The   integrity of the system, coupled with a broad-based voting population of AIAS members, makes the Interactive Achievement Awards the most credible, respected and recognized awards for interactive entertainment software.

Video game awards are total crap. The Oscars are usually mediocre, but these are so ridiculous it hurts.

I'll stick to media awards, thanks.

Actually, I found a dealer in england that sells functional Red9 "Broomhandle" pistols for about $1200 or so.

However, you can't have a lynchmob without pitchforks.

So what is the exact reason RE4 wasn't included?  I've heard everything form some weird release date rule, to Capcom doesn't give the AIAS money so that they can be in the club...

Also, apparently Blizzard did something bad too, because it doesn't make much sense that WoW isn't in the MMO category...

I know that's an attempt at humor but c'mon, we all know why RE 4 wasn't on the list...

Its a pretty soild list despite RE 4's abscence. God of War was the next best thing. Guitar Hero is simply amazing. Nintendogs was nice choice for a winner; the PSP's time for accolades hasn't come yet...

Next year should be interesting for 2 reasons 1)Its a clean slate for the big 3 2)It will be televised.

God of War wasn't anywhere close to as good as DMC3 so I'll totally disregard this list as hogwash.

God of War the next best thing?  What I played of it was rather boring and generic...

BF2 won best first person action game not adventure game.  Definitely my favorite multiplayer game online.

WoW came out in 2k4.

And RE4 came out too early in the year in 2k5 which hurt it's chances.  (see movies and academy awards.  if you want an award then release later in the year.)

Capcom is not part of this or something like that, right?

Whoa...really Resident Evil 4 should be up for GOTG(generation), with that being said, God of War is really really good. I don't think it should be marginalized by the fact that RE4 is better.

For those that don't know the AIAS Awards only apply to due-paying members of the Academy, and Capcom is not one of those companies.  Members also have to pony up the money for each game they want nominated in each category, which is why you see some games conspicuously absent from certain categories and some categories with only one nominee which of course goes on to win the prize.

I was there a previous year when it was televised, and it wasn't pretty...

I've got one more:

Not released in Germany: God of War (P: Sony Computer Entertainment America, D: Sony Computer Entertainment America-Santa Monica)

Sony babbled something about not wanting to hurt their family friendly image (i.e. "OMG SONY SI TEH K1DDIE!"). That's why you didn't release Katamari Damacy or what?

How is BF2 are better firstperson adventure then fear? Its not even first person....

BF2 isn't first person??? I'm not sure what you were playing instead but BF2 is first person even in vehicles. Also BF2 has just plain FUN. Seriously, FEAR is just another corridor-runner with a few different story elements and a godawful multiplayer mode.

The award says First Person Action, by the way.

To be fair to the AIAS, this system of ponying up money to be nominated is standard fare. I might be completely off-base here, but from what I understand pretty much every person nominated for an Oscar has to be part of their respected guild (Screen Actors Guild etc) to even be nominated, so this isn't anything new.

Re: money stuff and capcom - disenchanting, no?
Thats about par for these things tho. But seriously what irks me the most - has anybody PLAYED BF2? I keep searching for a bad review, becasue its surreal.. I just can't believe I'm playing the same game thats getting Game of the Year awards all over the media.
Even the places that are too small to get junkets and money hats from EA are STILL in love with the game.

Bothers me, thats all.

I'll smile when (not if) I finally read about EAs inevetable implosion.
grrr..

Have YOU played BF2? Because I don't see you complaining about any specific elements, almost as if you've seen it only from the outside. What did you hate about BF2? Sure, the server browser sucked, the singleplayer functionality was butchered and it had some bugs but once you started playing it's just insane fun. The ranking system keeps idiots somewhat in check (sure, they can drive over your mines but all that nets you is a point penalty). It conditions people so much I've played on servers without TK punish and people behaved nonetheless. I think most GOTY articles mention that while many of the parts around it sucked, the gameplay itself is great and isn't that what we always say is what really matters in a game? If you're going to complain about helos, have you tried vehicle mounted MGs? That does quite some damage so enough people doing it can take down the helo.

Now I wish they hadn't butchered the bot support like that so I could play with a few friends against a team of bots... I know there are workarounds but I'd prefer an official solution. And all that expansion nonsense is annoying but you can just ignore it.

I dont mean to bring this off subject any more than it has, but forgive me this once - YES, I have played it, quite a bit. I think I had expected it to be a rocking first person SHOOTER. The more I play it the more I understand that was a mistake in my own expectations. Weapons in the game aren't weak per se, but its almost pointless to fire them. For one thing, they've programmed in some awful bullet dispersion cones. It hurts me to think about all the times a person is in my sights and it still takes three shots to hit them. "Realistic" physics in an FPS, I'm used to that. Think F.E.A.R. or my beloved (and dead) Infiltration. I'm programming some myself. But in BF2 the weapon's inaccuracy isn't represented in harsher weapon kick, its just randomly decided where the bullets go. And the shotgun.. what a hilariously weak gun.
I'm sure if you "grow" your character some it'll fix the accuracy up a bit, that would be suiting of EA. It wouldn't really matter tho -
With the surplus of mounted weaponry, tanks galore, helicopters, or jets, its all but pointless to NOT have some sort of explosive equipped at all times. Driving and blowing things up is the primary objective here. Which I don't doubt is fun enough. If this game won awards in some kind of "sandbox" genre, I wouldn't complain. But there are several FPSs out there that outclass this game, assuming the greatest criteria in judging an FPS is in varied, inventive, and/or exceptional quality weapon, level, and game design, balancing, weapon programming, writing, art direction, sound engineering, and technical accomplishment. Only the last two categories would have BF2 even near the top in my book.

Sorry if you disagree, but I was really looking forward to BF2 and feel insanely let down by the direction they took it. Heres hoping Quake Wars gets it right.

RE4 > God of War
Shadow of the Collosus > God of War
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory > God of War
God of War was hardly the best game of 05...hell, for me, it wasn't even in the top 10.
