderingApril 27, 2006
Wow, the name is so bad, it has the power to make Rick Powers post.
You know, if honed properly, I think this power of Wii could be an effective weapon. Like the world's funniest joke the allies used to defeat the Germans.
couchmonkeyApril 27, 2006
Looks like planetwii.com is already owned. I wonder if someone just snapped it up, or if that's the reason planetgamecube isn't going with it?
(Edit: wiipedia is taken, predictably, and Nintendo itself seems to own wiiworld.com)
Michael8983April 27, 2006
I think they went with the name because it's something they can truly call their own.
There have been revolutions in the past, but this is the very first wii.
It may seem odd at the moment but who would have thought ten years ago we'd someday be going around talking about "Google-ing" each other and playing with our "iPods".
Of course it will really all come down to the marketting.
The wii movie on Nintendo's site is awesome. It's sleek and cool - not at all childish. Like an Apple commercial but with a lttle Nintendo flare added. If Nintendo can get that and other ads like it out to the mainstream and get them all talking about the "wii" - it could set the seeds for a true revolution.
ruby_onixApril 27, 2006
Game Informer has an interesting interview regarding the new name. Their last question wins:
GI: (laughs) The name Wii makes me think of peeing! You said you have to hold the DS like a book for Brain Age, I hate to know how I’m supposed to hold the Wii controller.
steveyApril 27, 2006
why before e3? maybe a better name instore but it still worst then revolution so this will make it look better... Oh god please!
Ian SaneApril 27, 2006
I'm thinking that maybe if it wasn't just one syllable it would work better. What if they went with something like WiiMachine? Do you think iPod would catch on if it was just i? Ignoring the pee issue there's the issue with "we" mangling up our speech. But if it's WiiMachine or WiiTube or WiiPad or WiiBot or something like that it's more comfortable to say as a noun. And then it sounds more like it's "we" instead of "wee". They can use the same marketing "Wii will rock you" strategy as well.
Jin-XApril 27, 2006
I've come to this forum for a long time but never post, but my god this is horrible, and before people say they like it or they'll still buy it (of course we'll still buy it), this isn't about us, they could name it the rainbow and we'd still buy it, this is about everybody else, the casuals, and in the West, image is everything and having such a horrible name is going to be a major problem with a lot people knocking it with jokes and not even giving it a chance.
Who didn't like Revolution? It was perfect, in Japan it's not going to matter and that's why I bet this was NCL's doing. I hope NOA was/is fighting this and they just broke it before E3 to show NCL how unbelievably stupid this is. They can call this in Japan, but here it needs to stay the Revolution.
Ian SaneApril 27, 2006
That Game Informer interview was like that NASA Q&A on the Simpsons where they annouced that Homer or Barney were going into space. "No more questions on whether this is a joke."
It's also kind of like the Seinfeld episode where Jerry is on the Today Show and is trying to just keep on topic and the interviewer keeps bringing up his puffy shirt.
Maybe if every interviewer spends the whole time making fun of the name Nintendo will get a clue.
RickPowersRick Powers, Staff AlumnusApril 27, 2006
Matt and I have had some chats while he was still at Capcom, and seeing him tap-dance around the issue must have been difficult for him, because he's always been a pretty straight shooter.
Note the following quote from the interview ...
"Once you touch the Revolution, this will make more sense."
He didn't say Wii ... because he KNEW what the response would be. When you have to dance around and watch your wording, you've made a terrible decision.
ruby_onixApril 27, 2006
Wow! Look at that ad!
All right, this place must be hot. They don't need a big ad, or even correct spelling.
ArtimusApril 27, 2006
I detest the iPod, Yahoo and Google comparison. Why? It's absolutely irrelevant.
Pod = word
Google = variant of googol, which suits a search enginge perfectly
Yahoo = word
Wii is not a word. Pod, Google and Yahoo are not synonyms for small, pee and penis. Nintendo knows this is bad and they know it's a mistake. SO WHY ARE THEY DOING IT?
Ugh, months of building good news and it all falls apart two weeks before E3. UGH. I hate Nintendo for this, HATE them.
And I have a suggestion for a new site name: PlanetPS360.
EDIT: Not to mention Amazon and Virgin are ALSO words. And Napster sounds like Rapster and, again, doesn't mean piss.
Ian SaneApril 27, 2006
"Note the following quote from the interview ...
I didn't even notice that. That's hilarious.
I can always tell when a Nintendo rep obviously doesn't like what he's talking about. The wording is usually more stiff. You can tell they're spouting off what their boss told them to. There's a lot of canned answers and repetition. Case in point when they were talking about the horrible DS launch lineup the vibe those interviews gave off is the same vibe I get for this one. But when a rep is talking about Twilight Princess or their new Wi-Fi strategy it seems more legitimate. The answers seem more casual and there's more enthusiasm. It is always easier to talk about something you yourself are interested in. As a wrestling fan it has become obvious to me when someone actually likes what they're talking about and when someone is being a shill. face-icon-small-wink.gif
I dislike the name. It sounds like they took the f out of wifi and just went with that. For a company that wants to promote themselves to non-gamers and casual gamers, using a name that would be better used for a cartoon character seems to be the wrong choice. I've seen some "at least it's more original than XBox or PS3!" comments around the net, but at least those names didn't sound so...not cool.
There's also the "IT'S JUST A NAME!" crowd. Of course it's just a name, and a name means everything in the market. You're going to buy the Wii because you already know how cool it's going to be. The non-gamers/casual gamers will look at the name and not know what to think. I'm really hoping that they'll switch it back to the Revolution, or at least some other small name that isn't as out there as Wii. (There's AWESOME out there, and "wtf?" out there. In this case, it's the latter.)
Also as of now, I have dubbed the console the Lil' NW, for it is the Nintendo Wii.
The worst part is that they recognize the issue with the name. This reminds me a bit of Canadian Reform Alliance Party (C.R.A.P.). However, in their defense, they were unaware of the problem until it was too late. At least they had the balls to change thier name.
obscureownershipApril 27, 2006
But I guess that doesn't matter just so long as you look extremely manly to everyone, right?
When you say it straight out, "Nintendo Wii" doesn't sound much different from Nintendo-E, actually.
"We are the knights who play Wii"...heh heh...
Now maybe it's because I wasted my work day reading all the angry responses on revolutionreport.com (I much prefer here, but I can't access it at work...stupid WebSense) that I'm tired of all the hating and am actually accepting the name. (Not like we have a choice.)
In comparison, "PlayStation" is childish (come on, it's a station for play, think about it, say it like two words over and over and you'll agree) and "Xbox" is either something sexual or so "X-treme" that it's such a parody of itself. If you think "wee" is sexual you're probably a six-year-old. "Hee hee, he's playing with his Wii!" Yeah, shut up.
Yeah, Wii wouldn't have been a name I'd chosen myself. I'm sure everyone got used to the "Revolution" but I really think all this hating is really a waste of time an energy. Go throw it into a petition, see if that makes a difference. I doubt it.
If Wii affects perception, so be it. But everyone's going to call Nintendo consoles "Nintendo" anyway and I'm sure it's still about the games and how to play them and the name of it doesn't change it.
I'm going to E3 myself in less than two weeks and I will gladly play with some Wii.
Hostile CreationApril 27, 2006
Jin-XApril 27, 2006
"But I guess that doesn't matter just so long as you look extremely manly to everyone, right?"
Yes in the US thats very important and will hurt the Revolution, because like I said, this isn't about us, wii'll get it whatever its called, but this is a big image problem that has a very good chance of hurting sales where as the name Revolution doesn't.
"nigga" is easy to remember, "fag" is even easier to remember, will you name a product like that? will you really? yes Im exagerating of course, wii isnt as bad as those, but I think you get my point
Im still trying to wrap my head around the name,
They say its universal, but I dont see that, "W" isnt exactly an universal letter or sound, at least not here, W is a foreign letter and sound hardly seen in any spanish word, maybe "K" would be better, thats an universal sound, "Kii", I like that a lot more.
After that they contradict themselves and say it stands for "we" which is an english pronoun that half the world doesnt know or use.
But the plural in the flash is interesting, "controllers", does it mean wii get two controllers? does it mean its related to the nunchaku being finally packed in with the console?
Im out of ideas, I dont know what else to think about it.
Edit:
Damn you PGC dont filter "W E" tpg.gif
Wii are here to stay
Wii are the REVOLUTION
Just look at the press release that Wiint along with the announcement and you can see how much fun Nintendo itself plans on having with the name. People will get so used to thinking of "Wii" as a replacement for "Wii" that all the juvenile pee jokes will be forgotten.
The name lacks appeal, urine jokes aside. Now add the jokes, and is a terrible name, they are inmature and stupid of course, but thats not going to fix the image the name carries.
I really need some info on games to get past this, E3 cant come soon enough!
ArtimusApril 27, 2006
No, I don't really hate Nintendo.
But love or hate this name, you have to admit it does NOT help the system in the slightest. Ugh.
And once again, this does not fit the examples they keep mentioning (Amazon, iPod, Napster) because they're modifications of other words that DO NOT SOUND LIKE WORDS FOR PENIS AND PEE. And they're two syllables. Two syllables is VERY important in a name, just look at all the major brand names: at least two syllables (and can thus be abbreviated). Such as:
Coca-Cola
Pepsi
Nike
Amazon
Google
Apple
iPod
Intel
Sony
Panasonic
Adidas
Toyota
MTV
Virgin
Napster
iTunes
ETC!
But I think what bothers me most is that they KNOW no one likes it, they KNOW no one is going to like it, and they still do it anyway. If you have to convince people your NAME is good, it's not. It's not like a controller which actually has values to it, a name just sounds. This one sounds stupid and the reaction is justified. It's a mistake and they know they're making it. But they like the name, so we're supposed to too. The conceited Nintendo appears to have returned...
SheckyApril 27, 2006
So why is revolution.nintendo.com active and wii.nintendo.com not?
GoldenPhoenixApril 27, 2006
The reaction here really proves how mainstream gamers are now days, when has a name made games good or bad? People are acting like the Nintendo Wii will suck now that it has that name, um, frankly I find that quite immature. I don't care if you like the name or not, but to judge a system's quality based on a name is idiotic. This is probaly coming from people who openly embrace the Xbox which frankly has a terrible name when you look at it from an open perspective. My personal thoughts are that the name itself SOUNDS poor, but frankly the logo design has alot of potential of having a recognizable look similar to the Ipod, Imac etc.
The name lacks appeal, urine jokes aside. Now add the jokes, and is a terrible name, they are inmature and stupid of course, but thats not going to fix the image the name carries.
I really need some info on games to get past this, E3 cant come soon enough!
I was making the point that your comparison has nothing to do with my arugement. I was arguing that, in the world or marketing, the quality of something doesn't matter, just so long as it's easy to remember. If you study marketing at all, you come to realize that even if, say, a commercial is awfully annoying, and you just want to throw something at the TV, it's still done it's job of injecting the given product into your mind.
JonLeungApril 27, 2006
ATTENTION: "PlayStation" is a stupid name.
It's a PlayStation. A play station. A station of play. It's a place where you have to be stationed at, not to game, but to play. It sounds like something you'd find in a day care or in a kindergarten class.
Man, who'd want to buy a game console called a "PlayStation"? Parents would for their little kids, that's who.
...
You see my point? Either people are just jaded when it comes to Nintendo, or silly names become normal once it's proven itself. The Wii has a lot to prove, and it will do it at E3.
I'm going to E3. I'm going to play on the Wii and its great games (which, BTW, aren't a worse experience because six-year-olds giggle and joke about the name). Direct your hate to me. Be jealous and envious of the joy I get of handling the Wii. Then you'll see that it's all about the games, and that complaining about a stupid name is only going to make it worse.
Like I said, it's not my choice of a name, but seriously, it's a name. Make all the excuses you want about first impressions and that mainstream gamers are probably going to hate on it more than you guys already do but if it delivers come E3, they can call it whatever the heck they want to and I'd buy it and you probably will too.
VelociraptorApril 27, 2006
oh and also you're all stupid
GoldenPhoenixApril 27, 2006
Jon, great points, I have to agree with you. When the smoke clears it will be accepted, I recall Gamecube getting blasted as well but people got used to it. As I stated previously, the name has a very futuristic look about it (not I said look, not sound), which has potential to distinguish itself. Gamers may have trouble saying the name, but I believe the packaging of the system will look stylish with a "cool" vibe about it, following in the footsteps of the hardware design.
PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorApril 27, 2006
Man, I go watch fireworks in Disney World for a night and I come back to this....
The first thing I thought when I read it was the Wi-Fi connection..... I dunno, it sounds silly, but a name won't make or break nintendo. If anyone out there thought that a fancy name could help change their image, they are wrong... Even if they called it the Nintendo Panty Raider, the cool kids wouldn't buy it, and I don't think Nintendo cares about the cool kids. (thankfully)
RobageejamminApril 27, 2006
I really dont think anyone here means that the actual gaming experience will be at all changed. I also think most of us can or already have gotten used to it. The fact of the matter is that the name makes no sense in the english language and will have a very poor appeal to non-"INTERNET NERDS WHO SURELY MAKE UP 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999^% OF NINTENDO'S MARKET". Of course E3 will blow us away, its just the concern that people out of the loop won't even give it a chance.
Hostile CreationApril 27, 2006
"But love or hate this name, you have to admit it does NOT help the system in the slightest. Ugh."
I dunno. I'm going to wait and see.
"Two syllables is VERY important in a name, just look at all the major brand names: at least two syllables"
So Nintendo is being different from all of their predecessors. How's that bad? It can only garner more attention.
mantidorApril 27, 2006
Being different not always guarantees success, and lets face it, Nintendo hasnt been the best in the marketing department for a very long time, its hard to put any hopes that this will do well.
I like the name. I think it's fun, and kind of silly, and unique. My friends and I will definitely have fun messing around with the name. If you can have fun with a game console's name, you're on the right track, I'd say.
But there's an obviously negative feeling overall. Which I think is ridiculous, get over your "cool" video games and delusions of grandeur and realize you're a bunch of nerds who wouldn't know "cool" if it went down on you. But still, gotta take that into account, because as unfortunate as it is, these are the people who will be buying it.
quoted for truth, you are my first ever favorite poster. congrats.
i too was like many of you dissapointed at this news. the name sounds stupid. i saw the video, i get it, but i still like it. we all have to accept it though, since theres a very slim chance of nintendo changing it (but lets hope they do hehe), but to sit there and post "nintendo is dumb i hate them, they suck etc etc" is pointless, and very "tiku tiku tiku! " of you. every single one of you 'haters' will still drool over the games they show at e3 and you know despite how dumb you think the name is you will still want it. the promise of a revolution is what you fell in love with, am i right? not the name. the promise of a new way to play games and new games in general is what got you hooked and theres no going back, no matter whether they call it Revolution, Wii, Crapcute, Sh*tbox or Snorestation. you want it, thats that.
if you dont actually buy the damn thing JUST because of the name then you people are immature and not ready for a revolution. stick to your annual sport-port and your WWII games. wait till ms and sony rip it off and make "manly" games that a juvinille insecure person as yourself can play and use a rip-off wand to masturbate in a gamethat proves you're a man to you and all your friends face-icon-small-smile.gif
wii will grow on you, i can see the adds now "hold on for the ride....Wiii (as in wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee)" lol
grow up guys, all that matters is the games that they make. i wouldnt mind for an n64 type era again. all games by the big N are astounding and third party support is whatever...i relaly couldnt care less. all the games i play the most are the first party ones anyway. as long as the diehard nintendo fans give em the money they need and deserve they'll be back to deliver another great system and hopefully get it right and give it a DECENT NAME. maybe thats just me, im just pissed at all the ranting.
by the wya, the name already grew on me. wii ISNT that bad, its different and the concept is cool. maybe they should do some sort of holographic logo where from one point of view its the W with the ii but another is the WW with the two controllers, or another one where the ii's sprout little arms so you can see them as people.
RocketDarknessApril 27, 2006
Wii will/ Wii will/ rock you.
Seriously, THIS is a name that will stick in everyone's minds. 1 syllable. Easy to remember. Distinctive spelling. People are talking about it. A lot. It's spreading already. And this doesn't even include the inevitable advertising.
PS: In Japanese, it's most likely going to be spelled in katakana, since they're going for the sound more than a specific meaning.
The rev isnt doomed, but it will be succesful despite the name, not because. What will sell it will be the concept, the awesome remote and the sure-to-come awesome games, and even if they name it "Wii" or"rev" or "n5" the concept will make people turn their heads and try it, not the name.
I have to agree with Ian with this one, this name is nintendo being arrogant, "we can name it whatever the hell we want and people will buy it", what irks me a little is that some of you are fine with Nintendo being like that, because I f!cking hate arrogance, even if justified.
I noticed it. Btw, didn't Nintendo come up with the term PlayStation? Or did I make that up somehow?
JonLeungApril 27, 2006
Don't know who came up with the name (it was originally the "Play Station", two words) when it was to be a Super NES CD-ROM upgrade, but the point is that Sony could've come up with a different name when they released it as their own standalone console.
But no, they stuck with "PlayStation". The PlayStation wasn't so hot at first. Newcomer, stupid name, uphill battle...at least Nintendo still has a fan base.
If FMVs like those found in Final Fantasy VII make people want to buy something that sounds like a parent's tool to distract the little ones, then a cool new control scheme can make people buy something that sounds like urine or a penis or whatever.
So when you guys disavow my point because you think "PlayStation" is part of everyday "lexicon" or whatever, you're actually proving my point that things can still sell despite a silly name.
MarioApril 27, 2006
Geez, what a bunch of cry-babies, and even the PGC staff? lol. It's not like you are the ones that make publicity for the system so why even bother, if you want to publicize it to your friends just say "want to see the new Nintendo system that I just bought?" or something like that.
Btw, I think the name is just different and quirky and funny at the same time. Heck, it isn't even a name so why should it even be pronounced at all.
ArtimusApril 27, 2006
PlayStation is not even in the same ballpark as the Wii. First of all it's comprised of words. Second it has a noun. Third it isn't a synonym for small, pee, or penis.
You're making the PlayStation thing up. No one liked the 360 either (no one does now...) but it's not actually offputting, just dreadfully dull.
Yes all press can be good press, but not when the press is actually offputting.
I didn't "make up" the PlayStation thing. I don't see how you could think that, since I never named it. If you say it with a slight pause in the middle, as in "Play Station", it really does sound like a station of play. Tell me it doesn't. I might not have noticed it myself if the weatherman didn't say it oddly on the news that one time. "My kids and their play...station"...I was like, WTF, that actually sounded childish when he said it.
"Box" is slang for female parts, and it's "X"-rated...so why no complaints about the Xbox? OMG MORE SEX STUFF.
Wii isn't a great name in my opinion either. But that's not my point. I think a solid marketing campaign can sell a product no matter what the name. The fact that you guys didn't think PlayStation or Xbox on the same level is because the products are marketed so much that no one actually stops to think about them. Or people actually think about the games they want to play on them.
Everyone's going to call it the "Nintendo' anyway ("let's play some Nintendo"), and maybe that's a good thing...keeps the company name in the popular lexicon.
I'm not exactly defending the name, but most comments against it seem to be gut-reaction fanboyism that really should be a moot point considering what "secrets" there still are of it, and its already unorthodox, standard-breaking-(and-making?) control scheme.
"Play Station" was named the way it is (by Sony BTW, Nintendo had nothing to do with it) because at the time the Silicon Graphics "Work Station" was the biggest, baddest, most impressive thing in the history of computers. Sony was trying to claim that they had the gaming-version of a supercomputer. (Then Nintendo went and built themselves an actual authentic $200 SGI Workstation.)
Now Nintendo doesn't give a crap about impressing anyone, and puts deliberate effort into looking like retards.
No I like the name. The more and more I watch people's reaction, I'm seeing that it's going to stick more and more. It has appeal to crowd that doesn't really play games because the word has no definition yet, so Nintendo is free to define it themselves. It has appeal to us XTREME GAMERS because we get to make phallic jokes. See, win win situation 8-)
Anyway you look at it, any angle you take with it, it's infectous. I like it because it can go so many ways. You can make jokes out of it, you can make communal statements about it, and it's less text you have to type. Wii. Love it or hate it, we are creating an environment perfect for a new unique product.
AManatee2April 27, 2006
people around this part of the country (arkansas, oklahoma) are not big gamers. they call check-printing at your local grocery store "new-fangled". some of their kids are much worse.
i just read the entire pgc rountable chat about the name. its brilliant, and some great ideas. made my previous post completely obsolete and look restated.
i really dont think it will be as hard to accept as many people are claiming. i think if the people 'see' the logo a lot.. the stylish-ness will get to them before the sound.
GoldenPhoenixApril 27, 2006
I still think this all boils down to one thing, Wii will stand up solely on its looks, not necessarily its sound (though I believe that will become second nature after while). I don't really recall a console name before that leaves the door so wide open for creative name manipulation to make it "cool". besides Besides many customers tend to buy things based on packaging and I feel the Wii ads along with packaging will be slick, and pleasing to the eye.
StarxxonApril 27, 2006
Here's my first post... unfortunately I don't think I'll make much friends here, since I "like" the name, and I have a somewhat crazy theory about it...
It's almost impossible that Nintendo wasn't aware of the consequences of this decision, maybe the controversy wasn't part of the initial plan, but they decided to stick to it, for the sake of it and for all it stands for.
I see that some people commenting don't hate the name that much themselves, but are afraid that it may be ridiculed at school or at their workplace... Well it shouldn't be that way... Nintendo, yourself and the world in general, shouldn't be at the mercy of schoolyard bullies!
Let's say that there is new some asian kid named "Wii" in your class at school, will you:
A) Make fun his name, calling him "wee wee", and encourage bullies to ruin part of his childhood?
B) Try to look indifferent to the name, taking a "low-profile" approach to be sure not to be ridiculed for defending Wii?
C) Defend Wii against the bullies, and side with people that are tired of mean jokes and verbal abuse (or textual abuse, on the internet)?
There is a lot of intermediary possibilities, but for the post I only use 3 categories.
Nintendo wants us to be part of group B or even better, group C. If people in group A don't want to buy the Nintendo Wii because of it's name, well so be it... We don't want you playing our console, because we don't want you to drive the Wii market toward mindless, ruthless games. You like making fun of other's people name? You hate the French or like to make fun of other languages? (Oui?) We don't want you on our online gaming network.
Group B and C are really the majority, though group A tends to be "louder", and adults usually shift towards group C as they get older, and incidentally stop playing video games since what they see on the PSx and XBox is aimed at group A in particular. You see, group B and C really fit the market Nintendo seems to be aiming at with the Wii. These people won't mind the name, some will actively defend it if they have to.
After all, it's a single syllable, and the sound of it is used much more commonly to say "we", which has a more serious and profound meaning. It also has something to do with the sound "Weee!" that we innocently shout when we have fun (usually when we were kids). Games can be serious (Chess, puzzles) and/or also innocently fun. Four players Pong with the Wii remote? That in itself could produce many "Weeee!" from perfectly sane adults in all parts of the world.
The name Revolution was a cool name and all, but it has a political meaning to many... The name also sets the expectations too high, people expecting things like force feedback and virtual reality. Wii sounds more like "A new simple way to have good old fun". People ridiculing the name will only help to create that market amongst non-players, by exaggerating the contrast between the Xbox/PS market and Nintendo's market. The XBox/PS market will be seen even more about bullying others with virtual guns, cars, making fun of names and cursing through voice links. In contrast Nintendo's market will be seen as being about simple innocent fun.
The look of the console is serious though, and there's a reason to it. Adults (a good part of what Nintendo is aiming now, despite what some say) also have "serious lives", so when they are not playing they want the console to blend with their living room. But when you power it up, the shiny blue light comes out of the dvd slot, putting an emphasis on the fun content of this otherwise serious looking rectangle box. And then you can say "Weeee!" and wave your hand in the air like some crazy kid with a laser pointer face-icon-small-smile.gif We'll get used to it, just like we'll get used to say the syllable "Wii".
The jokes will get old quickly, anyone still making these jokes in a month will only help the cause, generating a lot of "We don't care" or "We like the name".
"Nintendo wee wee ahaha"... Whatever... who's looking immature now? It's an old joke already...
GoldenPhoenixApril 27, 2006
Amazing, and well thought out post Star. I couldn't agree more, we have to realize that Nintendo is aiming at all ages, there will be games for the "hardcore" gamer and there will be games for everyone. Really I believe adults who are not into gaming at this point of time to be more attracted to the name "Wii" than the "Gamey" sounding names of the other systems.
While you can't entirely judge a book by it's cover, I was predisposed towards liking the Revolution. Was. Not anymore. I have no desire to buy a Wii. Nintendo is going to have to do something spectacular to win me back if they want my support (and I don't believe that "Wii" is the required first step in a grand plan to do just that).
And if it weren't for people complaining about the Celda demo, Nintendo would've never given Link eyebrows. Without the complaining, we wouldn't be anticipating Twilight Princess. If Nintendo wants to completely ignore the overwhelmingly negative reaction to this name, and just plow ahead with this boneheaded decision, then the failure of the Revolution (and possibly the death of Nintendo) will be on their hands, not mine.
GoldenPhoenixApril 27, 2006
For some odd reason, I am not of the caring mood when it comes to the always negative individuals who post in this forum, who just happen to not like the name.
How dare you trivialize what is clearly a very serious statement concerning such gravely important subject matter as the proper nomenclature of an audiovisual interactive entertainment machine. For shame, sir.
A) You're surprised by the reaction? I saw this coming within a couple neuron firings of seeing those three letters. And the rest of the internet appears to be giving it to Nintendo far worse than PGC is.
B) Crybaby brats are Nintendo's target audience.
MarioApril 28, 2006
Great post Starxxon, it got me thinking.
Think about a 37 year old man who hasn't played a game since Pong, he's walking through Target, sees a bunch of systems on the shelf, Playstation / Xbox / Revolution / Dreamcast / Nintendo / whatever, he keeps walking, because he's just not into games anymore. He sees the Wii, and stops. Has a look. If Nintendo have done a job enough job making the system a true gaming revolution, he will take interest in it.
Can't wait for E3 face-icon-small-smile.gif
Went to bed, woke up this morning....and the anger has left me.
I'm alright with Wii.......'nuff said.
nemo_83April 28, 2006
I'm still pissed about this, they could have polled a message board and come up with a better name than this. Nintendo now has as much of a chance in America as Microsoft in Japan. And they had so much going for them, it is just disappointing, every cycle Nintendo makes stupid...no, retarded mistakes that shouldn't make it beyond someone's common sense defense; I'd fire someone if I ran a billion dollar company and the words "let's name it Wii" dribbled out of someone's mouth onto the table. This isn't what you name your child if you want people to take him seriously in life.
"IGN Wii: We're now called IGN Wii. How could you do this to us?
Perrin Kaplan: Say that again."
When I read that, I knew I was not alone in being turned off by this name. I don't know how anyone could defend this. I don't even want to tell my friends this, I'm not, I'm just going to keep calling it Revolution. If I told them Nintendo changed the name of their new console to Wii as in you want to play with my weewee, it wouldn't be good. They are already biased Madden gamers.
Ian SaneApril 28, 2006
I never thought "Playstation" was a bad name. What do you do with games? You play them. So the system is the station that plays games. I think it sounds fine. But then I like most game system names. Xbox is pretty much the only one I don't like because it sounds so generic and uncreative.
Xbox isn't a bad name though. It's not a good one but it's not a bad one either. I honestly can't think of any name prior to Wii that I considered bad as in it would have a damaging effect on the console's marketing. Wii is actually a BAD name for a product. It sounds like it will turn people off. It sounds confusing. It sounds awkward. I've never heard a name so bad that upon hearing it I immediately predicted failure but this name is that bad. No one who isn't a hardcore Nintendo nut or hardcore gamer is going to give this thing a chance unless Nintendo shows some game that is like holodeck good.
I'm reminded of Mick Foley's book where he talks about how when Steve Austin suggested playing a character that was cold blooded he was offered names from WWF writers like Chilly McFreeze and Baron Von Ruthless. Mick said that Steve could have played the exact same character but with one of those names he would have bombed. I agree completely. That's what "Wii" is. It's a name so dumb that regardless of what the product behind it is, it will bomb.
CalibanApril 28, 2006
HAHA! It would be so cool if we got punk'd by Nintendo.
thejeekApril 28, 2006
I'm speechless that there are people on this board prepared to defend Nintendo's decision to call their new console 'Piis'. It's categorically, an indefensibly bad decision. It's not like there are any other interpretations of the word than:
first person plural pronoun - fair enough
small, in a patronising sense - not good
urine - bloody awful.
Someone should check Nintendo exec's portfolios prior to and after this announcement - I expect they were selling Nintendo shares short like they were going out of fashion. The whole thing is clearly some crazy scheme to make a quick buck as Nintendo goes noisly bust....
PaLaDiNApril 28, 2006
The point is that there are no other interpretations yet: Nintendo will make their own.
thejeekApril 28, 2006
But and new interpretations introduced by Nintendo will have an enormous mountain to climb before they overcome the existing meanings. If I decide that 'butt' actually means 'table lamp', no marketing campagn on earth is going to convince people that it isn't also, and more importantly, a word for arse.
bigdingus06April 28, 2006
i'm sick of ppl defending this name. defend the console, the games, the controller all u want, but don't just accept anything nintendo throws at u just because u 'have to'.
the name simply sucks. say it a million times and it doesn't change how god-awful it is.
the nintendo wii
the nintendo wii
the nintendo wii
DOES IT NOT SOUND WiiTARDED YET?! lol xbox is a dumb name, yet it doesn't sound childish. playstation is actually not that bad a name. GAMECUBE is dumb too, but it looks like the most badass name on the planet next to the Wii....
some of u say that it's only the 'manly man' ppl that want the name different. uh no. it's anybody that has ears and a mind of their own. there are hundreds of thousands of other words..but they have to pick one that sounds so wrong ... and yes, they know the majority of the ppl don't like it, yet we have to do what nintendo says, we have to be nintendo and be so different. finally i realized i'm no longer defending nintendo. i wanna play the rev games, but honestly, i want them to fail misserably this gen now.
how can a diehard nintendo fan say this? well maybe cuz i'm sick of being let down like a boyfriend who's in love with someone, but keeps being cheated on and screwed by that same person.
sooner or later i need to put my foot down. when nintendo knows the majority of ppl don't like something, yet they do it anyway...it just such a slap in the face. cartridges over cds, little purple lunchbox design, no online (cuz it's not what gamers want...until they just up and change their minds), a cartoon looking zelda (i liked it too and looked past the graphics, but the majority wanted the spaceworld zelda), and now the 'wii'....i'm looking past so many others but it just bothers me a company is so high on itself, it's always trying so hard to be 'different' for whatever excuse.
being different isn't bad. trying to make it so obvious that you are 'different' is. i wish nintendo was 'one' person. i'd go find nintendo, and beat him/her till they could no longer think. cuz all thinking has done for them thus far is put them in a distant third in the console race.
In the producers it's actually a different dodge - they get a load of money from investors (old ladies mainly) and then don't spend most of it (production is dirt cheap) on the assumption that nobody will bother to carefully audit where money has gone when run ends early and they pocket the money. See the original version with Gene Wilder - it's very good.
Yeah - never come across Ayn Rand before - should probably check her out (surprised my GF hasn't got any of her stuff - it sounds like it would totally be her thing)
nemo_83April 28, 2006
"It's categorically, an indefensibly bad decision."
I agree.
I'm still in a state of confusion, just not understanding why they would name a product this. Why do they do this? Why do they always do crap like use carts, case their console like a lunchbox, ignore online, try to force people to buy GBA connectivity, and now name their console something just uncomfortable.
Perrin Kaplan, I don't want to "feel" your Wii; you got me!
Hostile CreationApril 28, 2006
Hey.
I'd say I defended it at least pretty well.
Karl Castaneda #2April 28, 2006
You know, after giving it some time to marinate (marinating in wii... hehe; sorry, as much as you deny it, there are plenty of jokes to be sucked from this name), I'm a lot less hostile toward the name. I mean, do I love it? Eh, not so much, but is it the end-all destruction of the console? Nah; people are really going crazy over something that they should really just give time to think about. I mean, everything else with the Wii is going great right now. An exclusive Madden alternate being on a Nintendo console? That's HUGE. Ubi and Konami, two developers that really snub Nintendo, are on-board with good, solid material. The controller's being shown as a really great idea, and we don't even have a lot of hands-on stuff to see yet. Nintendo, for the most part, has been really on the ball lately.
Does "Wii" really destroy it that much for you?
If it does, well, that's really unfortunate. Nintendo could've certainly used your purchase, and you'd be doing yourself a disservice by missing out on what should be great games. It's a total bummer. In fact, I'm willing to bet people are more scared of the reaction of Wii than the name itself.
In a perfect world, gamers wouldn't be so self-conscious or easily angered. Should Nintendo have known that? Yeah, probably, but it's been done, so now you've got a personal decision to make. Will you or will you not let it affect you? I, for one, won't let it bother me too much. It's still gonna be rad and I'm still gonna enjoy it.
I'll end this post the same way I ended the BBB last night with the staff...
You want a Revolution? So do I, but in times like these, Wii need to stick together. Stay excellent, guys.
StarxxonApril 28, 2006
"i wish nintendo was 'one' person. i'd go find nintendo, and beat him/her till they could no longer think. "
You just proved my point... I hope guys like you leave the Nintendo platform. We don't want aggressive bullies like you in the Nintendo community.
"It's categorically, an indefensibly bad decision."
Way to go guys, that's a solid dogmatic argument. Make sure everyone defending the name looks like a fool...
You think you are the majority, but seeing how you aggressively ridicule the name, and more or less directly attack anyone that could try to defend the idea, I'm sure many of those that are indifferent or like the name restrain themselves from posting, fearing very negative replies.
In reality, amongst all readers of this thread, you (people having a very negative reaction) are probably the minority, and it should be revealed over time, as the dust settles.
You guys are saying that the name is bad because others will make fun of it. If it's a bad thing why are you making fun of the name yourself? Why do you try to invent new sick jokes in every post? Why do you encourage and participate to this immature name-calling game?
Edit: ViewtifulGamer, great post, and you don't even like the name that much face-icon-small-smile.gif
That's actually pretty similar to monadnock valley... lol. Some developers snatch up this really hilly, really undesirable land and get investments to develop it into a resort. Then they hire protagonist of the story to design the resort. The investors actually sold 200% of the venture, and they're sure that with the unconventional terrain and an architect who is generally reviled by everyone respectable, they can get away with pocketing the difference after the venture tanks.
Only problem is, Rand's hero may be disliked by the fashionable intellectuals, he's a brilliant architect and Monadnock Valley becomes a stunningly successful resort among people who you'd never expect to see at resorts: the middle class. In a way, monandnock valley was "blue ocean" too. The very cheap, hilly and convoluted terrain broke all the traditions of what a popular resort should look like, the architect chosen for the project virtually guaranteed that typical, status quo, upper crust resort goers would sneer at it, and the resort proved astoundingly successful when a larger "blue ocean" market was tapped: the middle-class.
... ANYWAYS...
Once again, I will say the name has potential from a visual perspective, not necessarily how it sounds. Conciously or subconciously people will relate the "ii" to not only the system's controller but also as multiple individuals enjoying the system together. With the iPod being so popular will help reinforce the "hip" and slick image of the two "ii". There is so much that can be done with the name too, unlike any other name I've seen previously for a console, it can be used in a variety of ways that do not necessarily relate to immature bathroom humor (an example is my signature). Not only that, but it can be used as its own logo, without the need of shortening the name up.
OverHeatApril 28, 2006
If this name has done nothing else, it has re-affirmed my belief that the collective maturity of the internet "gaming geek" community is roughly 9 years old. Seriously, all of you; when was the last time you heard or made a joke using the word "wee" to mean pee or penis? What makes it even more pathetic is the fact that most "gamers" are supposed to be in their mid-twenties. My favorite posts are the ones that read something like; "OMG Nintendo is doomed now. They are gonna lose the worlds market." *claps for American arrogance* Guess what buckaroos? USA=world is not an equation. How many of you have gone to some Japanese gamers' posting sites to see what they are saying? How many of you even know of any sites like that, not to mention even being able to read enough kanji to figure out what they are saying?
Not "cool", huh? MOST EXCELLENT.
Someone asked about Japanese meaning, and since it seems no one has bothered to address this, I guess I will. FIrst off, the two I's ii, pronounced "eeee" (just say the vowel "e" and hold it for about a second) means "good". I have no doubt that this name was predominantly made by the Japanese. Why? Well, unlike Americans, who look at words at face value (goodbye, age of poets) the Japanese absolutely ADORE giving names deep meanings, putting underlying values within their written words. This is most prominent in kanji. The symbols are drawn in such a way as to represent several meanings. Reason being that all kanji (well, ALMOST all anyway) do actually have at least two, if not more meanings. To that end, I am most impressed with Nintendo. They seem to have tried very hard to bring the concept of kanji to America with Wii. Creating a word that sounds one way, but as many highly literate posters have pointed out *rolls eyes* it is MISSPELLED. *GASP!* Misspelling it intentionally to give the word deeper meaning is, IMHO un-freakin-believable. They created a word with deeper meaning than any pun could ever have. They created a word that is easily pronounced/understood by the only two markets that matter to them. (English-speaking and Asian-speaking markets, as if you didnt know. face-icon-small-wink.gif )
Too bad they didnt ask somebody first; "So, we know that the average age of video gamers is supposed to be 20-30, but what is the general maturity level?" Then they may have known that the general communties response would have been "OMFG tey have teh wee wees TEEHEEHEEHEEHEE--"*SLAP!*
To that end, I really like this new name. I give a big kudos to Nintendo for putting such a novel idea as to merge the concept of kanji with english. I give a big, fat, spittle flinging rasberry to all the people who cant/dont bother trying to look for deeper meanings to the things they see.
My worst name currently? X-Box360. As one bad guy said to another in the movie Last Action Hero; "Wha....why-a you do dees? Why you a turn ona me? Why-a you make-a da 360 ona me?"
"It's a 180 you IDIOT. ONE. EIGHTY. If I did a 360, I would have made a COMPLETE circle and be RIGHT back where I WAS when I STARTED!!!"
And that, really, sums up the 360 IMO at this point. The only difference is, they threw some make-up on during the turn. Just remember; when you wash away the make-up, you still have the same, dirty hoe underneath it all.
.....and as I am sure this post will be lost on many, I have a simpler version for us all to enjoy. After all, I wouldn't want to let all the other fanboys out there to think us Nintendo guys can't keep up with the mudslinging! face-icon-small-smile.gif *read the rest at your own risk*
Nice try BigJim, but when I said that all video game players above the age of 30 were emotionally stunted manchildren, I was paraphrasing a humor article found here:
I even lowered the age he said for more humor value. Good eyes, though. Almost had me.
With the unveiling of the new controller, it drew the proveribial lines in the sand. This time, it seems more definative lines have drawn...
So far, gut reactions have been overwhelmingly WTF. Then the others who say 'OMG grow up.' And that's just the PGC boards, I can't imagine what Gamespot's, Gameinformer's, IGN's, etc. boards are going through...
Gotta give it up for the lurkers that come out of hiding, to challenge our regular posters. Where have you been all this time?
While we're quoting movie lines, here's one from Enemy of the State:
"Either you're really smart, or really stupid." Which one is Nintendo?
Being a Nintendo fan means to have a masochistic relationship. A defensive one if you will. So how's this situation any different?
Will this stop me from buying it? Probably not. Can I say/type 'Wii?' comfortably? Not yet....
Yeah, according to traditional thought, this is proverbial suicide. But this time around, Nintendo has been anything but traditional... Where are they going with this?
CalibanApril 28, 2006
Have some of you noticed the impact Wii has caused on the PGC forums? There is literally twice the people logged on every day compared to pre-Wii. Cool!
Let's see how Nintendo tries to market their way out of a hole.
Easy, just use the unique way the name looks and market it. If done well the name will redeem Nintendo's unique and IMO good descision.
PryopizmStan Ferguson, Staff AlumnusApril 28, 2006
As it's been proven over and over again, the way to win the mass audience's favor is by being unique. That's why so many unusual games like Ico, Odama, and Viewtiful Joe do so well against common games like GTA, Madden, and anything with a flavor-of-the-month rapper in it.
EasyCureApril 28, 2006
the whining needs to stop guys, in all seriosness. its just a name. yes argue that its an uphill battle for nintendo's marketing all you want but its because YOU think of Wii as either urine or a penis or a little penis or whatever. its just YOU. there are, however, alot of YOU. then there are people that fall into the catagories of b and c that Starxxon pointed out in his awesome post. You obviously miss what nintendo is doing with their "new generation" game machine. all along they've been shoving it down your throat that they want to be "disruptive" and change who the mainstream is made up of. it wont be about YOU anymore; the insecure 15-25 year old who makes a pee joke because you cant come to terms with something that is clearly beyond YOU and your image conscious ways. just because YOU dont like the name and dont understand or want to understand the meaning doesnt mean nintendo cant define what Wii stands for in the newer gamers they will be trying to reach. teen girls to adult women, seniors, people of middle-age. the majority wont think for a second about urine or penises. nintendo has an opportunity to define their new console in a way that will turn these people on to their machine as opposed to the compitition who will only cater to their demographic. i understand this.
before i go on, i would just like to point out that i do not like the name personally, and hopefully you arent to ignorant to of missed this part of my post becuase what i am saying goes against what you say and believe in. i really dont like the name, i dont like the way it sounds, but i can see what nintendo wants to do with it.
for a while now they have been comparing themselves to apple with their iPods and myspace. its clear that they want everyone of every age to pick up and play their console. it still bothers me when i see a man in his 30s and in a business suit walking down the street with a turquoise ipod mini in his hands as he's waiting for a bus or hailing a cab. why? because iPod to me always seemed to me as it was only marketed to young preteens and teens who are the ones you would most likely think to walk around listening to music everywhere. standing around and singing to a song no one else can hear or tapping your feet to a beat no one can feel isnt something you would normally think of an adult doing in public. however the appeal of the iPod is so strong that it does just that. i've seen people nearing their 50s who have ipods and ipod mini's and nano's. its become such a cultural phenom that the name ipod itself became synomanous with portable mp3 players as a whole, just as nintendo did with video games back in the 80s. i had family that had a sega genisis but if you spoke to their parents they would tell you their kids were "playing nintendo".
thats what they want to go for again. YOU dont seem to see that though because all YOU do is put the name down without giving it any thought because YOU are the "hardcore" gamer that doesnt want to think outside the box, who is too insecure for change. you'd rather make pee jokes then to think about what new meanings the name could mean. there will be plenty of you who will say "the name sucks and im not buying it because it sucks" and you know what i have to say about that? fine, go spend an extra $300 bucks on a BS3 or xbox 3-sux-ty (thanks Ice Cold) and play games the "old" way as it will one day be called. play your rehashes and don't even bother to think that if it werent for a company that used to make japanese playing cards in the 1890's or so to one day up and decide to become a video game company, which at the time was thinking outside the box becuase the video game market crashed....just know that if it werent for that little company that wanted to change the landscape of entertainment, you wouldnt have those machines you spend excessive amounts of money for but havent exactly offered you anything new since the last generation. Nintendo will have their revolution even if it takes time. so far all the peices are falling into place in their favour, dispite of what YOU might think, simply based on a name. for those of you who dislike the name, as do i, but believe in what the Wii has to offer, i applaud you for not letting something so trivial stop you from experiencing something new come this fall, and for you lucky ones in two weeks in LA. i reitterate, for those of you who will simply not buy it based on a name; good riddance, you're not in our fanbase anyway.
i can see nintendo having sleek, small packaging for their tiny, revolutionary console that one day be the next cultural phenom like ipod. they will have their own little section apart from the rest at a place like best buy, it will be the one behind the cages, and hopefully one day be synonmous with video games and gaming again.
i want to say this again in case you forgot, i personally dont like the name. i am not defending nintendo because i 'have to' but because i want to. i want what they want in the industry; a change. i've wanted one for awhile. i hope they deliver. normally i try not to be super opinionated in my posts because like Starxxon pointed out, some posters can come across as those group A bullies, and i simply dont want to be bullied because of MY opinion. i come to PGC to discuss nintendo, to have my opinion be heard (read) not bashed. i wont want to get into arguments with other posters becuase our views differ, because i know i wont bother putting up a fight. i would rather post somewhere else then to feel bullied on the one site i come to for a real disussion.
sorry for such a long post but i felt it was needed to counter all the bitching and moaning...so i only have one last thing to say;
YOU haters can bitch and moan all you please, the rest of us; Wii will be the ones ahead in the game.
ArbokApril 28, 2006
I leave for a couple of days, only to get back and find this bombshell?!
Well, I hate it... but I'm so late to the "event" that it almost doesn't even deserve mention at this point. I do hope, or pray might be better wording, that this ends up like "Nitro" where Nintendo instead reverts back to the old code name like they did with the DS. Although "Nitro" was never given the press that Wii was, which worries me... god not only is it hard to see one self saying that, it even looks ugly when typed out. ;_;
mantidorApril 28, 2006
Typed out looks cool! Pronouncing it no so much. Try the Flash which is nice, but DONT read the explanation because it couldnt be more corny.
It took me until very recently to get used to it (I hate it very much, but Im used to it sadly), so be prepared for some time trying to make any sense of this absolutely insane decision!
ArbokApril 28, 2006
Well it has already started to look better to the eyes, conjuring up less images of World War II with each glance (something which I see I was not alone with). Although, as you mention mantidor, I just can't see my self saying this outloud. I'm going to go play "wee"... oh I just hope the name gels over time, but even though the Playstation and Xbox names weren't ever great to begin with at least they couldn't be confused for a common adjective...
MarioApril 28, 2006
I've thought of the best example yet!
Rock superstars Queen. Also a word with one syllable, and it's dirty meaning is a LOT worse than "piss". Also one of the most recognisable and influential music groups in history.
Also, U2. What the HELL does U2 mean? Nobody cares!
GoldenPhoenixApril 28, 2006
Mantidor and Easy, both well said. It is actually pleasing as a visual image, but it is hard to get used to how it is pronounced, then again I bet with time it will be second nature. If people don't want to say "We" then why not say "Why" or "W i i", personally I'll continue to pronounce it as Nintendo wants, but that does not mean everyone has to. In the long run I think it will be the looks of the name rather than how it sounds that sells it.
I'm sure that would go over great with the non-gamers Nintendo is trying to attract...
Customer: "Excuse me, do you have any 'Why's in stock?"
Walmart Clerk: "What?"
Customer: "Why, Y... the thing the plays games."
Walmart Clerk: "Huh?"
OK, I found this kinda funny. That logo isn't very original. I was sitting on BART (that's the subway type system in the Bay Area) and happened to look up at a poster on the wall. It's an ad for a website called we-matter
Now I was sitting there looking at how familar their logo looks...check it out.
HAHAHA..
ArtimusApril 29, 2006
That logo looks nothing like Wii's logo...
EasyCureApril 29, 2006
theres another point i let out on this mornings post, mainly cuz i was waaay tired to keep typing.
to all the "haters" and just to clarify, the haters are the ones saying things like "OH NINTENDOZ IS DO0MED CUZ THE NAME SUX I WONT BYE ONE1!";
to you haters i say this...
its still the Revolution you fell in love with. its still the only console trying something new and trying to change the way we play games forever. its still that silly little wand that will revolutionize it all, so why simply turn your back? why dont YOU go out and spread the word about Wii. ever hear the term "be part of the solution, not part of the problem"? well learn it and stick with it. is it really that much of a 'slap in the face' to you becuase they chose a name that you dont like? they are still going to make those revolutionary games, their going to pour %100 percent into their new system becuase its something they believe in, and a lot of you believed in as well before the official name; so why hate on it now? its your responsibility to spread the positive about Wii. have non-gamer friends or family? tell him about everything else first, leave the name for last. most people will think "wow thats really different..." and that pro's will out weigh the con's. you wanted a revolution, no? well help nintendo bring one. everyone of you who thinks nintendo has an uphill marketing battle, make it a little easier on the. you're so sure that their PR people suck, so why not help them out? do what The Traveler did and make trialers, make convincing ads to float in the 'net (and not ones with urinals and stuff bashing the name). if not, like i said in my last post; good riddance, you're not part of the fanbase.
ArtimusApril 29, 2006
Ugh. This discussion is so annoying.
When 95% of people actually think the name is either dumb or bad, it doesn't MATTER why they think that. It doesn't matter if everyone in the world has an immature reason for hating it, what matters it that they do. People consider Nintendo iddy-kay and ay-ga because the GameCube was purple. That's a STUPID reason to think that, but it still hurt the console. Saying "grow up" doesn't undo the damage. If people think of pee and penises when they read the name, then it doesn't matter how immature that it. It's not fair or mature, but it's how it is.
What it comes down to is that there is no reason to have a name that causes those reactions. You can have a disruptive, bizarre and originally name that doesn't have bad connotations, confusing pronounciation and a horrible cheesy basis.
MarioApril 29, 2006
Hey guys, maybe if we proclaim our posts to be plain facts like Artimus does, people like Artimus will read them!
I repeat, Queen.
Penny arcade sums up this debate beautifully:
Quote
People who hate it because they hate X, people who hate it because it is not good, people who like it because other people hate it, people who like it because they are "above the fray," and people who like it because they like X...
Now all I see is a kind of template superimposed over every motive, as though the argument were taking place between cells on a spreadsheet.
Will Reggie and or/ Harrison please stand up to do some damage control? 'Cuz Kaplan isn't really helping...
I'm sorry, but once you get older than 25, you're actually MORE likely to associate it with pee or penis because you have children or grandchildren.
It simply sounds silly in a normal sentence, and the innuendo is unavoidable whether you're trying or not: Do you have a Wii? I was up all night last night playing Mario on my Wii. Come over and check out my Wii.
I am the one who generally sits back and takes a calm wait and see approach with Nintendo's decisions, but this still sits like a bad prank. My girlfriend can't stop complaining either. She can't fathom how Nintendo could willingly name their console a word that sounds like urine. We aren't 15 - 25. We aren't insecure gang bangers. We are calm sensible adults and the associations are locked in our psyche like a two-ton roadblock.
Nice sidestepping of my actual argument there. I guess the problem is that you agree?
If people think it sounds stupid, it doesn't matter why. That's the problem. Being 'mature' isn't relevant if no one is.
We'll see how the market bears this out. Until then, 99% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
"Nice sidestepping of my actual argument there. I guess the problem is that you agree?"
Your argument was two parts obvious and two parts pointless. As a result, I didn't feel the need to take it seriously.
If the haters and I were arguing in real life, do you think they'd seriously be able to argue that it sounded like "wee wee"? There are so many instances of the internet being grossly different from the real world, more specifically the real marketplace. This is very likely another.
GoldenPhoenixApril 29, 2006
You know, I always thought "we" meant more than "penises" or "going to the bathroom". Silly me, guess I have been out of touch with the U.S. culture longer than I originally thought.
matt ozApril 29, 2006
I personally don't have a problem with the name Wii. I don't like it, but I don't hate it either. I don't care what they hell they call it.
But the fact of the matter is this: we, as Nintendo fans, missed out on a lot of games over the past 2 generations, due to Nintendo's poor decision-making. When they decided to use cartridges instead of discs for the N64, they allowed Sony to move ahead of them, and forge new relationships with Nintendo's business partners.
When they chose a childish-looking design for the Gamecube, they further painted themselves into a corner. Whether you like it or not, IMAGE MATTERS. It matters in nearly every aspect of our lives, especially with something so disposable and unnecessary as video gaming.
For the first time, I had to buy a non-Nintendo system in 2003, because I was missing out on too many good games. Nintendo has lacked third-party support for quite some time, and if they keep making these oddball decisions, everything they've been gaining with Wii may be lost.
Ugh. You're not even talking about the same thing I am. I'm not talking about arguing anything. I'm saying that if people think of bad things when they hear the name, then it doesn't matter how mature they are. Telling someone to grow up isn't going to change what they think. And what they think is what matters when it comes to image.
It won't be lost, it should be quite apparent this is not the case from the EA interview, along with Ubisofts support. They are more interested in what it does rather than what it is named, which I believe will also be a mute point once the dust has settled regardless of what people may think now. Like the controller, this too will die down and people will get used to it regardless of their supposed relation of "we" to "pee" instead of referencing people together.
There is no point in hammering any of the arguments anymore, it is quite apparent that the few on this board that have defended the name with LOGICAL reasons are being ignored by "wee" minded folks, oh wow look I made a funny. Maybe I should say "wee wee" minded folks, since that is obviously the only way most of the detractors think they can view the word "we" ignorning the fact that the word has another meaning both here and in other cultures.
DeguelloJeff Shirley, Staff AlumnusApril 29, 2006
I have never ever heard the term "wee" used as slang for urine in my entire life until two days ago.
I usually heard it in conjuction with "hours of the morning," or "little thing, isn't he?"
The hyperactive internet culture that derives and feeds off of innuendo is the only ones making fun of this. And the internet has been known to fabricate innuendo where there was none before. And since that is the case, it appears that no name Nintendo could have come up with would be able to avoid massive ridicule. For example, Penny Arcade, who so recently cajoled Nintendo for this in a comic, also referred to the Xbox as the Three-Sh***y. The Playstation 3 would seem to have likely avoided this, but when strapped for something to make fun of, they latched onto THE FONT of the name. THE FONT.
I see no people lining up to called the PSP a Urinator's dream. Now I have heard "pee" in reference to urine several times in my life, and heck it's in there TWICE. Where are the jokes? I mean isn't saying "PSPee HURK HURK" Gamefaqs material? Aren't we beyond this? Heck Tim Buckley, this Nintendo-hating, DS-trashing, thinly veiled fanboy Comic writer of CtrlAltDel says he likes the name, or at least doesn't hate it, and he's telling all detractors to grow up. That is man is in any position to tell ANYBODY to grow up is ludicrous, yet he is and is right.
I certainly hope all this "wee" nonsense gets out of all of your systems before E3. Because when I go to E3 and "wee"-jokes are still on the minds of everybody, it will reveal more about us than it will reveal about Nintendo's Marketing strategy.
With this announcement, Nintendo not only told everybody the final name of their groundbreaking new console, they held up a mirror to us all, and right now I think I am a wee bit saddened at what I am seeing right now.
(Didja see that? I said wee in a sentence. Isn't that funny? ha ha.)
He's from America. And why ask that question like that? It's not as though this is a forum frequented exclusively by citizens of the UK.
Also, I'm not from the UK, but from what I gather it's used in a similar way as Deg described. A la the Scottish "wee lad" variety of the word.
Yes, exactly like what happend to the DS name... oh wait.
Personally, I don't care that it means to take a piss in some cultures, I just don't like the name in general and can't picture saying it in casual conversation very easily. Much like I would hate it if it was called Wiiv or something similar to that name.
However, the name is only, ONLY, meant to sizzle a product. People can cry tell their face turns blue that not everyone thinks of taking a piss or that it's not a horrible name in general, but it's clear that enough do that it has become such the issue that it has. People are also kind of looking at this like Nintendo was backed into a corner about this. Like they opened up their check book and figured they could only afford: "Three letters... and two of them have to be the same, now what can we use?"
This is not like HD support or the hardware specs where there was logic and revenue choices behind them, this is only a marketing tool that should make the product more appealing to as many potentional customers as possible. Not see Nintendo supporters turn against each other in some "New Coke" style fashion while the media outlets ridicule the idea on their sites and even during interviews to PR reps' faces.
StarxxonApril 29, 2006
Ok let's forget for a moment about the people that don't like the name, it's obvious that most of the time their arguments end up looking childish. They are running in circles with variations the same jokes. If you don't have anything else new to add, well... don't face-icon-small-happy.gif
For those who don't hate the name, here are some wishful speculation of mine about the name. It makes you think about WWII? But there are two "W"s instead of one...
Remove War from "World War II" and you get: World II, or Wii in abbreviated form.
World II would be a great alternate name for Nintendo's Wii.
Virtual Reality, in the broader sense of emerging interactive 3D technologies, can be described as a "second world" into which we can build and do things that are beyond our physical reality. Think about "Second Life", the online multi-player virtual world, which is also using the same concept in its title.
I guess you could also remove "World" from WWII to get Wii, but "War II" would be more suited for the competing consoles, which are pushing hard for their best-selling war simulator games. So I guess it could be either World II or War II? I like World II better...
"They chose to create new wars, Wii chose to create new worlds." Could be one of the slogan for Wii face-icon-small-smile.gif
EasyCure, great post and thanks for quoting me face-icon-small-wink.gif You should separate your post into paragraphs though, but don't worry about it, I made the same mistake (a long time ago) when I first started to post on forums.
Spending last night with an adult Englishman/woman I can say it is used as you described but it's main usage is for example, 'The dog is wee-ing all over the carpet!' - or - 'I need to wee.'
Not that it really matters. 13 year olds will laugh everytime they say it, but hey, laughter does make the world go round.
DeguelloJeff Shirley, Staff AlumnusApril 29, 2006
"Yes, exactly like what happend to the DS name... oh wait."
Exactly what happened. You may not remember the heady days of 2004 but a great deal of people likened the "DS" title to Down's Syndrome (Hurk Hurk) Nobody remembers that because most of the hatred was directed towards the unfathomable idea of using a touchscreen as a control method, the failure of such a method to create any new game type, and the inevitable failure of the DS against the PSP, especially in Japan, where they expected the PSP to just absolutely dominate.
Nile BoogieApril 29, 2006
Here in Philly "Wee" doesn't mean take a leak, or at least not in my hood.
What's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. - that old guy.
PryopizmStan Ferguson, Staff AlumnusApril 29, 2006
I associate Wii with the words "twee" or "weak" and not so much "wee wee" or "wiener."
Given that, I still hate the name. I hate the way it looks and sounds. I hate the logo, it looks like an apple rip-off. Yeah, how unique is that?
This is all just a load of BS. There's nothing unique about Wii except that it isn't a word. It's a ridiculous misspelling of a pronoun and will invoke nothing but apathy among the non-gamers and casual gamers alike. And when it does provoke a response, in my experience, it's generally one of derision.
I don't put stock in conspiracy theories, but one can hope that the joke is on us.
When compared to Xbox or PS3, it is indeed unique. Perhaps you should read a post a couple pages back that stated the logic of the spelling from a Japanese context, in addition to the fact that "Wii" will not have the same meaning behind it in different cultures (except of course the two "ii" symbolizing togetherness). The name was derived to have universal appeal, meaning and use, that indeed is unique for a gaming console. On your point of "derision", the name was announced 2 days ago, and like the controller it will take time to get used to it and its marketing potential visually. Wait until this revelation can simmer a bit in people's minds and come back in 4 months or so.
EasyCureApril 29, 2006
Thanks. I got over the initial shock/hatred of the name the very next day, I am used to it, I just don't like it.
Though I don't like it, I would be the first one to come up with something unique, quirky, and catchy to make the name better. That's what I wish more people would do then simply dismiss it.
If you read a post in the EA/Madden thread, this one poster had an awesome idea for a comercial spot. I wish I could remember who it was but it was a great idea. I added my two cents to it though, because I felt that as good as the commercial would be to ge the name out there, it would be promoting the sound of the name and not the visual as well. The visual rocks (if you saw the trailer) but its the sound of the name that bugs me. It is awkward to say, like most people have stated already, that's what I don't like. I just can't see myself asking to preorder a Wii. In time I will be more accustomed to saying it outloud, but for now I will stick to repeating it in my head.
Nintendo needs to push the visual as well as the sound of the name for it to work the way they want to. Really emphasize on the community aspect of it as well as the 'wiimotes' that set the console apart. The name really isn't that bad, it just needs work. If they can market it the right way, I will grow to like it more, but until then it's a bad name to say aloud IMO.
GoldenPhoenixApril 29, 2006
I agree Easy, Nintendo has alot of work cut out for it to make it sound good, it is foreign to alot of us here in the states and probaly in the UK. E3 should be a good place to see how Nintendo attacks the "sound" of the name. I personally think it would be pretty cool if it was also an acronym which was stated previously, not sure where, but they suggested "Wireless, interactive, innovative". On a side note, I do apologize if I come off a little ticked at some of the people, but I do get frustrated when it is pretty obvious some are not keeping any open mind to the potential of it, instead of obsessing over the negative connotation of the sound "we", and instead see things from a more universal appeal along with marketing potential.
Hostile CreationApril 29, 2006
"I hate the logo, it looks like an apple rip-off. Yeah, how unique is that?"
Yeah, because the marketing needs to be overflowing with original brilliance. Apple's making tons of money. Marketing isn't about being 100% original, it's about being original where it matters and taking good ideas where they can be used.
Associating Wii with iPod is a good thing, because everyone likes the iPod.
Also, the logo is great. Simplistic, but aesthetically excellent. From a design perspective, it's very well made. (Gamecube logo still wins though face-icon-small-shocked.gif)
GC logo was quite cool, though I have to admit the full name wasn't the best. I personally think Wii beats the crap out of GC's name, mainly because it is unique for a console name and doesn't look like a kid's toy.
StarxxonApril 29, 2006
Just a little visual note for the few Nintendo fans that hate Apple:
IwataTGS2005.jpg
Do I really have to explain?
IceColdApril 29, 2006
I don't like Nintendo comparing themselves so much with Apple. Not because I don't like Apple, but Nintendo isn't the same as them! Nintendo is their own company with their own ideals, their own vision and their own product. They shouldn't go out of their way to be like Apple.
Also, affiliating yourself with other companies always leaves the chance that you will alienate some of your potential userbase. I am just not a supporter of it..
And I thoroughly dislike that white colour.
Hostile CreationApril 29, 2006
But Apple has had some immense success recently, and they've both had similar ideals for about the same time now.
Companies always partner up and cooperate or compare themselves to one another. It's something that's done in business, a matter of perspective.
"And I thoroughly dislike that white colour."
Good thing they'll have black and green and red and whatever else, as well.
KDR_11kApril 29, 2006
Let him use one. PC games are completely overpriced and uncommon in Japan.
GoldenPhoenixApril 30, 2006
I don't think it is because Nintendo is trying to be just like apple, but they are trying to use a similar strategy to them. Apple has sucessfully made a big impact away from the PC vs Mac battlegrounds while maintaining much of what they are good at, like Nintendo says they wish to do the same with the next generation of consoles.
KDR_11kApril 30, 2006
BTW, maybe I should mention that I had no initial negative reaction towards Wii except that it really doesn't sound like "videogame system" or "electronics".
by the way, all this speak of nintendo comparing themselves to apple.....I FIGURED OUT THE LAST BIG SECRET OF Wii!!!
The Wii will become an iPod docking station via usb, from which you can d/l songs from iTunes on Wii Wi-Fi connection, and play them on your house speakers. Also you'll be able to d/l iPod original games on the next line of iPod that plays games using a scroll wheel, its GENIOUS!!! they alreayd made iPod with video, why not handle a simple game? when it happens, remember who called it!!!
OMG you guys are like soooooo immature. Can't you, like, grow up and stop making pee jokes? I'm going home.
...strange... I'm of the opinion that a sign of maturity would be making pee jokes, and not seeing that as an inherently good or bad thing, just as a joke that, like all jokes, needs to be used in the right contexts so it doesn't grow old.
I LURV Conker's Bad Fur Day. I absolutely love it. I was contemplating buying an XBox just if Rare made a sequel (which, obviously, didn't happen on either count). Does my appreciation of Conker's urine jokes, gore, and etc. mark me as immature? Does that game's toilet humor automatically mark it as inferior? Or do pee jokes have their proper place on the mature-conversation-topics pyramid, that tiny tiny "use sparingly" section up top along with the blonde and yo-mama jokes?
I say they do, and trumpet the clarion call of "moderation in all things!" Huzzah!
I didn't mean it that way. I meant that there is a chance that the company that you associate yourselves with has some detractors. There are some people that are against the values of, in this case, Apple, and what it stands for. When Nintendo associates themselves with Apple, then those people would think twice about Nintendo. They are potential Nintendo users, but with this association, they could be alienated. Same thing with Pepsi..
Also, I don't believe that Nintendo is similar enough to Apple to be trying to emulate them so. I want Nintendo to have their own identity, and this is not the way to do it.
Yeah..
Hey hugs are always nice :-P. You know you may be onto something, that would be pretty funny!
UrkelApril 30, 2006
You'll have a hard time convincing me that this whole backlash against Wii is anything more than a kneejerk reaction. How is this any different from the whole "Rev is d0000med" talk back when the Revmote Wiimote was first unveiled? Back then, anybody that said the controller was a good idea was deemed a "mindless fanboy" or an "apologist". Pretty much the same things are being said here.
You know, what if Nintendo ended up calling it the RS, like rumored? Surely, there's no way you can make fun of that name, right?
It certainly doesn't sound at all like the word "arse". Not even a little. And I'm sure there wouldn't be retarded "I'm going to play with my RS?", or "Want to play with my RS?", or "Gee, my RS sure is little", or "I bought a new wand for my RS" jokes.
No, this is the only name in the whole universe that invites immature comments.
As for my personal opinion on the name, I'm rather indifferent. My first reaction was "Why'd they give it a Chinese name?". I'd rather they call it the Rev, but it doesn't really matter. It certainly doesn't warrant this level of outrage. It's just a kinda weird name. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Even though I don't really care what it's called, if we're still getting stupid urine and penis jokes AFTER E3 then I hope Nintendo sticks with the name purely out of spite. Grow up.
(BTW, I'd really like to thank the mods for allowing, like, a dozen different threads all complaining about the name. Maybe somebody will actually think of a new penis joke in thread #13!)
Actually, you wouldn't be the first, I called a similar scenario sometime ago, though not here. But I'm happy to see a second person having thought about it! face-icon-small-smile.gif
Iwata, when the Revolution was first unveiled, alluded to something that wouldn't be game related...But at the same time saying that Nintendo was to remain focused on games... So, what if some other company took care of all the non-game stuff?
They want to build a game store with a model similar to iTunes, but they don't have the expertise to build it in-house. Apple has it, they could provide the infrastructure, servers and front-end for the Wii store. And while they are at it, why not sell tunes and movies that can be played on the Wii or transfered to an iPod?
Apple is currently trying to find a way to reach living-rooms, so they can sell TV shows and movies directly on a TV. They cannot go with Sony, because they directly compete with them in many areas, including selling movies and music online. Same thing with Microsoft. Both Sony and MS hope to use their next-gen console to sell movies and music online, thus bypassing the iPod and iTunes phenomena.
If Apple released a Media-Center for the living-room like it's rumored, they would have to compete with the PS3 and XBox 360, which would probably sell for about the same price, but the PS3 and XBox would have tons more games. By making an alliance with Nintendo, they could enter the living-room media-center market, and have tons of cool games from none other than Nintendo! They wouldn't need to release their own machine, the Wii could provide all the functionality needed. iPod games from Nintendo wouldn't be so far behind...
The best argument that can be made for this scenario is that Nintendo and Apple are complementary. They don't directly compete, as Apple doesn't sell games or games system, and Nintendo doesn't want to start selling movies and music themselves on Wii.
Aside from the game store itself, Apple could also build the Wii interface, with part of it being similar to Front-Row.
By some coincidence Apple released, no so long after Nintendo, a small remote included with all intel Macs that's used to control the Front-Row media-center application. They tout the fact that it only has 6 buttons, which is not so far from the simplistic Wii remote design. The Wii remote would be just perfect to control Front-Row, and the motion sensing could have the bonus of enabling variable speed scrolling in long lists.
A $200 TV setup box that has iTunes built-in, can download/stream music, TV shows and movies on a TV screen, that can officially dock an iPod, AND play the Nintendo game catalog, plus all new kinds of games like a next-generation Mario using an evolutionary 3d control device? This would sell like crazy...
I could go on an on about why it would make sense, and what clues can we find about it. But I don't want to look like a lunatic face-icon-small-smile.gif
Actually I stopped believing in my theory sometime ago, seeing I was the only one to see so much into it. Also when Apple announced the switch to intel, I began to think that it wouldn't make much sense since Wii is using a PowerPC. But... Apple has invested millions in producing code written for the PPC, they can't just throw it in the trash when the transition is over...
But here's why I'm starting to believe in this theory again...
Wii could (also) mean "we" as in "We, Nintendo and Apple"
Considering it would be a major alliance between a big Japanese and a big American company, my "WWII minus War = Wii" theory would also make sense...
Apple haters, prepare yourself mentally for when Nintendo drops the "Bomb" in a few days.
I fail to see how Shakespeare's plays were any less masterpieces for his populism and pun-ditry. Would we deny Southpark's value as a cultural satire merely because it contains content that our puritan-police deem distasteful? And what is humor, even toilet humor, but merely another avenue for self-exploration and discovery? And testiing personal boundaries?
Besides, given that humans are the only creatures who are capable of laughter, or punning, or any such abstract irony, how can this be anything but elevating?
Wa-wa, on this point we shall have to disagree. I believe that humor is a valuable tool we have to explore an issue, and should not be ignored or poo-poo'ed.
Starxxon, interesting theories. Lots of conspiracy, little fact, lots of fun, lol!
Myself, I've been trying to ponder a future Apple-Nintendo alliance on the portable device market in which GB hardware would be micro-nized to the point where it could included at low cost to an iPod device... or similar such mobile electronics.
~Carmine M. Red
Kairon@aol.com
StarxxonApril 30, 2006
Yeah, I know Kairon, I have nothing tangible to base my theory and it could very well not happen. But to me it would just be common sense.
What you are saying about the GB/iPod merging can also apply to Wii.
Wii will have all the electronics to play movies and music, and an Apple media-center would have the electronics to play games. Combining both makes sense since you can only do one of these at a time anyway.
Oh, and just another possible clue before I go to bed... What do you think the Broadway and HollyWood code names really mean?
GoldenPhoenixMay 01, 2006
Well with Nintendo stating that there is a big revelation for Wii at E3, this theory isn't that far fetched. It seems to me that they dismissed the motion control of the nunchuck attachment as something minor compared what they will reveil. So who knows? If your theory proves to be true, that may be the killer blow to both Sony and MS.
EasyCureMay 01, 2006
wow...i was really just kidding when i brought up the Wii/iPod thing. only thing i had to go on was the frequent comparisons and the fact that Wii would have two USB ports, and how in another thread people were saying external hard drives (like mp3 players) could be used as a storage device. your theory is much better and is plausable then my 'guess'.
And to who ever asked the hollywood and broadway question, that only adds to this crazy theory.
looks like iGames could be the next big thing. maybe call it WiiGames? nah.
if this turned out to be true, Wii would be incredible. Rent movies, d/l tv shows, music and classic nintendo games. it could take the world by storm. personally i dont like the iPod brand because i dont like trends, and there are mp3 players out there with more features than the iPod, but its not like i completely despise it and wouldn't buy a Wii if they did partner with Apple for the d/l service. Sadly there would be people that would.
Oh and while im thinking of apple and nintendo comparisons, they both LOVE to milk their products for everything its worth. one of the reasons i bought the mp3 player i currently own over apple is that it has fm radio built in, with recording of fm radio built in. at the time there was a certain NYC 'shock jock' that was retiring from FM radio and i wanted to record every show i could. with the ipod i would actually have to buy a seperate peripheral just to listen to radio, and not even be able to record from it. doesnt that remind you of nintendo releasing peripherals to add something to a formula that could of very well been built into whatever it is we're talking about? i know im getting into Ian territory, but i could very well go on and on about nintendo realising peripherals for games that don't need them and we will only use once. sounds like apple with theiPod to me though.
For the sake of being compared to Ian, those really arent my feelings regarding to nintendo at all, i was simply pointing out that someone could argue that comparison while we start spreading rumours of a nintendo/apple partnership. (you know some poeple will take everything Starxxon said as fact)
I'd like to dedicate this next little number to all those out there, don't be shy now I know you're out there, who are afraid of how successful a brand can be with toiletry connotations.
The only people who would care about such a faint relation are Nazis. What the hell do I care that any person at Nintendo uses an Apple computer? As long as Nintendo's game consoles remain the opposite of Apple's products (many and good games, low price, good performance) I don't care. Only if the Wii was like an Apple computer I'd abandon Nintendo in a heartbeat.
And hell, Apple has nothing meaningful to offer to Nintendo. Nintendo doesn't want or need a "home entertainment center", they make a console and Apple can't help them with that. If you want style over substance and media over games, go with Microsoft or Sony. If you want only games go with Nintendo.
I don't mind the computer thing, and I probably shouldn't have used your quote in my last post. But I do mind when Nintendo gushes about Apple and says they want to emulate Apple. We know who Nintendo is and what they offer. However, many people will think that with the association, Nintendo products are indeed like Apple products. And this could turn people away who are biased against Apple, but had no strong feelings about Nintendo previously.
