Title: Red Steel 2 Megathread!
Post by: ShyGuy on July 03, 2007, 11:33:31 AM
THIS IS IT BABY MEGATHREAD IS GO

Red Steel 2 is the upcoming followup to the commercially successful, critically panned Wii launch title of November 2006. Instead of being a direct sequel, it is a "spiritual" sequel bringing back the basics concepts and not much else. It's a first person shooter/brawler that Retro studios advised on, so if you can't forgive Ubisoft for their crappy games, do it for Retro!

You play a mysterious stranger in the town of Caldera. Caldera is a modern day alternate reality city they call a mashup of Reno and Tokyo. You have a katana and you have a six shooter. Time to mess up some hockey mask wearing gangsters.

Highlights:
- Motion Plus exclusive, it's bundled with the game.
- Single Player only
- Cel Shaded Graphics, they look amazing.
- Interactive world, you can shoot up the surroundings, hit or shoot open doors, and crack safes. More mini game like events are promised.

It's coming March 23rd 2010, you better buy it.

Will this thread also include the enormous amounts of disappointment found in the first game?

I'm more than positive that Red Steel 2 is going to do circles around the first game. I mean, I know they just wanted to get the game out by launch so bad that several dozen features didnt make it in. Although I'm going to rent it first since the first one was, well...really rushed. I havent traded in a game in a long time and both Red Steel and Raving Rabbids just felt that...once Nintendo's stuff comes along nobody would want to even touch either of these titles...

Hopefully Ubisoft can change my mind but...just have to wait and see.

Didn't they say something that amounted to a tacit admission that the first game sucked? Yes, I know it's probably the PR machine spinning at full speed again, but then again very rarely does a developer admit "our game sucked, please give the sequel a chance because we promise it'll be better".

Yeah it did.  Fundamental promises made by the developers were undelivered on.

What was promised: "Control like the Wii needs great AI"
What we got: AI that is so dumb it opens fire when it is standing behind an explosive barrel.

What was promised: The decision to spare lives of your enemies will get them to help you win
What we got: A "special move" system that was ineffectual because every move was impractical to use in battle, and access to a gun vault that really only stood to arm me between levels.

What was promised: Tight sword fighting
What we got: Wii-elbow

This game needs to be markedly better than the first.  Just adding online play wont make it anything more than lipstick on a pig.  The sword combat engine needs to go.  Just replace it, the current one is not good.  The AI needs to be smart, because the game was far too much like a shooting range.  The interplay of saving and killing needs to be more important, and I think it all but demands the addition of lackeys from amongst the ranks of those you spared.

To clarify:
If you kill a low level boss his goons should be in you way for the remainder of the game.
If you save a low level boss he should dismiss his goons, or if he joins you turn them against the primary enemy.

Joined characters may join you on the next mission, and their presence (assuming they stay alive in fire fights) could trigger events that fundamentally change how levels play out.

It was a launch game from Ubisoft Paris, the same people who made XIII. *shrug* It makes sense that we got what we got when we take that into consideration. That team really needs to mature if they want to create a definitive FPS experience, on the Wii or anywhere else.

I think the game will be great, and the only thing that really needs to happen is for Ubisoft to figure out a good control scheme for the Wiimote.  And a new sword fighting system.

I would completely ditch special moves in the sword fighting.  Very rarely are sword fights going to be won by a special move.

Instead I would have 6 basic strikes that you learn.  Each Strike can attack or parry other attacks.  Some attacks will go through different Parries and still hit, so you must learn to see which attack the enemy is pulling off.

These attacks can be easily pulled off by simple gestures and button combinations.

Horizontal Slash
Vertical Slash
Horizontal Slash A
Horizontal Slash B
Vertical Slash A
Vertical Slash B

Companies forget you don't have to have tons of sword moves to make the swordplay fun.  You just have to have Sword play that balance, and actually works.

Finally for an interesting Special you could allow sword wielders to Hold A and B for a blocking stance.  This stance can put the sword in a block position, and you can move it around the screen.  During this you can move the sword to parry bullets from hitting you.

Now throw these elements into an online FPSer with 8 player games and you have yourself a great online experience.

Shy Guy:

Ha.

I see what you did there.  I see it.  Oh yes, I read it too.

What I mean is, Sword duels aren't going to be won by some special secret sword technique, but from basic understanding of positioning timing of basic sword strikes.  So in a game like this, it would be easier to just have a smaller list of moves so that you can have great control and a well balanced (though perhaps not as deep) sword fighting system.

As for Street Fighter you are right.  I rarely defeat my opponents with Dragon Punches or Fireballs, but with a nice flying air kick into a combo.

And Chun Li is hot...so is Cammy.

It was easy for me, too.  But it was boring.  Circle, dodge or block attack, randomly wiggle remote around to get 3-4 quick hits in, repeat.  It'd be more fun if the controls were responsive enough to make attacking feel more deliberate.

the sword fighting sucked until my second play-thru. After that once i better understood the special sword attacks i was able to enjoy the sword battles a little more.

it still wasn't perfect but got me thru some of the more annoying battles much quicker, like the ones against the ninjas. It became more offence than defense.

Matt and Bozon mentioned Red Steel 2 on their Wii-k in Review podcast.

Quote

Red Steel 2
- Rumours that the game experienced a troubled development cycle and has been shifted to a different team.
- It's coming and we will hear more about it in the near future (probably in a few more months) - but don't expect a mind-blowing game.
- Indeed, Matt expected to hear more about the game in 2007, but it never happened - this may provide validity to the rumour.
- There are more Ubisoft games coming to Wii.

I'm not a fan of those games you mentioned, so their absence isn't as heart-breaking to me. I did, however, like BG&E and the world it presented (though it was a bit heavy on the green shading) but Ubi's iggnorance will cost them heavily. This game deserves to fail, not because Ubi has treated us stupidly, but the artowkr is just horrid. Realism does NOT work in BG&E.

But... I'm not humorous enough to mock it. Pro Daisy? Sure. Bill Aurion? Oh wait, he left... ;_;

We need Bill to come back, seriously.

I really loved Red Steel one.  I played it a few months after launch, so I was used to the whole "aiming" thing  8).  There was some really cool stuff going on that could be beefed up.  I liked that you could approach the mission order however you wanted, and would like to see more of that.  There was some great set pieces, the rabbit thing and the air duct shoot out are really standing out in my mind.  There was a lot of real effort in that game, even though it seemed rushed.  What I loved the most was that taking dudes down was just so easy.  It was so easy to drop people with the pistol, 20 minutes in it was all headshots and I felt like a real action star!

I hope this one fares better, but development team switch makes me uneasy.

That's what I meant. Apparently, the first concept was not working at all, so they scrapped that one and started all over again.

And I HOPE it gets delayed. The problem with the first one was that it was rushed so it could be ready for launch. The concept was good, all it needed was more time in the oven.

True, that should have been more than enough time to fix the gameplay, especially if they used the same engine as the first game.

Now, I admit I forgave the game's flaws because it was rushed to launch but had a lot of great ideas. However, if the second game still shows the same flaws as the first game there's no excuse there. Fans are very sour with Ubi (as well as every other third party developer), so they need to make this game as good as they can.

Magazines are the worst place to break this game's news.

We remember how the first game was presented (mag), and how it subsequently TURNED OUT.

If you download the table of contents PDF on the nintendopower.com website you can see the character art. Looks sort of like a future western type of thing in a way.

I just finished The Drawing of the Three (second book in the Dark Tower series by Stephen King) so that art looks particularly badass to me.  Huge Roland vibes (except for the katana, but eh).  Here's to hoping the game doesn't suck!

It's nice to see an actual character design.  The original game's best effort was those tattooed guys, only because they looked a little less like guys in suits.

If by some small chance Ubisoft gave this game the development it deserves it will blow The Conduit out of the water. It's not nearly as generic, I'd assume it'll have split-screen like the first one, and it has a legitimate reason to be on the Wii as 1:1 sword fighting isn't possible anywhere else.

Oh yeah....

Analysis.

- Western theme obviously, it actually makes more sense with the odd fantasy settings of the discarded RS2 concept art. It had mine carts and such.
- The metal decals on his coat look like circuit traces which implies a futuristic setting. Could be something else though.
- Protagonist is a male with dark hair and mid-to-light colored skin.
- I can't tell what pistol he is carrying but it looks modeled after a Colt Patterson revolver, maybe a Remington service revolver?

Unconfirmed NIntendo Power reports from GAF

Quote
The article on Red Steel 2 is mainly a 7-8 page interview with 9 screen shots and about the same of concept art. Half is a preview describing a series reboot and the other half is an interview with the Art Director (Stephane Bachelet), Lead Game Designer (Roman Campos Oriola) and Creative Director (Jason Vanderberghe). They have the game running at 60fps, the game is set in the fictional dester town of Caldera described as Tokyo meets Reno. The basically rebooted when they saw Motion Plus and decided to go a different direction with the game.

The Metroid Prime 3 lock-on was just an idea of mine, not anything official. It would allow you to be sword-fighting a guy and have your movement be based on him while giving you the freedom to take shots at any other enemies that might be nearby. I think the game could definitely work in first-person, but a third-person RE4-style behind-the-back camera could be good too.

I mean, there's GOT TO BE something wrong with this game, right?  They did a reboot in the middle of devving, which proves things were already terrible from the start.

No multi is a real bum. Odd that a system known for filling a party role is getting burned with lack of multi. First no local in Conduit and then RS2, our possible local FPS fix, has not to speak of!  :P

Emo? How the hell is Rosalina emo? Compared to the massive bitchness Kojima made Meryl Silverburgh turn into (sry can't resist MGS4 hate lol), Rosalina had better character development and carried herself in a more intelligent way then Peach did.

Daisy needs her own game. Good fan fiction *READ: the 10% that is good* make her an awesome character. She's a flower that can be in my garden anytime. ;D very creepy undertones

Daisy needs her own game.
Wrong wrong WRONG! The characters of the Marioverse deserve to have their own games in the order of their appearances. Donkey Kong got a spin-off first, then Luigi, then Peach. Okay, so there are many characters who got their spin-off out of order (Toad, Yoshi, Wario), but that isn't right! Next in line is BIRDO! He's long overdue! And it wouldn't be some generic platformer either. It would be titled "Shopping With Birdo", and it would be a sort of puzzle game where you have to buy clothes, accessories and such to match Birdo's unique tastes.

It would be EPIC.

Large? No. And he isn't a playable character. He's just one of the NPCs you have to help grant the wish of. He gets "wrongly" imprisoned for using the woman's restroom, and you have to help prove his "womanhood". The less said there, the better.

...And yes, Birdo is a large reason why Captain Rainbow is never coming to North America.

Rosalina is a dude, following the footsteps Birdo set forth many decades ago.  He's 7-ft tall, a chest flatter than Doshin the Giant, has a deep voice, and hides the Galaxy's biggest secret beneath his skirt.  Doesn't take 240 Shine-Gets to figure this out.

Well Red Steel reminds me alot of Fable's devlopement.  Alot of promises were made and it didn't live up to the hype.  Fable 2 was tons better than the first so Red Steel is on my wait-and-see list.

I hope for better AI and the ability to dual weild (not with the nunchuck) but actaully gameplay for twin remotes.

Loved that Cover pic too.  I would if they'll make a poster out of that (my Killzone one is a bit fadded and could use a replacement).

Imagine dual-wielding Wiimotes with each having a M+ attachment. PURE CONTROL AWESOMENESS!

Amazing. But that can't happen 3rd parties make nothing but crap for Wii so I'm awaiting Ian and Broods opinion on this because they KNOW this for a fact. ;)

Seriously though even IF this isn't gameplay footage (I think it is mixed) it is a great trailer.

I like the sound of it. Makes me think of a western themed 1st person version of No More Hero's Sans-blood.

Seeing video I can see how not having blood can leave the actions a bit less satisfying but I'll wait 'till I see more video and try the game before denouncing it for such a design decision.

I think of it this way. Red Steel one had tons of potential but was rushed and had some sloppy execution mainly in the controls With almost 3 years to refine it along with Wii Motion Plus I think it will turn out well.

Remember they had to restart the project from scratch with another team so it's only be about half of that. Your point still stands, I believe, but it wasn't a complete 3 year cycle. Probably close to a full 2 years by the time it comes out.

Good job with this pretend leak, Ubi.

Sorry, but that's not game footage.  Those aren't in-game graphics and Wii doesn't run in HD.  This trailer is more carefully fabricated than the original Red Steak trailer.

Nice of you all to still keep your hopes up.

Nice of Ubi to finally apply high-budget deceptive marketing on Wii games that aren't Rabbids or end with a Z.

EDIT: Oh and they better put money towards the Wii, since it's the only thing making them money!

It doesn't look like more than the Wii can handle, remember we're talking about two Gamecubes taped together, not two N64s. Maybe the texture detail is a bit high but I wouldn't say it's impossible to do. The geometry detail is fairly low, the environments are fairly simple, just a few bleak walls and in the town zoomout you don't see a lot of geometry detail either.

I do find it curious that they cut away from the game footage whenever the sword would hit the other guy, either they want to hide the lack of blood or they just haven't implemented the alternative hit effects yet.
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread! (soft launch)
Post by: NinGurl69 *huggles on May 05, 2009, 05:24:02 AM
The resolution bugs me.  I don't expect textures and object edges to sharpen from a 480p game output that's upscaled to HD (introduces scaling interpolation/blur) then downscaled and recompressed to YouTube falseHD (compression artifacts and additional smudging).

The core degree of detail of the environments and characters are in the realm of Wii gaffix, but the sharpness of what's supposed to be a *Youtube* video suggests otherwise.  The details have a finer presentation than Wii games I see in person.  And with it coming from Ubisoft, I'll leap and cartwheel to skepticism.  If you can imagine tracing the steps it took to generate this footage, it's like the Wii assets were running off a 360 or PC.
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread! (soft launch)
Post by: Nick DiMola on May 05, 2009, 06:56:54 AM
I'm with Pro, there is no way that was being output by a Wii. There was upscaling going on there to make it look so smooth.

It still looks like the sword fighting is arena based, so fail anyway.

Ubi had good intentions (don't show the not-a-game-yet concept stuff to the public) but poor execution this time around (bad PR security over the footage material).

It's apparent why they labeled the trailer as "internal use only"... It's like the first time they "showed" Red Steak, but with a twist.

When Red Steak footage was first shown it came in the form of a concept trailer using pre-rendered footage (the tattoo guy fight).  When new trailers came and people got hands-on time with it, the game obviously missed its mark.

From my newfound understanding, Ubi really didn't want the world to see this Steak2 trailer, cuz they didn't want to repeat what happened last time (or did they?  hype helps sales).  LOLZ, SO MUCH FOR THAT.

This quote sums it up beautifully:

"Since that trailer was leaked, expectations for the game are at an all time high and unfortunately Ubisoft will most likely never be able to meet them."

Some new details

Quote
- some aspect of leveling up your character
- gun and sword combos
- “RS2 is tightly focused on intensely physical first person sword fighting, with gunplay a secondary option”
- hold Z to lock onto enemy
- hold down C and swing to block, vertical and horizontal blocks
- switch lock-on at any time
- screen prompts you if you’re being attacked from behind. Press A to quick-turn in this situation
- many enemies wear bulletproof armor
- not open world
- not a linear game, multiple paths to take
- several hub-worlds
- side quests
- collectibles
- return to old areas with new powers and abilities
-”non-combat use of MotionPlus wont be limited to opening doors”
- boss fights
- production began last summer
- Ubisoft discussing the lack of multiplayer: “We would love to create a multiplayer engine, but not right now. It’s single player because we want to really focus on the core mechanic and as much as we all want to kill each other with swords, it’s not going to happen this time.
- Ubisoft on releasing a multiplayer mode through DLC: “That would be cool. The world has changed, and we can do that sort of thing. I certainly think that would be cool. I’d buy it. But we need to be careful bringing out something that people think should be in the main game.”

This is really starting to sound like a Suda 51 project.

- correct angle and force of a swing are important
- you can enter an options menu that allows you to change the force necessary to perform powerful swings
- flick Wiimote to pull out sword
- quick on-the-fly weapon switching, no inventory
- quick-time event for enemy parry, when the situation comes up
- once you fire a shot, enemies will charge you
- yellow indicator is always present on screen
- there are different weapons, such as a shotgun
- seems that weapons will be upgradeable somehow
- block bullets with your sword
- if you start the game without the MotionPlus accessory, the screen will stay black and the game won’t progress
- Setting: eastern influences mixed with wild-west america set in the near-future
- other areas in the game will also show Asian influence
- art direct flew to Japan and took about 6,000 pics in order to get a good feel for the design approach
- main character is the only one able to accomplish the task of saving the world
- a warlord is the main villain
- more that 15 different enemy types
- no one from the first game returns
- some enemies will have heavier armor and bulletproof vests
- at least 5 bosses
- story development came last, gameplay was first
- 30% linear, 70% free-roaming within massive levels
- 70% huge free-roaming levels in which you receive new missions via radio
- choose the missions you want
- destroy barriers with Katana moves you learn later
- 6 enemies maximum at once
- as of right now, the game has 10+ hours of content

I likes the sound of those points. Especially that it has a lot a free-roaming play. The one thing I didn't like about No More Heroes was how most of the sword fighting was in contained areas and narrow hallways. Your sword was pretty much useless outside in the city.

Lets start with the art style.

The art style is a mix of cel shading and graphic-novel.The game runs at 60 frames per second. The enemy's attire will let you know if he is a grunt or not.

Setting and Story:Takes place in the fictional town of Caldera, located in the heart an unspecified American desert.Set in Modern day times yet gives the feeling of the Old West.A shogun has the town under his control with an iron fist. A wanderer enters the town and tries to set things right.

Controls:Will use Motion+.They plan on having 3 levels of customizable setups.

First is the ability to customize the turning speed and the size of the bounding box.You can also choose between auto and manual lock. Also they are planning power recognition. Will have destructible environments. Can switch between gun and sword on the fly. There won't be multiplayer. They said it will detract from the single player and Motion+.

Miscellaneous:You can block bullets,Enemys range from pipe wielding thugs, armored swordsmen, and lighting fast ninjas.Your playstyle will vary depending on who you fight. There will be finishing maneuvers.Hold Z down after you get the enemy down to a certain point then preform your swing. One of the finishers NP saw was the Swordsman held his opponents forehead and drove his blade through it.No Blood. They want to get a T rating and don't want the player to get distracted.

It's too late now, you ruined it! ;)

- They have been working on this game for three years, so it sounds like they started this right after they finished Red Steel, which was developed in ten months.

- They are using a completely new engine with drastic dynamic lighting as opposed to Unreal Engine 2.5 which was used for the first game.

- The art style was Inspired Leinil Yu's artwork on the New Avengers comic book.

- The game is not set in the future but modern times. They describe the city of Caldera as Tokyo meets Reno.

- Moving is important in the game, you can face up to five enemies at a time and they will attack you while you are dueling.

- The game maps are described as arenas or set pieces placed around among areas with no enemies, instead of hallways with kill rooms, a typical FPS map style.

- They use the plural guns and say different weapons in the game, so I think there will be more than just the six shooter.

- Unlock areas as your skills/reputation increases (ala Metroid)

- They describe using the gun as hitting the B trigger and you shoot wherever the reticule is on the screen. This seems a little odd, you would thing there would be a unholster button.

- They are going to allow adjustment of the turning speed and the size of the bounding box so shooting controls should be much much better.

- As much destructibility in the enviroments as they can

- Music is eastern and western mashup.

- Closest gameplay mechanics they can compare it to is Jedi Knight.

The tag team of ShyGuy and Maxi bringing you all the info on Red Steel 2.

In all seriousness the controls remind me somewhat of a mix between Metroid Prime 3 and The Conduit.
Red Steel 2 is in between those two as far as controls go. Motion+ is an added bonus.

YES! I loved those games. Dark Forces 2 Jedi Knight was one of my classic games to play on 'The Internet Gaming Zone'. Good times.

I actually think they should make a new Jedi Knight game for the Wii. That special control mode where you directly moved your mouse to swing you saber in a 1:1 way would be really great to translate to M+.

I'm even more sold on this game than I was before.

Yeah, playing like Jedi Knight is exactly what I wanted to hear, and I would also like to see a Jedi Knight game on the Wii. Basically everything you said, except the Jedi Knight I played was the second one.

No, it was Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Academy. Just because it came after Jedi Outcast doesn't mean it was a direct sequel.

Btw, does anyone have any idea if the dev team of Red Steel 2 has any members in common with the team that did XIII?

edit: wikipedia sez they were both developed by Ubi's Paris studio.  I wonder if someone there wanted to take another crack at the comic book style after XIII didn't do so hot, or if it's just a coincidence.

Don't care after watching the walkthrough and reading the impressions the game has been up to one of my most anticipated titles PERIOD. Looks like Ubisoft has gotten something right (I mean with visuals like that and locked at 60fps is a huge accomplishment in itself).

I don't think it really matters.  It's not an over the top gorefest like Madworld.  And somehow I actually kinda like that about it, even though I do enjoy over the top gorefests.  It makes the game feel a little more light-hearted.  It's about the action, not the gore.

Not saying that it's a deal-breaker, it's just kind of stupid to call the game Red Steel, if you can't turn any steel...red. I mean a few times in the video on G4 I saw him impale a dude with the sword, no reaction. They should put the Wii's parental controls to work - if they're on, the game is T, with no blood - if they're off, it's M, with blood.

Pah! No blood is merely a graphical difference. No split-screen multi is dropping the ball on an essential gameplay feature. Maybe they should have worried about that instead of trying to get LAN to work since LAN is a no go with Nintendo (unless they wow us tomorrow at Nintendo's conference).

It was the best of the three launch window FPS games in my experience. *shrug* Sure, horrible graphics, but it was quite worthy in an oldschool play-for-fun FPS sort of way.

Sad to see THQ shy away like that. But then again, this was evident since it turns out they canceled a Wii red faction project (if I remember that news right). And in truth, no one knew Deadly Creatures had come out, which is sad. The media just weren't there to give the game coverage, or the PR wasn't there to thrust the game in the media's face, come release. It's a  familiar story, unfortunately.

I'm optimistic that Ubi won't send RS2 out to die. They don't advertise their localizations that much (NMH, Tenchu), but that may be because they choose not to get behind games that they've got a smaller stake in.

Here's a Pro Daisy tip for everyone:  Instead of waiting for a stream on IGN, just view the page source, find the high quality .FLV file link, and enter that into your browser to save the video and suck their bandwidth dry, and I mean 400KB/sec+.  It'll cost IGN more money, and you'll get your movie faster.  The FLV file can be played in a variety of third party software like Media Player Classic (w/ ffdshow).

This workaround also bypasses the age verifcation thingo and any video ad they stick in between.

I just refresh the page to bypass the ads. And I can enter my age faster than I could look through the source code for the FLV file. I'm just saying I don't have any issue of the videos loading and I would think if the movies load slowly through their Flash player, they'll still load slowly by DLing directly. When I do have issues, I just pause the film and come back to it later, its still loading in the background.

My only concern with this title is what happens to the enemies after they are killed. I don't mind them dissapearing, but do that have to do it like an old Streets of Rage game? It looks way to tacky, other than that it looks awesome.

Oh yeah and when the nija guy stabs the bad guy, it didn't look like anything. Even something Soul Caliburish or zelda like would have been better than no type of animation around the stab wound. You know like the blue or red electricity type wounds?

Still great though.

You are my hero.

These guys are really influenced by the Metroid Prime series

A quote from an interview http://wii.nintendolife.com/news/2009/06/interviews_red_steel_2s_jason_vandenberghe

Quote
NL: With that in mind, did Nintendo give you a lot of support to get to grips with MotionPlus?
JV: Oh yeah, they were great. We got our first MotionPlus a few weeks before it was officially announced, and we were like "now we can do it!". Nintendo were great though, they gave us loads of early libraries for MotionPlus and really gave us a lot of support. In a wider sense we worked very closely with the guys over at Retro Studios, and the producer of Metroid Prime came to work with us and gave us a lot of insight into how they handled things.

And another http://wii.nintendolife.com/news/2009/06/interviews_red_steel_2s_roman_campos_oriola

Quote
NL: I asked Jason whether he saw Red Steel 2 as the console's flagship FPS, like Halo or Killzone. What's your take on that?
RCO: (pause) Wow, you're asking the difficult questions now! (laughs) I don't see it as a straight FPS like those games, it's a mixture of FPS and a brawler, like Jason said in his presentation, but it's not direct competition because it's on the Wii, not those other consoles. We were more influenced by Metroid Prime 3, but with our close combat gameplay and in a semi-realistic world.

So that means that whatever Retro has been secretly working on is heavily reliant on M+, since they are apparently the goto team to help other devs with the tech. Wonder what it could be.

Maybe they are working on the new Zelda with M+ support if they are considered an M+ goto.

Nice to know Nintendo has been supportive of 3rd parties like this.

Wateched the "new" walk through videos at IGN. Same demo from E3, but the developer explained the economy system a bit.

- You collect money from destructible items, safes, and taking side jobs.
- Safehouses are where you can buy stuff
- You can buy weapon upgrades, different abilities and attack combos and temporary buffs like a shield style power up.

You know, I liked Red Steel.. Why?  Because I treated the game like a LIght gun game and I took the sword speed and sped it up.. the result?  nice quick actions.  While still restricted to the swipes, the sword actually swung when i did for the most part.. so.. for a light gun game (which it really is in my opinion) I liked it.

Now RS2, that looks really really good and with inspiration that it seems to have, i will buy this one.

So RS1 was an expanded light gun game. That's an interesting comparison.

I think they are keeping the sword moves canned because of Motion Plus. From what I understand, M+ only stays 1:1 perfectly for a short period of time and then it starts getting out of sync. So if you're holding your sword at a 90 degree angle it shows it at a 75 degree on screen.

At first I thought he was actually being sarcastic. I'm don't think so now, but I wonder where he heard/saw this.

Maybe they could just have you periodically resync it some how. Like everytime you complete a bounty/task/mission/whatever there could be a shooting/parying minigame that covertly recalibrates it. Or perhaps the game would atribute it as fatigue and you have to rest in an inn and that is where you recalibrate.
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread!
Post by: NinGurl69 *huggles on July 01, 2009, 04:28:22 PM
It's always being resynced cuz you're often aiming at the screen since it's an FPS, or did people forget.
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread!
Post by: Stratos on July 01, 2009, 04:31:51 PM
I didn't know that was how it resynched. I thought it was something that could be a bit more intrusive. If that;s the case then there shouldn't be much of a problem.

I'm actually feeling the need for it a bit in Conduit. If I aim to far or do a melee attack the IR loses it's connection and I cannot aim for a second or two. Typically that is when Kraken kills me :P I can't handle a lot of close combat fighting.
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread!
Post by: NinGurl69 *huggles on July 01, 2009, 04:36:27 PM
Aim too far?  Melee attack?  Are you standing up like the actors in the Red Steel trailers?

Resort asks you to aim at the screen and press a button before sessions, for a reason.
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread!
Post by: Stratos on July 01, 2009, 04:38:12 PM
No. When I turn and try to turn really fast I'll point too far and the IR loses its aim.
I'm talking about in Conduit also, to clarify.
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread!
Post by: ShyGuy on July 01, 2009, 04:52:29 PM
Okay, here is how I came to my supposition:

In the Red Steel E3 Demo, the game was calibrated by placing the wiimote updside down on a flat surface for a few seconds at the start of the demo. I would think this would be to determine a 90 degree angle along the.... Y axis? The Ubisoft guys said that was all that needed to be done for M+

Anyway, people who tried Wii Sports resort mentioned that after they had played the sword fighting game for awhile the swords would be less than 1:1 and their position on screen would be a little off kilter. I think IGN estimated that the Motion Plus kept 1:1 synchronization for about 10 seconds.

Now I'm guessing that since Ubisoft doesn't want to pause the action every 10 seconds they are fudging the on screen depiction of sword handling a little bit. It makes sense from an artistic standpoint too. It keeps The protagonist looking cool all the time instead of looking like a spastic sometimes.

NOTE: Plenty of hearsay and assuming from me in the above paragraphs.

Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on July 27, 2009, 02:19:46 PM
For all those counting on some RS2 action this holiday season, you better start making some new plans.

Ubisoft just announced that RS2 has been delayed to 2010.

I'm hoping its so that they can fix the sword mechanics in the game, because motion gestured M+ support kinda defeats the purpose and completely misses the point.

Sheesh, what notable games are left that are releasing this holiday season?  I can think of the two rail-shooters (Darkside Chronicles and Extraction); Silent Hill: Shattered Memories; Boy & His Blob; and New Super Mario Bros. Wii...but that's about it.  Sure, it's leagues better than last year, but it's still pitiful (especially if you aren't into "survival horror" or spin-offs of said games).

Well, at least they are delaying Red Steak 2 for a purpose...

But 2010? **** Ubi, you're going up against Bayonetta(sp?) AND Mario Galaxy 2. You better not release that game during their release windows (though to be fair, the former is a PS3/360 game, but...). Don't pull a Sega.

Super Monkey Ball 2 got killed by Mario Sunshine. NiGHTS: JOD got killed by Mario Galaxy. The first one is more tragic though, because both are good games. Yeah yeah, I suck for liking Sunshine.

That realistic graphics may have been good on Xbox & PS2, but the more powerful Wii isn't powerful enough to handle realism, so stylized graphics are the way to go.

In my seating arrangement for IR Cursor Aiming Games (RE4, REUC, MP3, FPS), I rest bottom of my hand (imagine i'm holding the Remote or a pistol) on my lap/thigh.  This creates an anchor+pivot point for me that aids in comfort and stability when aiming for long gaming sessions.  I never ever aim in those games by holding the Remote in the air.  In my hand, the Remote is short enough such that the port end don't really collide with anything when I tilt to aim while resting on my lap.

With MUTTON PLUCKS EX plugged in, the whole unit is too long, and the M+ block just digs into my lap if I try to rest with the bottom of my hand as usual.  Effectively, I've lost range for pivoting and tilting.  To get around it, I have to elevate my hand to regain the range I need or rest my elbow up somewhere or find some other less direct way of attaining a comfy resting position.

This is a world away from playing something like Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of Fist where I held the controllers behind my head or hanging over the sides of the chair because I'm sitting back comfortably in a reclined chair.  Once IR aiming gets involved, my seating becomes directly related to my controls.

That is a good point.  The comfort is relative to how much time is spent with precision IR aiming.  It's pretty exclusive to Conduit.  Grinder, who knows?  FPS design will need a clear distinction of needing M+ for major tasks or completely excluding it.

That video picks up before where the last 2 we've seen left off.

The 1st video has you getting dragged behind the bike, then your in the sewer.
The 2nd video has you just out of the sewer and just getting into to town. It ends with you meeting the boss with the hammer.
This video (3rd video) takes the end of the second video and the boss fight from the E3 footage and puts them together. The only new thing I can see here is that they actually finished the Boss Battle in this video.

It also look like they are a little more lenient when it comes to angle of your sword to block.

That actually looks really fun! I'm still trying to figure out the slow motion leaping strikes. But at least the enemies don't "blink" like an old arcade game anymore.

Shooting and sword slashing really looks like a good time, and the graphics look like next gen graphics, at least as far as the Wii goes. So far this and Galaxy are the only things that really come to mind that look like a step above the GameCube.

It means that they would rather use the 360 controller for the PC to test their latest build of RS2 on their PC based Wii development kit than to recompile it and transfer it over to a Wiimote enabled system?

I mean, you wouldn't want to use a Wiimote setup while sitting at a cramped desk enclosure in an office would you?

Speaking of new videos, how about a QTE interactive cut-scene? (http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/article.php?id=15382)

You know, this is actually shaping up well. It's weird that this is the second part of the Red Steel series. From what I can tell, it has so little to do with its forebear, it could easily pass as its own separate entity - and many people don't have good things to say about the first Red Steel, so it isn't the best idea to associate with it.

Setting that aside, Red Steel 2 may be the unexpected hit of Q1 2010.

IGN has a hands on preview. If anyone cares to read. Sounds pretty good.

For some reason I can't seem to get direct links any more from there. www.ignwii.com But here is what I found most interesting.

Quote
The Wii Motion Plus noticeably spices up the swordplay. Not only does it recognize horizontal and vertical swipes as well as direct stabs forward, it recognizes subtle and hard attacks depending on how fast you're swiping the Wii remote. In fact, there are enemies within Red Steel 2 that require hard attacks to break their armor before you can take them down proper – wimpy slashes won't have any effect until their shielding is gone.

The sword swinging isn't exactly 1:1 like it is in Wii Sports Resort, but this is something we knew about since the E3 demo: the way the game's designed, you slash the remote and then the game calculates what you did and represents it as an attack a split-second later. It seems like something like this would be ripe for lag, but it feels pretty natural and you really won't even notice the millisecond between controller slash and on-screen attack.

Now I wish I could say that it was flawless, but it isn't. In my early playthrough some attacks were represented as stabs and diagonal slashes couldn't decide between horizontal or vertical. And the finisher moves – the gesture attacks you make after an enemy's been weakened – are clearly using old-school Wii remote motions because they can be faked in a different direction than what the attack requires. For example, there will be a "downward slash" gesture icon over a weakened foe, but you can activate the finisher by swiping upwards – it's only looking for motion in these instances, not the specific direction.

But even though it's still not a perfect Wii Motion Plus product, it is still a very fun game with good, tight control where it counts. The lock-on technology keeps the action snappy by keeping your character pointed to the closest threat, so you can take him down without focusing too much on camera aiming. The developers implement some decent tech to keep players looking forward even when pulling the remote away from the screen to swipe the sword: the reticule will shift from its "aim" target to a simple dot when you're slashing the Wii remote, locking the camera so that before and after an attack the viewpoint doesn't stray from the action.

This is technically a Red Steel 2 interview, but there is hardly any talk of RS2 until like the end of it. I honestly don't know where to even post this since it really doesn't have too much to do with RS2 but I it isn't a 3rd Party Shame moment either even though it kinda addresses the topic. well anyway, here you go.

Jason VandenBerghe Creative director of Red Steel 2 speaks on Mature Gaming on Wii (http://videogamesdaily.com/interviews/201002/red-steel-2-interview/)
Quote
VideoGamesDaily: There’s been a lot of noise in the past few months about whether “hardcore” gaming can succeed on the Wii. I’m sure it’s something you’re asked about all the time.

Jason VandenBerghe: Yes, the great hardcore gamer jihad! You’re right, I am asked about this quite a lot. So, do you want the short answer or the long answer?

VGD: Your choice!

VandenBerghe: I think many developers and fans want to pose the question as ‘there are no hardcore players on the Wii’ or ‘there are hardcore players on the Wii’. This question is not interesting to me because I’m not making a game for hardcore players, I’m making a game for gamers, which includes hardcore players – they are welcome to play the game as well, no problem, I’m a hardcore player myself!

I don’t treat gaming as a religion, I treat it as sort of a way of life, and my main passion. So when I see people trying to outflame each other about whether you’re hardcore or not to play on the Wii, or whether real gamers can play on it, I just don’t care. The questions I have are: is the game fun, and does it have something interesting that I can’t do on another console.

I mean, that’s the reason I’ve bought every game that I’ve ever purchased, it was something I wanted to play and it wasn’t available on any of the other consoles I have. This is a Wii game, so if you want to play it you have to have a Wii – but you know, I bet you probably do have a Wii. Because there’s a lot of Wiis out there! Even if it’s unplugged and in the closet collecting dust.

The thing that I think has been scary for people is to watch these kinds of games come out and fail – MadWorld, Conduit, Dead Space: Extraction, all these games – but I think in each of those cases there are other circumstances, different in each case, that make it really tough to draw a real conclusion.

It is easy to make a self-fulfilling prophecy of this and say, ‘oh, hardcore gamers don’t exist on the Wii, so I won’t buy one or I won’t make games for the Wii’. That’s completely possible, the games industry could decide to do that. But I’m not doing that! I’m making a game for gamers on the Wii, pretty much. And I’m offering, I think, a completely new experience that you can’t get on any other title, and hopefully one that’s fun.

To me, that’s the magic combination: it’s got to be fun, I can’t get it somewhere else, and I want to play it.

VGD: Good mix. I think the other side of the coin is that the ‘death’ of mature gaming on Wii is somewhat exaggerated. I haven’t got the sales figures in front of me, but some of the titles you mentioned performed quite well. MadWorld, for instance…

VandenBerghe: MadWorld did fine. You’re the only dude I’ve ever met who knows that! Exactly! If you paid attention to Sega’s press release, you would know that Sega understands what apparently no-one else in the gaming community understands, and that is if you put that kind of ultra-violence in a game, you’re going to sell 10 per cent. Period.

So Sega did what any responsible publisher would do and they moderated their marketing budget accordingly. They didn’t have to make commercials for MadWorld because everybody who wanted the game already knew it existed, because they had been marketing the crap out of it on the internet, where all of the hardcore players are who wanted to play it. It’s not an accessible game. But it sold like 200,000 units, which was quite satisfying to Sega! The Conduit was… I already have Halo, so why am I going to play that? The game was great, but yeah.

And with Dead Space: Extraction – again, fantastic, but a lightgun game? On a platform that has Umbrella Chronicles and House of the Dead? In the same year? I mean, already available on the same shelf? That’s tough, that’s a tough sale. How many lightgun on-rail games do you really want to buy?

VGD: It’s not quite FIFA or Pro Evo, is it?

VandenBerghe: No! It’s a shallow genre. Then again, are those the limiting factors? I don’t know. I’m no genius, I don’t have the final word on the market in these cases. But I think that it is a leap to take the performance of those examples and say ‘ergo, there are no gamers on the Wii’. I’m a gamer and I’m on the Wii, you’re a gamer and you’re on the Wii – you’re here, talking to me, playing my Wii game!   I’ve been talking to gamers for months and months and months who are playing on the Wii, who are excited to play this game on the Wii. I don’t think it’s worth getting all fired up about.

VGD: Most Wii developers are rather sick of the topic, I imagine.

VandenBerghe: Well, no I don’t get sick of it. If you’re in this business you’d better get used to being asked the same question twice. But I just don’t have any patience for the argument. I don’t have any patience for arguments that create sides in the games industry. I’m not on anybody’s side in the industry. I’m on the side of good quality games. And everyone on every platform can make good quality games.

Had to cancel my Amazon.com pre-order and decided to put it through Best Buy so I can just pick it up from the store. I'm getting tired of the shipping wait with Amazon. Free shipping would result it seems in the game being shipped out around the 29th.

The length of the game has me concerned a bit but there seems to be some extra modes outside of the main single player game so that could extend the length of the game.

You know that's typically an estimate, right? I get mine much sooner and it is shipped much sooner on all of my orders. The only time it didn't ship out early was when the item in question was a back ordered item they couldn't get in the end.

Review copy has been in my hands for a few days. It's really really good.

Still working my way through it, but unless it totally shits the bed in the last part, this is a fantastic game.

The combat is kick ass, and they keep on throwing small wrenches into it. It's not too complicated, and outrageously intuitive. It looks awesome, though there's some annoying elevator-esque load sequences.

It's also kind of an open world game, which I didn't expect. However, it's very linear.

But that's all you guys get for now until my review...or impressions if the review looks like it'll take a little longer.

Red Steel 2 is absolutely an "A product." It's clear that the development team wanted to right the wrongs of the original game and produced an all new design with controls that actually work. There are still some issues, both in game balance as well as wishy-washy motion sensing control, but the awesome style and energetic gameplay are enough to make this one of the top titles on Wii.

I brought up the sword thing since being familiar with katanas, I was disappointed with the control when I played the demo last E3 since the sword didn't do exactly what you'd expect.  They've had a while to improve controls, but recent interviews regarding how they designed the controls leave me worried -- it still seems like glorified gestures.

It's not 1-to-1, but, at least to me, it doesn't have to be. My logic is: If I'm supposed to be a bad-ass swordsman, how the **** could I use 1-to-1 controls? I'm not a bad-ass swordsman in the least. I freaking love the controls in this game, even if they could be labeled as glorified gestures. I still have to swing in every direction while playing, and not just pull a Racquet Sports and swing the same way for a forehand or backhand and get the same results.

While I'm not knowledgeable about technology, as far as my experience goes with Wii, they couldn't get the control they got with MotionPlus out of a regular Wii Remote. It's not tacked on (Yo Rage of the Gladiator! What's up?); the game works because of MotionPlus.

Also, my review's waiting for editing. If you can't tell, it's going to be outrageously positive. I love this game.

True story: I'm actually worried that the same thing is going to happen again when I slightly regret my accolades.

However, every time I read my MadWorld review, I still agree with it (and I read it while writing my Red Steel 2 review, so it's fresh on my mind). I still think it's worthy of a 9.0, and I still think it's a pretty awesome game. Would I play it again? Maybe, maybe not.

Still, it's a 9.0 game the first time through to me.

First hour impressions bullet points!

- Don't skip the opening cut scene it has a different ending than the E3 demo last year.
- Doing the fps part standing up feel a little weird.
- Swords moves are definitely "arcadey" but still accurate enough slice the head off a wooden cutout or juggle a cactus.
- Found a secretish spot in the first area!
- Getting cash is like Link getting rupees. Smash everthing, the leave, come back, and smash some more!

So far this game is SO GOOD.  I think the action and motion is very good and the graphics are absolutely amazing.  It is really impressive what just being able to run at 60 FPS can do for a games look.  As for negs, I would say the areas could be more open world and larger, but I am early in the game so far.  Very impressed, it won't sell great, but it should.

FYI, spreading the word, I bought mine at Costco for $54 for Red Steel 2, Wii Motion Plus and Red Steel 1.  Since I never played it I was quite happy to have it tag along for free.

Excellent game. . I will say though that I've had to play standing up. Can't seem to play correctly sitting down. If I had a different chair that might be different as I have a computer chair and not a couch (Wii is in my bedroom). That's not a problem since it's very entertaining. Only sat for some of the cut scenes while characters were talking. You have to be very deliberate I'm finding with your sword attacks. Taking your time is good thing and the best way to play I'm finding as you have to make sure you do swing correctly if you are doing heavy attacks. You can swing quickly but attacks are light. The video clips they include in the game to show you the movies really help. Pay attention to them.

Downward slashing seems a bit iffy at times I found but then again it could have been me. I felt things weren't being read correctly so I played my TV (flat HDTV LCD like) on a box I had. My TV stand is sort of low. This brought up the sensor bar on top of the TV to the level of my stomach. Things improved greatly. I think I need to go back and pop in EA Sports Active because there were times when things weren't registering correctly and the height of the bar could have been the issue there. The only other game where I've had to stand with the remote so I guess this is why I haven't noticed this problem. Need to pop in Wii Sports Resort as well.

The voice acting is cheesy but in a good way. Music is great. I really hope this does well sales wise and we get a Red Steel 3 and it doesn't get moved from the PS3 or 360.

Sword fighting works best when you target enemies. You can swing while in pointer mode but it causes the camera to go crazy. Locking on to a target (you're able to target others by pressing Z) causes the camera to lock in place and makes sword fighting possible (well it's possible without it so I guess enjoyable is a better word.). Switching between sword and gun is very smooth. The game does want you to do swing the remote correctly as I said. That matters more it seems. You can change the sensitivity too but there are three presets available as well.

My wallet says true dat...but I'm glad my girl appreciates it.  ;D She even offers to pay sometimes. We actually hunt the stores about once a week now to try and find me a copy of Wii Fit Plus. We went today and got a DS Lite and New Mario Brothers for her little sister's B-Day.

Stratos can you be my boyfriend temporarily?

...Depends...what do I get out of it? Endless Ocean 2 dates? ;)

Depends entirelly on how well reviews treat the game and how much it was advertised. Red Steel 1 wasn't great but sold well due to the fact that it was the first FPS on the Wii.

Red Steel 2, however, stands besides Metroid Prime 3 in quality. Hopefully it sells more then MP3, hell beating RE4Wii would be awesome.

ANYWAY, IGN review time go!

IGN REVIEW: 8.6

Quote from: Craigy Waggy's Score Break Down
bolded parts Peachy commentary
8.5 Presentation
The original style and story is something that can't be missed. There are tons of control options to tweak to suit your style. Tons? If he means the sensitivity, then it's valid. Didn't noticed any button options though...
9.5 Graphics
Awesome visuals, running at 60 frames per second. Some of the best seen on the Wii -- passerbys may confuse it for a 360 or PS3 game. ahahahahaha no they won't. Not enough bloom and brown.
9.0 Sound
The atmospheric soundtrack is awesome. Voice acting is appropriately cheesy but it's the music that's king here. At least they aren't shoving one-liners down your throat. Hi Bayonetta!
8.0 Gameplay
The game runs into some issues of misreading some motions, but for the most part we're looking at one energetic action game. You are probably doing it wrong Craigy Waggy. I'm having not problems, and I thank Wii Sports Resort for that.
7.0 Lasting Appeal
It's not super long but it's an appropriate dozen hours from start to finish. Challenge mode extends that. I don't know if I want to mock this or not. I haven't play enough of the game yet.

It's positive post-launch hype talk like this that makes me wish I bought games in stores and not through Amazon. I so want to play it now. I almost picked it up yesterday when I was in Best Buy but I only saw the M+ version and I assumed it would be too late to cancel my pre-order.

I honestly have no clue how well this game will sell. If I remember rightly, the first game sold a million copies. It got some very mixed reviews, though most places didn't score it higher than a 7. I can see people who felt Red Steel had potential buying the sequel, with the hope that it improved upon the game making it great. However, I can also see people passing on the game due to the perceived poor quality of the first one. There is also the Motion Plus accessory to consider, I'm sure people will buy this game simply because they want more games which use the accessory.

How many units did The Conduit sell during its first month? Wasn't it around 70,000? That's my guess for first month sales for this.

The first game was also a massively hyped launch game, as I recall. It's not going to top 20 in the US in March (because let's face it, March is freaking insane) but I think 70k is about right.

Played it for about an hour. Still getting used to the control, I set it too atheletic and found myself being too soft because of past games.

The style is so freakin cool, and when I look at this game I marvel at it like I do Galaxy. It does not look like some old Gamecube game, and I love it! As much as I love and missed games with big presentations like this one, I don't think every game needs it like NSMBW. Just thought i'd throw that out there.

Still just trying to learn the controls, can comment on it more when I have a better handle on things. But when I get into a fight I do get pretty excited and want to stand up and move around. Though I did find sitting down to be just as fun.

So far I'm unsure, I really think they should've left out the breaking **** for money aspect since that makes me feel like I should wreck everything before moving on and that hurts the pacing. There are some parts of the graphical style that don't work well and I think the prerendered intro really moved your expectations too high by the time you actually see the game. Some of the doors look really ugly and since you'll stare at them during loads that's amplified. Doesn't help that the prerendered scenes with Tamiko look weird because of the strong lighting that uses regular falloff, makes her look like she doesn't have the game's style going for her.

Also the store I bought it at charged 40€ for the version with Motion Plus and 50€ without so I have a third Motion Plus now. I picked it over Pokemon HeartGold (25€ instead of 40€) and Metro 2033 (29€ instead of 50€) so I hope it's worth it.

Auto Saves when you do certain events or enter certain areas.
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread!
Post by: ShyGuy on March 26, 2010, 04:17:45 PM
Yeah the autosave is a little odd. It shows the white cube with the red arrow in the upper left corner when it saves. I've usually quit a game after I am in a safe house then buy some stuff and exit. It usually saves when I go back on the street.

I personally like the money collection thing but I wish the kept track of the other things you collect as well. Is there anywhere it says how many sheriff stars or tokens you have collected?

I really don't see what the big deal is. 3 out of 5 stars doesn't mean it's bad, just average, or maybe slightly above.

It's a first-person game with shooting elements, so logically it is going to be compared to other first-person games with shooting elements. Metroid Prime wasn't exempt to such comparisons, nor should it be.

But man, I'm having a hard time remembering ways to kill enemies. I die and die and die, then I just figure out, oh, bum rush em then stab on the ground. Oh swing this way or that way then stab em.

Played a boss who killed me 5 times befor I hit the ground, then I realised, whip around him and hit em in the back.

I like how every review starts off by saying how horrible Red Steel was, but it really wasn't all that bad. Sure it could have looked a little better, and the controls weren't perfect, but it was a launch title, and it was actually a lot of fun to play.
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread!
Post by: NinGurl69 *huggles on March 27, 2010, 04:50:34 PM
It was pretty bad, from the standpoint that the FPS controls were a natural hindrance to my progress in the game (then sold it after playing 3 stages).  It's was NOT something I intended to "get used to"; I figured that enduring it wasn't something that would pay off, like having the control (muscle memory) experience in this game be helpful for future FPS games.  Sword controls were fine for its time, I thought.

Last night, I played some Banana Blitz: Monkey Wars to get some video evidence.

Holy ****, it may be a shareware-level minigame, but the aiming blows Red Steel out of the water.  Sega sent out a game that got First Person controls right 9 months before Metroid Prime 3 appeared.

I haven't touched this game since the day the review went up, and reading what everyone says makes me want to go back to it again.

It's stuff like this that reminds me how I like games that toy with the first-person shooter genre (Portal, Metroid Prime, RS2) than games that are pure first-person shooters. If you expect or are looking for a pure first-person shooter, you should really just play Call of Duty, or get the hell off the Wii. If you want a game where you beat the crap out of a solid variety of enemies with a sword/gun combo and upgradeable moves, this is fantastic.

I should have just put that in the review. Stupid week-later revelations!

I just got the game and I love it right now.

The intro is really cool and gave me a bit of time to shoot things before they introduced the sword.  The sword comibat is great so far too.  So far I've taken everybody down pretty easily besides Big Bill, should I play on hard or stay on medium for now?

The westernish setting is great.
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread!

Medium was suprisingly easy for me, but there are still a few challenging spots. When they throw a ton of varied enemies at you it can get tougher even with all the power ups.

protip: you can buy ammo and power up your bullets by clicking on the ammo boxes next to the guns at the sheriff's store.

Well I just got it today. My only initial complaint is the lack of setting change for lefties. The game is still playable but the sword swinging can be iffy at times. Find myself relying more on my gun just to avoid any sword play slip-ups.

It's already been reported that the M+ drains the battery faster when you leave it in the 'Mote for non-M+ games so I'm sure games that actually use it will take up even more juice. I just cracked open a new quad Nyko charge station since I hate the amount of batteries I burn so I hope it will last a long time.

That's what I've got and I love it, I can use the same batteries and charger with my Wii remotes, 360 controllers, and various remotes and other things, and when the batteries can't hold a charge anymore you just have to buy new batteries and not a whole new charger.

I have everything shipped there since I never bothered to change my address. It also gives me a reason to go visit my mom more often since I always have to pick up my mail. It also works better with larger packages(front door and mail box is not really visible from the street) since you can't hear the mail person knock at the apartment unless they knock on the window.

They mentioned the blonde in an interview. They tried replacing it with animations, but they found she was the easiest way to convey the movements.

Also, this game is more than okay. You have to get into the combat like a Ninja Gaiden or a Devil May Cry.

I'm sure i'll like it, today I've been juggling the following games:

wii sports resort
red steel 2
call of duty: modern warfare [reflex]
super princess peach
and mushroom men

after a 2 week absence from my Wii.

The fact that i was rushing thru those forced tuturiols probably put me in the wrong mood to enjoy the game.

This game gets better and better as you go along.  The new moves really keep making the combat better and better.  I just learned the matador and the shot.  The shot is probably my favorite.

I also like all the hidden things they have around like the Sherrif Stars, it reminds me of looking for the items in Metroid.

The tutorials were fairly annoying (especially having to repeat a move 3 times at the end) but they don't take that much time and the rest of the game is fun.

Does anyone have the pre-order codes for RS2?

edit:
Ok, I just have to say that I've been playing this up to the second training right now and I already miss twitch based gaming. I don't necessarily want to have to swing my whole arm. I like that it's somewhat accurately tracking the direction of my movements, but i really don't want to do wild movements that could put the surrounding furniture or people in harms way when simple but accurate movements would suffice.

This is gonna take some getting used to.

Quit whining, you knew what you were getting into when you forfeited the dead presidents.

This game weeds out weakness.

I saw an OH-BEESE man play Wii Sports Resort Swordplay at a Fry's store.  He casually waved his wrist like he was wielding a garden hose, and got whooped at stage1.  What an utter failure.  Bring some passion to the table, move your ass.
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread!
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on April 06, 2010, 03:15:49 PM
But I have to swing like I'm actually trying to kill someone or my M+ is not working properly.
But either way, it seemed to track much easier in WSR than it is here.

I'm used to movements from the elbow to the hand(M+) vs just wrist movement(basic wiimote), but this is requiring full on movement from the shoulder and the nunchuck cord just isn't long enough for that. I'm gonna end up tying my wrist into some sort of knot with the cord if I'm not careful.

edit:

It's weird that it responds fine when in non combat situations, but acts up when I need to fight, more specifically the downward strike.

Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread!

sitting down. It works fine when I'm not in a combat situation and then when enemies show up everything becomes difficult and nothing registers. I just beat the Hammer swinging boss, but it wasn't thanks to sword thrust (not that I wasn't trying).
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread!

Hmm since you are sitting down I think that the range of movement may be a problem. Whenever I played the first Red Steel or No More Heroes I had to stand up to do the sword fighting.

Are you sitting in a chair or something that may restrict your movement of your arms?

that's the first one I found ;D

As far as where I'm sitting. where I'm sitting is fine, the controls work fine when I'm not in combat and then all of a sudden it won't right and I have to swing harder than usual to execute something that worked fine just seconds ago.

I can work around it, and so far the game looks good. But hopefully this issue disappears later on.

Really? There were so many more obvious ones before that point. I think that was like my 5th. And the point of the pic was that the sign looks a bit like Samus' helmet. Didn't Retro help RS2's devs out with WM+ for this game? If so, I wonder if that was merely coincidental..

Just beat the game on normal a few days ago. It was not too difficult, but slicing up some baddies with all of the moves was pretty sweet, especially combinig them to do some nifty finishing moves. I am definitely going to play through this again on a harder difficulty and I just havea few questions for anyone who has beaten the game on Ninja Mode. Is it pretty challenging? Or should I try to make it difficult for myself by doing things such as not upgrading any of my stuff?

Attention: I now rank this the best third party game on Wii Yes, better than RE4 Wii.

I just finished the game and found it really enjoyable all the way through. There are about 3 and half open world areas with straight up action levels in between. Tons of items to collect for money, and tons of things to upgrade. The enemies are varied and force you to use your arsenal of attacks.

Sadly, I don't think this game will do well. It requires to much effort for the fat. lazy soft-core gamers who call themselves the hardcore this generation. It took me 18 hours to finish the game and I played every minute standing up. Part of me wishes I played this on hard instead of medium.

Spoilers:
There was one challenge I didn't do in the game. In the mines, there was a posion filled chamber with a safe in it. I couldn't crack the safe before my health expired.

The end boss threatens that there are other clans coming for your sword, but you tell him off and break the blade in half in his stomach. Setting up for a sequel?

I give it a 9 out of 10

I don't know exactly how far I am into the game (just got the tommy gun) but I was thinking that I  should have played it on Hard too until I got to Payne. I must've fought him about a dozen times before I finally beat him. I almost beat him about half the time, but when I go in for a slash, it would hurt him and he wold just choke slam me, call out some new guys and it was over. Had to adjust my head on strategy to parry strike strategy, but that's when I realized that playing it on Hard probably wouldn't have been the best idea for me (did I mention that I played it just fine for about 2 hours today while laying down ;)).

I'm really digging this game so far though, but damn do I have so much money. Just before my last purchase, I had almost $230k from breaking damn near everything that didn't require a bullet, and some of the things that did.

I didn't find Payne THAT hard, Shinjiro is much more of a pain since the bastard has hardly any openings and when he has one he'll close it fairly fast with a bunch of fast attacks so overestimating one will lead to taking a few hits.
Title: Re: Red Steel 2 Megathread!

I was being bullish and charging in trying to go for the quick kill. It almost worked the half the time but somehow my power thrust would do no damage and he would gran me by the throat and kill me.

It's not that he was hard, it's that I wasn't paying smart, I was just rushing in head first without thinking. One time I power thrusted him about 8 times in a row without him getting up and it almost killed him, so I kept thinking I cold just power attack my way through it and be done.... I was wrong.

The only other time I've died was when riding the truck during the quicktime events. There was one part where it just said push A, and I pushed it immediately on several attempt and it just wasn't registering, so I kept dieing, it almost got to the point of frustrating.

Everything else so far hasn't been hard at all, but I'm glad I didn't put it on hard since I'm still having issues with the damn thing not swinging some times. Just regular swings that work when not in combat are not working while in combat. He will just stand there while I'm swinging away or trying to do a finisher move when the enemy is down.

Payne slapped me around for a while too.

I think you can change the difficulty any time you want.  The difficulty is part of the profile and you can change before you hit continue so it shouldn't matter if you started on medium because you can up it to hard.

edit: I was wrong. I didn't even notice ALL the ammo boxes that you can upgrade too. I hardly use the gun except for shooting things out of reach and "The Shot" finisher, but now I have a reason to go collect more money.

Man, the final boss was a pushover with upgraded Tiger (the only Kusagari move I used regularly) and carabine (didn't even have more than 1-2 bullet upgrades for it and it still took about 20% or more off his health bar). Is there some kind of New Game + (you know, start over with all my upgrades)? I got a ton of money on the final level and there were no shops in it.

Generally guns have their use and you should have them ready in case **** hits the fan. When it gets hard enough that you can't just leisurely kill everything with the most profitable attacks you'll want to have your gun be useful at killing stuff.

It saves automatically after you do certain things or enter/leave =certain places at certain times. You'll see the little icon pop up in the upper left corner to let you know when that is happening. It makes me uneasy about quitting and turn the game off since I'm not always sure when the last time the game saved itself.

This is really one of the best games I've played in a long time.

I'm really glad I someone here mentioned the bullet upgrades because I hadn't noticed them yet and it helped me catch it while its still early in the game.  Unlike other people here I use guns all the time.  They are great for taking out the machine gun guys, wounding and stunning enemies, and finishing off the dearmored guys.  You can even use them on the big hammer guys.
One of my favorite uses is on the armored guys.  They jump at you and you unload a shotgun in their face, it knocks them back and stuns them letting you rip apart the armor.

I just beat Shinjiro on ninja and he really beat the hell out of me again and again.  My winning tactic was to attack with guillotine and stab him but if I used tiger unload two shotgun blasts into him at point blank.  The new shockwave attack you get looks really cool.

Because the games are so similar that one of them would definitely take a bite out of then market share of the other, right?

Four-player co-op>>>>>>>>>>single-player only. Borderlands would rape RS2 in sales if it had been on the Wii. I would also be interested to know just what's so "bad" about Borderlands, given that it was received extremely well by both critics and consumers.

It's sound logic really.

I went to a furniture store with my girl yesterday to look for a kitchen table. She saw one that she liked, a sort of large for the available space 3 piece sectional with 4 or 6 chairs. I was the one that had to break it to her that the price of the table was $750 dollars(waaaaay above the price range).
To which she replied "Well I don't need the middle piece...."
and I said "If only they could remove the middle piece and take the middle number with it."

Pardon me, didn't read the whole thread, so if this has been discussed already at length, I do apologize.  Is it a common glitch in this game to fall out of the game world?  I had that happen to me this weekend and stared at the screen for a while to see if it would ever resolve itself.  It never did so I had to re-start the whole thing.  I never did manage to duplicate it, but falling into an endless void was certainly unexpected.

Well, coming off the utter disappointment that was Fragile and the surprising amount of fun that was Wii Sports Resort, I decided to take the plunge and give Red Steel 2 a fair shot.  I'm a couple chapters in (I just reached the "Lower City"), and I'm actually having a good deal of fun.  The swordplay tires my arm out after a few hours and the enemy AI is fairly poor, but the combat's surprisingly fun (especially the finishers, and I have a soft spot now for performing the Eagle to throw a guy up in the air, and then dash up and slam him back into the ground or shoot him full of bullets on the way down).  I really wish my character could jump on his own without a prompt, though, as it just feels like something you should be able to do.  More story outside of the mission descriptions and the occasional cinematic would be nice as well, though those cinematics are gorgeous (surprisingly decent voice acting as well).

I had to go through a fair amount of trouble to get the game, though.  My original plan was to trade in Fragile and another game at GS, and then get the game used.  So I found a GS that had it Used that was on my way home from work, and I stopped by after work.  Turns out that that copy was being "held" for a week because the person who traded it in did so for cash.  Would have been really nice to know that ahead of time, or for them to simply oh...I don't know...not have it listed as in their inventory on the website.  Then they directed me to another GS that had it used that was a little out of my way, but still on one of several routes home.  Turns out their copy has no original case or cover, just the generic GS one (by the way, according to that cover Red Steel 2 is a GameCube game).  I told them there was no way I was buying that, and just ended up buying it new.  Yeah, it's $17 more than I wanted to spend on a game I was really hesitant to get, but at least the overwhelming amount of that didn't go to GS.

You get a bit more variety in enemies as the game goes on.

*beats the game*

What the...THAT'S IT?!  I haven't seen an ending that anticlimatic and lazy in years: just a "The End" screen after defeating the Final Boss (which was a simple matter of using The Tiger to stun him followed by a volley of explosive rifle rounds in his chest).  Bleh...

Other than...THAT, I rather enjoyed the game.  But what a blatant setup for a sequel...

Clearly Ubi put their best story telling team to work on this game.

I think the issue is mostly that the Tiger is just effing overpowered. Directional blocking? Don't bother, use the Tiger. Waiting for an opening? Don't bother, use the Tiger. There's only one attack in the game that you can't deflect with the Tiger (The Dragon) but there's only one enemy who can use it and he doesn't use it nearly enough to be dangerous with it.

Have to master all the moves before unlocking the Flying Carradine.

To be honest, I think the moves that are overpowered are The Reaper, followed by the The Crush.  Yes, the enemies can guard against them, but only the Ninjas guard against them consistently and even that can be worn down through repeated attempts.  And when you do hit with one of them, you pretty much have an instant opportunity for a finisher, with a pretty high bonus for using them as finishers.  The only enemies these don't work against are bosses and the mini-gunners (I hate those guys)/hammer guys.

The Tiger is overpowered, but I really only ever used it against especially hard enemies (the advanced Ninjas) and bosses.

I used the Tiger instead of regular blocks but I think what's also pretty nasty is The Storm, turn your back to an enemy, wait for the red icon, bam! Instant kill.

I've only found that working against the weakest enemies.  Everyone else blocked when I tried that.

Really? The red icon is a finisher, can instakill even the best ninjas when I use it.

Wow I just finished this game. It is fan-fucking-tastic.  No More Heroes has NOTHING on this sword play. By the end of the game your such a badass, your like dancing through sword fights. ITS GREAT. I was also amazed to find myself actually using all the moves too. @_@.  (Well okay, all but like 2)

That and the cinema scenes were just excellent. Congrats to the Red Steel 2 team on making such an excellent game.

Also, I liked to mention just nicely streamlined the game play is. Its excellent. I started using the little press A dash move every where because if you are in the middle of a dash and you get to something it wants to you to press A on it automatically starts that action. Its excellent. The gun switching on the fly is also amazing.

Great game.

I'll definately be picking it up when the price drops, which I'm surprised hasn't happened already.

Maybe that's a sign that the game is having decent sales still? The prices seem to drop once the games sales slow.

Or maybe they got the hint from Nintendo to leave the price high longer and people will continue to buy the game at that price?

The game hasn't even been out for two months. So I don't think there will be a permanent price drop yet.

Just started/finished the game myself and have to say it isn't anything great.  Minus the combat the rest of the game is pretty damn lame.  Story/plot?  Crap, they did have a nice western theme going but didn't do much with it.  The NPC, both the acting and the script was laughable at best and where the hell is everyone else?  Pacing--again it was off.  It's pretty damn linear and the few side quests they had didn't add much, rip down a few posters, find some gold, beat XXX of thugs, ect.

Also I hate lame endings, you don't even find out what happens to the chick, it just ends.  I think I would take NMH2 over this, at least it had it's humor.

At least it had a better story than Devil May Cry.

I was going to respond, but Pro did it more succinctly and to the point than I could ever have hoped to.

So minus everything in the game, the game would be pretty lame?

Interesting.

Pretty much yeah, it was a disappointment to me, love the early art style and read the early interviews where the developers talked about the much improve plot but saddly the cake is lie.  I really don' t need a novel but at least tell a story from begining to end.  This one told 1/2 a story and it didn't even tell that well.  It seems like no game can get it right on the WII, either you got story (Dead Space:E, Silent Hill) or you got gameplay, why can't I get both?

It's better than the orginal, I just wished it was what the developer described it as.

So what's a recent game that had the perfect ratio of story and gameplay for you?

WHY?

WHY DID HE JUST USE DEAD SPACE ON-RAILS AS AN EXAMPLE?

UGH. Caps just aren't good enough to express a wall-banging moment.

Minus the combat the rest of the game is pretty damn lame.

Red Steel 2 is like... a first person Bayonetta.

Minus the one-liners and ass shots. And the main character is a man.

Pro's answer wins this thread.

"Minus the one-liners and ass shots"  But I like those parts :).

I actually liked Bayonetta, ranks up there with other action games like NG or DMC series.

"perfect ratio of story and gameplay for you"  Well just started GoW3 and so far I'm in love.  Also Alan Wake (only a few hours in) sits well with me.  Some games just have to much "bleh" for story for my taste, I'm looking at you MGS4 or even Xenosaga III (after the first game the writters left and the story basically died with that).

Hopefully, I'll get RDR sometime this month--I have alot of titles on my plate I need to finish but man is that game tempting.

To throw in much better modern games that really blend story (and/or atmosphere) well with gameplay, I'd submit Bioshock; Batman: Arkham Asylum; Uncharted 2: Among Thieves; Valkyria Chronicles; Dead Space; and Bioshock 2.  Some of those did it better than others, but looking back over the experiences as a whole they all worked really well.

Sorry, I tried to think of suitable Wii games to mention in that list, but I can't think of any that have blended the two elements particularly well.
