Yoshi's Island 3 Looks Incredible and I Think HAL Is Making It

Alex comments on the only Yoshi game coming out worthy of the phrase "epic."

Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness. I know I got angry at Yoshi's Epic Kirby Epic Yarn, but Nintendo more than redeemed itself with an honest-to-goodness, legitimate Yoshi's Island game. With this and Zelda 3DS within the span of 40 minutes, I really have to wonder why they didn't hold these games for E3 and what they have that can top this.

First off, it looks to be one baby Nintendo character, no Artoon (they're defunct), and a beautiful new art style that continues the clay and pastel look of the original games. With Shy Guys, egg throwing, and collectibles, the best part about this game is that the joyous spirit of the original (one of my favorite games ever!) remains all too intact. But the question remains: Who is developing it?

  • Artoon is dead
  • Retro Studios has their Wii U game in development
  • Next Level Games just finished Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
  • Intelligent Systems is busy as all hell
  • 1-UP Studios is way too small to make it themselves

There are more developers, but these are the first ones that come to mind. As far as I'm concerned, there's the obvious possibility of an EAD studio (which is a wild card) but there is also the curious possibility of HAL Laboratory.

Of Kirby and Super Smash Bros. fame, HAL is the perfect fit in almost every way. Not only does the new Yoshi's Island have an art style not unfitting to the Kirby universe, but they have been unusually quiet on 3DS. Being no stranger to handheld development, they developed Face Raiders, co-developed the Kirby DS games (and made two by themselves if I remember right), and they have a portable history dating back to the original Game Boy. But above all, who doesn't want a Yoshi's Island game from the Kirby guys?

But man, we got Yoshi's Island 3. We got Yoshi's Island 3.

We got Yoshi's Island 3!

Talkback

I actually think 1-UP Studio (formerly Brownie Brown) could be co-developing it.

Hate to break your bubble but it's more then likely Arzest is making the game.  Arzest was started by the key members of Artoon and has a lot of their former employees as well.  They still have a close relationship with Nintendo, so I'd say they're the most likely since the company is made up of people who worked on the Yoshi's Island DS.

HAL is more then likely working on a new Kirby for the 3DS or Wii U, or maybe even both like.

Arzest is a real small studio who havent done anything more significant than a few minigames in Wii Play Motion and a bit of collaboration not unlike 1-Up (Arzest's staff is only slightly larger). While that may sound like they have been quiet on 3DS until now like AlphaDream, the production values on this game seem to be way too high for them to take on a main development role.

Meanwhile, HAL is known for working on multiple titles at a time, which is possible given their size. Furthermore, most of the Kirby DS games were collaborative efforts that were made while other games were coming out.

All we have is speculation of course...and my desire for a top notch developer to be put on a top notch game.

I really miss the sprites. The graphics aren't bad, but like the new Zelda and Mario and Luigi, it just feels like the graphics are lacking some of the charm of their predecessors. Maybe if they were cel-shaded, especially Zelda.

The artstyle is closer to Yoshi's Story with polygonal Yoshi and enemies and everything else having hand-drawn, patchwork look.

Have you noticed new music?

It's great to see that this announcement got some people excited.

As for me? I really don't care for the Yoshi's Island style of gameplay, so this new entry in the series probably isn't for me. I will defer to those people that actually enjoy the original to explain why it's one of their favourite games ever.

What I will say though, is that for me the one redeeming feature of the original Yoshi's Island was how good it looked aesthetically. From what we've seen of this new game so far, I don't think it looks as endearing. Perhaps I've just been spoilt by the likes of Epic Yarn and Rhythm Heaven: Fever. Stylistically, I thought what this trailer showed of the art style was a little underwhelming.

Maybe that's just me though. As I say, the art style of Yoshi's Island was probably the only reason I played it, so I might be putting too much stock in it.

The original Yoshi's Island is brilliant and timeless.  This YI looks like complete ass.  Does literally NO ONE remember the revolting game that was Yoshi's Story?

Iwata doesnt consider it part of the series, as he said this is the 3rd game in the Yoshi's Island series.

The game looks better in video, and I hope it will get better.

It's interesting we are essentially getting 2 Yoshi games so close to each other. One in the Island series and one that looks to follow Story. Except for the massive amount of collectibles in Island stages I wonder what's going to really differentiate them? Hovering/flutter jumping, tongue lashing, egg throwing will be present in both for sure I wonder what's going to be the hook?

If I was 12 again and heard about this, It would be a pleasure over load. Now I just hope they don't F em up like the last 2 Yoshi games. Though I found Touch and Go to be a fantastic -shoot for the high score- type of game.

The Wii U Yoshi looks more to be a spiritual sequel to Kirby's Epic Yarn..  Meaning it's not going to play anything like the previous Yoshi games just like Kirby's Epic Yarn played nothing like the previous Kirby games.  Kirby couldn't even float or absorb enemies powers in Epic Yarn, so I wouldn't expect Yoshi to have all his traditional moves either.  Yeah I'm sure they'll be some tributes to the Yoshi series here and there like Epic Yarn did for certain levels but for the most part I expect it to be it's own thing again.

It'll basically end up being like Return to Dreamland and Epic Yarn were for the Kirby series where both games will be quite different since one will be an actual Yoshi game while the other will be a completely different platformer that just happens to contain Yoshi for marketing purposes.
