Title: New Super Mario Bros. 2 DLC Level Packs Detailed
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on September 27, 2012, 10:52:13 PM

Nintendo reveals the first set of downloadable levels for the hit 3DS title.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31916

In the latest Nintendo Direct video announcement from Japan, the company has announced new details on how optional level packs will be available in New Super Mario Bros. 2. The DLC feature was announced earlier this year, but no other details were known until now.

The first set of DLC will be grouped into three Coin Rush packs, each containing three levels for the game. The first pack emphasizes the Golden Mario ability to generate massive quantities of coins; Mario is also shown blasting through large groups of bricks with his golden fireballs. The packs are accessed through the Coin Rush menu, but you'll only see the option to view these new levels if SpotPass is activated for New Super Mario Bros. 2.

The first Coin Rush level pack will become available in Japan on October 2nd and is priced at 200 yen. The second pack will follow at the end of October, and the third will arrive in late November. We do not yet have any information on the date or pricing for other regions.

$2 per level pack is a pretty good deal.

I would be willing to pay $10 for new boss levels and up to $20 for a Giga Bowser boss battle.

Hush yer mouth... they may hear you.

We're getting a decent deal here, don't start giving them ideas.

So for $6, you get 9 new levels.  In comparison, the e-Reader cards for Mario Advance 4, were $6 and only contained 5 new levels.  So we're getting a better deal on this games DLC levels then the last Mario game to include DLC.

DownLoadable Content? I guess you technically could call the e-Reader downloading.

Looks cool. I don't know if I'd get these, but it's nice for people who want more.

Stevey you're still alive!

I'm cool with this. I will try it out myself. Once we hear that the sales are decent I think it will be 100% guaranteed DLC for Smash 3DU.

Far overpriced.

At this rate, a full $40 game would contain 60 levels. That seems reasonable, at least on the lower end of it.

So... what happened with the N.A. Nintendo Direct? Can't seem to find that one online anywhere.

But there is suppose to be an interesting Reggie Interview with GTTV somewhere.

I would call you a "cheapass" but that would be an understatement.

This was cool and all, but not worth it's own Nintendo Direct.....was expecting more like a new puzzle or special mii or something since it was supposed to be 3ds related.......

It's very interesting to see how closely Nintendo can toe the line to Day 1 DLC.  Especially since the DLC just seems to be a few rom-hack levels for a game that, from my perspective, could have used a lot more development time so it didn't rely so heavily on content and assets taken from previous games or ship without single cart multi-player or multiplayer that basically simulates 2 people playing on the same screen, even though there are 4 screens between the two players.

It'll be interesting to see how prices for future DLC will be.  Fire Emblem's DLC was $4 per character, while NSMB 2 is $2 for a pack of 3 levels.  I wonder if since Fire Emblem is a smaller franchise that's why the prices were higher for its DLC since there's less of an audience vs something way bigger like Mario.

If that's the case then hopefully we can expect Smash Bros and Mario Kart to have cheaper DLC prices as well.

I don't think three months is "close" to Day 1 DLC. But thanks for trying.

Holy crap, really? I thought all DLC were like its own different game!

So it's 2:52 PM now (in Arizona), and we still haven't seen the NOA Nintendo Direct.

Was IGN providing false info? Or were they lying?

Yeah, because its perfectly reasonable for them to give you about 12 levels and an entirely new map for the same price of three levels. Logic!

Okay, again, personal insults are not okay. Disagreements and corrections are fine; telling someone to eat poison is not.

More like they're charging the price of 12 fully levels, an entirely new map, and new boss for just three simple ROM-hack style mini-mode. SM3DL had 16 worlds which boils down to about $2 per each world. Each of these levels shouldn't be more than 25¢ and that's already giving them a decent profit margin.

or for the price of just 3-4 "packs" you can have the entire game SMB, SMBIII, or SMW with far more enjoyment and levels.

What in the crap is this suppose to mean? That SMB1, Lost Levels, and SMW is only 12 levels long? That they all cost $12? What the hell?

I think he means something like Super Mario Bros. 3 has (I think) 90 levels and costs $5 via Wii Download.  That's roughly six cents per level - vs. this 67 cents per level - over ten times the cost. :)

I'm really glad Nintendo are finally embracing this model. Personally, I could really do without more NSMB, so I won't be picking these level packs up; but it's still reassuring to see Nintendo move forward with this type of thing.

You guys are comparing a 20 year old game to one that is barely 2 months old. Ok then. Comparing prices like that is futile.

If someone hasn't already played SMB3 then I think it's a pretty fair comparison, at least in terms of entertainment value. For someone who hasn't already experienced it, a game on virtual console is like any other (the fact that it's old does of course mean that it can be sold cheaper, but for the person making the purchase it's a value proposition like any other).

Yeah, but how many people in the demographic for this DLC haven't played those VC games? If you own a Wii and haven't played Mario 3, unless you bought the system yesterday, why the hell haven't you done that yet?

Have you used the Wii's Virtual Console? lol. The obscurity and inaccessability of the Wii shop is one very good reason why such a situation might occur. I have quite a few friends and family members who have owned a Wii for years and for whom the Wii Shop is a website on their Wii where they can look at tiny images of old video games, lol.

However, several of these people have already downloaded games on eShop because it's simply more user friendly. So they're in the market for DLC but have not played Super Mario Bros. 3.

That aside, the example I gave was of course largely theoretical. For the purposes of comparison it's always better to contrast two things with everything else being equal. With everything being equal (in other words assuming that you've never played either) SMB3 is a better value proposition than this DLC level pack.

That's not exactly a controversial statement. Hell, I would argue that Super Mario Bros 3 at full price is better value, but then again it's one of my favourite games.

You know what? That got real pedantic real quick.

Yes, but the 30,000 coin limit and lack of online leader boards for every level pack is a downer.
