What I Played in January 2012

I've got ambitious plans that will probably not be finished.

I've tried in the past to create a weekly log of what games I played. I usually began it at the beginning of the year, and updated it weekly until about February or March. It never made it past that. So, here I am, putting this concept in the public eye. I'll rattle off what I played throughout January 2012. Remember, this is more for me than for you, but feel free to play along. I'll understand if your January log is incomplete.

  1. Swapnote (3DS, Download) - This was the first game I turned on in the New Year. After January 1, I opened it once during a recording of Connectivity. Swapnote is dead to me now.
  2. Bionic Commando (3DS, Virtual Console) - I have grand intentions of going back to this surprisingly decent Game Boy game. It takes Bionic Commando for NES and boils it down into handheld form. It's frustrating from time to time, but I enjoyed what I played. I'm about halfway through.
  3. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) - Sporadically throughout the month, I played this with friends. My wife and I raced together one night. Another time a good old-fashioned Mario Kart brawl broke out among friends. I stand by this being one of the best games in the series (for me).
  4. Madden NFL 12 (Wii) - What better way to soothe the Packers' loss than to march through a season in Madden? I think I only made it through Week 10 or 11, but my team's flawless record helped me get over the giant egg my beloved team laid in the playoffs. Madden on Wii might be my most-played game in 2011.
  5. Pikmin: New Play Control (Wii) - One night, I played this for like a half hour.
  6. Mario Kart 7 (3DS) - I checked out the SpotPass and StreetPass stuff I accrued since December. I like this game, and I'd love to get back online with it sometime. Community Night, anyone?
  7. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) - One night, I felt like beating the Deku Tree in Master Quest. So I did.
  8. Mighty Switch Force (3DS, Download) - I've been methodically working my way through this game. Still need to beat it completely, but it's not like it's going anywhere.
  9. Cave Story 3D (3DS) - It's Cave Story. In 3D! I only really like playing with the sprites, because the new models blend in with the background too much for me. I'm not very far in this, but I intend to go back to it.
  10. NFL Blitz (Xbox 360, XBLA) - An unsung amazing game. NFL Blitz is an early candidate for, no joke, my favorite game of the year. My friends and I have gotten insanely competitive over this, leading to near fights, epic tournaments, and rage.
  11. Trine 2 (Xbox 360, XBLA) - Played the demo of this. I want to get it at some point, but I might wait for a Steam sale.
  12. Okamiden (DS) - Got this on Target clearance and played about an hour of it. I got stuck somewhere and put it down. Maybe I'll go back to it? I don't know.
  13. WarioWare (3DS, Virtual Console) - I occasionally break out my favorite ambassador game as my "comfort game."
  14. Tetris (3DS, Virtual Console) - Like WarioWare, this is a comfort game.
  15. Mario Kart: Super Circuit (3DS, Virtual Console) - I turned this on one time. Played it for half a race. Turned it off. I hate this game.
  16. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) - Cleared out my StreetPasses. StreetPass really does the trick of getting me to come back to games I beat or put down.
  17. Skyrim (Xbox 360) - I only put a few hours into this, and then put it down. I realized I'm never going to play it again, so I sold my copy. I've got my eye on Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, though...
  18. Zen Pinball 3D (3DS, Download) - Got this when it came out on eShop and put some time into it before I realized I suck at pinball compared to my 3DS fans. I'll likely play it from time to time, but my pinball wizard dreams are dashed.
  19. Shinobi (3DS) - I wish I could say I was clearing out StreetPasses, but that's not the case. I just like playing this game. It's a fun 2D action platformer. Reminds me of Ninja Gaiden for NES, which I adore.
  20. Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360) - I had this grand plan of 100%-ing this game when I got it back from a friend I lent it to. I played it for about 20 minutes and then watched all the secret stuff on YouTube. I'm weak and not (as much of) an achievement whore anymore.
  21. Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64) - I hooked up my Nintendo 64 and decided to play Super Mario 64. I never owned this game for N64, and that my game collection has merged with my wife's, I do. This game is freaking magical. Go watch those speed runs with jaw agape.
  22. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii) - Had to show off the retro level to my wife. Somehow, I just wanted to go back and play Super Mario 64 after this. The last 20 or so stars in Galaxy 2 are mostly stupid.
  23. Mutant Mudds (3DS, Download) - Mutant Mudds came. Mutant Mudds saw. Mutant Mudds conquered. I love this game. It hit all the right buttons for my platforming love. I wish it was a little quicker, but speed would alter the style so much.
  24. Shadows of the Damned (Xbox 360) - Played about two or three hours of this. Ended up getting cut short because I started playing Sakura Samurai for review. I regret that. This game was looking to be much better. I need to go back and play more of this.
  25. Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword (3DS, Download) - Read my review. I was very nonplussed by this game. It really let me down.
  26. Mario & Sonic Demo (3DS, Download) - Awful.
  27. Paper Mario (Nintendo 64) - I played the first hour of this. It's super slow. I want to go back to it, but man, it starts off so slow! I hope the 3DS sequel hits the ground running.

DUDE!!! You SOLD your copy of Skyrim?! What are you on crack? Just kidding I love that game but I've put it down for now in favor of Resident Evil: Revelations for the 3DS. This game friggen ROCKS!!! Capcom did a great job with it and I would HIGHLY recommend it for ANY Resident Evil fan.

Nope, just not a fan of super slow-paced games with shitty combat. :P

I get the appeal of the game. I played Oblivion to death. Skyrim just didn't grab me.

Zen Pinball 3D (3DS Download) - Played a ton of this, battling NWR staffers and forumers for high score supremacy.
Swapnote (3DS Download) - My quota is more than half full, though people are using it less and less. Sent some cat photos.
Radiant Historia (DS) - Picked this up when it was on sale at Amazon and finally put a few hours into it. It's nice, but equipment not changing across timelines doesn't make sense.
Nano Assault (3DS) - Played a few hours of this, but it's not as engaging as I'd hoped.
Mutant Mudds (3DS Download) - Played a couple hours, but got bored. Don't understand the hype.
StreetPass Mii Plaza (3DS) - Completed Find Mii II's Main Quest and went on to the Hidden Quest.
Mii Maker (3DS) - Imported gold pants Resident Evil characters.
Nintendo Video (3DS Download) - Some of the experimental music videos are cool.
VVVVVV (3DS Download) - Played several of the extra levels and tried to perfect the first time trial.
3D Classics Kirby's Adventure (3DS Download) - Played through about half of the game.
Pushmo (3DS Download)  - I got bored of this one after a while, but it was good to go back. Cleared the NES sprites.
Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon (DSiWare) - Played a few daily rounds after I was able to transfer it to my 3DS. I probably won't play it again now that Zen Pinball 3D is out.
Resident Evil: Revelations Demo (3DS Download) - Not my thing.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games Demo (3DS Download) - Played it once, which will probably be it, though I am interested in trying the Wii version.
Mario 3D Kart (3DS) - Played to beat a couple of StreetPass time trials.
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror (3DS Virtual Console) - Played a little bit of this after playing 3D Classics Kirby's Adventure to see the difference in controls.
Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) - Cleared my StreetPass queue. I plan to work on time trials for this.
3D Classics TwinBee (3DS Download) - Trying to see if anything had changed after the silent update.
3D Classics Xevious (3DS Download) - Same as above.
Kid Icarus Uprising (3DS) - Demoed it at Nintendo. See my impressions.
Rhythm Heaven Fever (Wii) - Same as above. Can't wait for both games.
Peggle (Android) - Got this for free a while ago off of the Amazon Appstore. Played this for the first time and found it fun.
Frogger (Android) - Also got this for free off the Amazone Appstore. It's Frogger, but the touch controls make it harder.
Everlands HD (Android) - Another Amazon Appstore freebie, though I played the demo from the HP WebOS store in the past. It's a challenging battle puzzler.

Neal, stick with Shadows of the Damned. It's a fantastic game, and far more polished than any Suda game before it. I must admit though, I love No More Heroes 2 a little bit more.

Oh I will. I just need to jump back in sometime soon. I don't think it'll be a hard game to get back into.

I'm now tempted to sell my copy of Skyrim too. Ever since my horse ran away while I was over encumbered, I've lost interest in playing it. I mean, Ocarina of Time allowed you to call for your horse 13 years ago, why can't they do it in Skyrim?

KITT 10KFebruary 09, 2012

If you OWN the horse and you "fast travel" to some place the horse should be right next to you when you get there, (but that's assuming it wasn't killed while trying to run off).

No one likes Swapnote? I think it's cuz y'all added boring people.

I think its because there are too many notes and no way to sort them.

I liked what I played of SwapNote, but I haven't opened it in almost a month and will likely never open it again, due to the reasons Neal stated.

Off the top of my head and in no particular order I played:
Zelda: Skyward Sword- Finally completed it in January, did not like it much. Had numerous issues with the controls.

Mario Galaxy 2: Stopped playing a while ago, went back to finish. Was very frustrated by some of the later stars and walked away.

Skylanders: Played with my son for a little bit. Burnt some sheep.

Pushmo: Love the game, highly addicted to it. Stuck on one of the later levels though. Was distracted by Mutant Mudds and need to get back to it.

Swapnote: Been having fun with it, but interest seems to be dying. Too bad. Showed off some of my various collections.

Mutant Mudds: First few levels are easy, then the challenge ramps way up. Great use of the 3d

Pilotwings Resort: Got it for Christmas because it was on sale. Ok game but not great.

Zelda Minish Cap: Played through the first dungeon, fun game, will finish sometime.

Find WII, Puzzle Swap: Did both on the rare occasions when I Street Passed.

Resident Evil Revelations Demo: Played through it a few times, trying to decide if I want the game or not. Still unsure.

Zelda OOT 3D: Played a little bit trying to finish the game, got distracted.

Wario Ware Inc: Played a few minutes on lunch break. Love the game

Mario Kart Super Circuit: Yup it still sucks.

Mario VS DK: One of my favorite ambassador games, having a lot of fun with it.

Wario Land 4: Messed around with while trying to decide what to vote for in Retroactive. Plan on finishing it one day.

Zelda 1: Checked in to see if I beat the first quest, I had.

F Zero Maximum Velocity: Hated it. Then found out about the feathering trick, need to play again.

Zelda  4 Swords: Messed around with it briefly, not enjoying it much. Need another player.

Mario Kart 7 demo: Messed around with it in Target, seems fun.

I also spent a good portion of the month running around like mad trying to find Radiant Historia for a price I am willing to pay. Held off on getting it when I saw it in November because of Christmas, but no one got it for me. Probably never going to get to play it.

Hahaha!  I've got your number on 2 out of 4 launch tables at the moment. Of course, you are DESTROYING me on Excalibur, which seems to be everyone's favorite table.

Very excited about the prospect of DLC for this game. Not sure that I really need more table, as I'm far from mastering any of the first four, but the quality of these ones is so high that I'm curious to see what else Zen Studios has to offer.

You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you for saving me from selling this wonderful game.

You've probably seen this, but don't lose hope my friend! There's a good chance that you can play the game now! Boom.
