Metroid Prime Trilogy Marathon Weekend

by Nick DiMola - August 18, 2009, 8:05 pm EDT
Total comments: 111

The review copy of Metroid Prime Trilogy is in, and in celebration we will be trying to dash through as much of the Trilogy as possible.

We will be taking live calls via Skype, and will hopefully have a few extras helpers to keep this party going for 48 hours straight... or even longer!

Please tune in and join in the fun! There will be a live chat available and a nightly contest where we'll be giving away some random Wii strategy guides and a Virtual Console copy of Super Metroid to finish out the weekend.

UPDATE (8/21):

Alright, we won't be going 48 hours straight, but unlike the Zelda Marathon, we are going to keep to a strict schedule.

All times are EST

Friday:

  • 6PM - Begin Marathon
  • 9PM - Call In Question: What is your favorite Metroid game?
  • 11PM - Live Trivia Contest
  • 2AM - End of Day

Saturday:

  • 10AM - Begin Day
  • 2PM - Call In Question: Who/What is your favorite Metroid character?
  • 5PM - Contest #2: Stump Zach Miller
  • 9PM - Call In Topic: Describe your ultimate Metroid game
  • 2AM - End of Day

Sunday:

  • 10AM - Begin Day
  • 2PM - Call In Question: What game would you change in Metroid series and how?
  • 5PM - Super Metroid (VC) Giveaway
  • TBA - End of Day

I urge everyone who has an interest in participating to download Skype. It's how we will handle on-air communication, and it's totally free. We'll be taking calls the whole time we are playing and we will have appearances from various staff members throughout the weekend, including the RFN cast!

Just as last time, we will also feature a live chat via IRC right below the live broadcast, so please join in there and chat with fellow viewers!

Protocol to call in is as follows:

First send a chat message to the handle nintend0nick (that's a zero in there). I will then initiate the call from my machine and I will broadcast our call live. We can talk about anything (Video Game or Site Related, of course), just use the initial chat message to describe the topic of the call.

UPDATE (8/23):

Thanks for tuning in everyone, the weekend was most definitely a success! Please leave us feedback on what you enjoyed/disliked so that we can improve future marathons.

Over the course of the week we are going to be completing Echoes and possibly Corruption. If guys are interested in us broadcasting them, please also let us know in the feedback. If there is enough demand, we will certainly do just that!

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask them in the Talkback forum thread!

Great to hear you are doing this again. Loved the Zelda Marathon.

I'm sure we'll all be doing something similar by next weekend, just not broadcasting it.   Should be fun to tune in again though.  8)

Very good choice for a marathon. I look forward to following your progress this weekend.

Speaking of which, I'd be impressed if you managed to complete all three Metroid Primes within 48 hours... especially if you aim for 100%. Are you going to try and collect every upgrade?

Mop it upAugust 19, 2009

Are you really going to try to play for 48 hours straight? That's just crazy. Who's going to be watching at 2AM?

I'll probably stop by the chat a few times during the event to see how things are going.

Hey, if I'm still in the middle of trying to grind my way to the end of Wild Arms Alter Code: F (I'm in the middle of a massive pile of End Game sidequests/optional bosses), I probably would just for something interesting to watch in the meantime.

I'm expecting we will blast through the individual games as quickly as possible. Thus we will only be getting what's necessary to complete the game and moving on. If by some miracle we complete all three ahead of schedule we'll probably revisit the first game and try and find some of the upgrades.

It looks like our friends that were intending to join us aren't going to make it due to work on Saturday. Sooo... we'll be putting up an official schedule tomorrow detailing start and end times for each day, as well as what we'll be doing at specific times (contests, call blocks, etc).

We will have to at some point see how many people we can get on a skype call.

To answer your question yes I believe it is a voice chat program.

Nick DiMolaNick DiMola, Staff AlumnusAugust 21, 2009

Skype is a voice chatting program (it's owned by eBay). It works very well and we use it to do all of our podcasting at NWR. We will be using it extensively over the weekend, so if you have any desire to talk to us live definitely get it installed!

BeautifulShyAugust 21, 2009

Is there any special equipment you need?

Is there any special equipment you need?

A microphone, the Skype program itself, and a phone bill capable of supporting your call (the program comes with I think 5 free minutes, but that's all you get).

Nick DiMolaNick DiMola, Staff AlumnusAugust 21, 2009

No phone bill required. As long as you call another Skype user it's completely free. My Skype name is available in my profile and I'll have that active during all of the hours we're playing.

Any time you want to call the show, I'll have you guys send me a chat message first through Skype, and then I'll call you back. This way we won't get people calling over each other (assuming the feature is popular enough).

Today I'll be updating the blog post with a whole bunch of important information detailing everything, so keep an eye out for that.

Maybe I missed it, but where's the link to the live feed?

Nick, what's the random trivia contest?

Nick DiMolaNick DiMola, Staff AlumnusAugust 21, 2009

Haven't quite worked that out yet, but I presume we'll be doing something with live calls. Perhaps a really tough trivia question of some sort, with the first to call in with the right answer wins. I'll have the definite details ironed out later.

I'll probably be up all night tonight not writing the research paper I'm supposed to be writing so I'll check in. Not too much, though, I've never played the first two and I don't want too much of them spoiled.

I'm about to write a walkthrough for a fool-proof method to get on chat, Chessa and Nick, I'll post it here.

First, download pidgin, found here: http://www.pidgin.im/
(Pidgin is a conglomerated chat and IM client, it can run IM, YM, MSN, Googletalk, IRC, and more simultaneously.)

Install and open Pidgin, then, when the window is open, go to the "Accounts" tab.

Choose the "Manage Accounts" option.

Click the "Add" button.

Under Login Options, make sure to have the following entered under each section:
Protocol: IRC
Username:Your desired username
Server: irc.firecore.net
Password:Your desired password
Local Alias:Your desired handle/username

Once Pidgin connects to the IRC server, a NickServ chat window should open.
Type "/join #NWR" and another window should open, containing NWR's chat.

Congratulations, you did it!

YankeeAugust 23, 2009

Great marathon!
What definitely worked was the viewer involvement through skype and the chat. The conversation was always solid even later in the night. The questions for people to call in and answer gave it a really cool talk radio feel. I'm looking foward to any future marathons  ;D And look, you guys even got me to post, and I have been lurking forever.

I will do a marathon if the stars align and I have a full weekend free to do one.

My favorite idea right now is Super Nintendo Mario games...so Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, SMRPG, Super Mario Kart, Mario Paint...probably more obscure stuff, too.

Of course there's always the possibility of a Captain Rainbow and Disaster: Day of Crisis import marathon.

Of course there's always the possibility of a Captain Rainbow and Disaster: Day of Crisis import marathon.

So it is written, so it shall be.  I think these marathons would actually be more interesting if they were covering games probably most of us had never played.  Some of the more amusing moments of the Metroid Prime marathon happened during the playthrough of Echoes where we had some posters who hadn't played the game and even a player who hadn't played the game.

kraken613August 24, 2009

I honestly enjoyed the marathon for the conversations more than actually watching the game.

JayBayBayAugust 24, 2009

I agree. I tried not to pay attention to gameplay too much since I'm going to be playing enough of it starting later on today. All my questions about the Trilogy were answered and then some. Thanks again!

Also, do you guys usually do these marathons for upcoming games where you receive the review copy or just special occasions?

BeautifulShyAugust 24, 2009

This is only the second time we did one.Played through the Zelda series last time.

It is a special occasion.

Mop it upAugust 24, 2009

Glad you joined up JayBayBay! Check out the Welcome Topic in General Chat if you'd like to formally introduce yourself.

Things got pretty hectic there with the calls and the chat box, but you all did a good job of addressing as much as you could.

That Super NES marathon is a good idea, though it might be best to focus on games which are available on the Virtual Console. Those seem like the ones people are more likely to have interest in, plus they'd be easily accessible for anybody who didn't own them.

A marathon for New Super Mario Brothers Wii would be awesome because of the co-op action.

that Baby guyAugust 24, 2009

I think the marathon was great, all together.  The idea of having skype callers, arranged call-in discussions, and guest commentators helped keep the marathon moving without any dull, empty spaces, unlike several marathons that I've seen before.  Personally, I find after this bit, it's a little better to have too many people on the line at once than only one who's doing the bare minimum of talking and commentating.

This is probably going to be feedback about everyone involved in the event, together, in one post.  That includes hosts, callers, chatters, and everyone in-between.

The Metroid Prime series, in my opinion, isn't great for a marathon.  They're a little bit lengthy to chug through if you don't know precisely where to go at the specific time necessary, and unless the individual viewer knows what they're looking at, the pace of movement, as well as map navigation can be a little disorienting.  That's got little to do with the events that occurred during the marathon, of course, but just my two cents about the game.

If a caller/commentator has backed off and not given input, or even more, audibly moved on to something else, I think the person should probably go ahead and be dropped, since, well they're not really participating... That's not to be confused with someone who's involved with the discussion, but is looking for a chance to speak his or her mind; to maintain a diverse range of views, sometimes you have to wait to speak or hear yours, and there's no problem with that.

While I feel the chat can honestly be regulated mostly by those in the chat, I would say that in most cases, anything off the topic of video games, as in completely unrelated to video games, the staff, NWR, or anything in that realm (Read: Baseball), should be left out of the verbal discussion.  While viewers, readers, and even chatters can easily ignore parts of the chat they dislike or wouldn't follow, the same can't be said about what whomever on the feed says.  Leave that stuff off the skype calls, and I think most would be happier.

I also know I called up and spoke for hours, overall, and I definitely would not have been offended had anyone, in the chat or hosting the marathon, wanted to disconnect my call or something similar.  Even if people found me a relevant and interesting speaker this time, I know that depending on the circumstances and even something as simple as my mood, that might not be true.  Since this is the case, it should be said that anyone calling in, myself included, should just about always be prepared to end the call, and if removed, wait some time and ask privately to get back in the call.  Speaking of private... Chessa (and maybe Nick) need to learn to check private messages in chat!  I sent one or two the first day, and found I'd be more likely to get a response via the skype messenger.  Ultimately, it might be best if there were a liaison to transmit important private talk to them, in order to weed out things that might make that responsibility unmanageable during busy times.  Any staffer would probably do.

If possible, though I know it would be difficult, I'd much prefer to be able to hear everyone there while on a skype call.  Often, the game's player and/or navigator could be heard via the feed, but not by the skypers, and I read a few people complaining about confusion and too many conversation.  With that said, don't complain about chat being off-topic of whomever is speaking. It's a chat; people will say what they want, when they want, and I'd hope regulation would only need to be at a minimum there.  The chat isn't just going to jump on what's being said, especially if there's already disconnect between the hosts and the commenters, so just take the chance to discuss whatever you'd like in chat.  I speak as a caller when I say seeing "Three conversations... :(" posted in the chat is difficult to deal with.  Every time I saw that, I'd listen in to hear Nick and Chessa's line, and couldn't hear anything from them, at all. Taking it further, when I was listening to the feed, I saw people say that, while at the time there were only two, and my impression was the third referenced the chat.  The truth was, it was confusing and annoying as a caller and a chatter to see someone complaining about things in the chat and on the feed at once, so don't do it, jerks :p

If you ask me, I personally try not to be too vulgar, however, I don't mind offensive things, one bit, and if they get to be too much, I'm a pretty good selective hearer.  I found the things Nick and Chessa said, at several points, to be absolutely hilarious, especially when Chessa was playing.  I would encourage a little more active switching between the two just because I felt bad hearing that Nick's hand was beginning to hurt from playing the game.

Yes, yes, I know that was mostly criticisms, but I want to leave with saying it's the best marathon I've ever watched, and the only one I've chosen to be even a part of the chat.  I critique because I enjoyed it, and I want to add in my thoughts to perhaps spark an idea that would make it better, Chessa (Don't hunt me down!  You'll probably just attack the other Jason on accident, anyways).  Most everyone had great chemistry for having never spoken with each other, and I felt often meshed well with NWR staff.  Nick and Chessa played the games great, and were impressive, given how vast the MP series really is.  Every aspect of the event blended very well, so let's see it again some time.

Thanks!

I should be getting Captain Rainbow and Disaster in this week (I hope), so I'll check'em out and make a call on whether or not I do those two or the SNES Mario idea, which would primarily be SMW, YI, SMRPG, SMKart, and some brief stop-overs in things like Mario Paint.

I will be doing a marathon at some point, I promise. I just don't know when I'll have a free weekend :(.

Also, I like the idea of trying to do marathons for new releases. A New Super Mario Bros. Wii would be awesome, and if anyone has any other new releases they'd like to see marathons of, let us know and we'll see what we can do.

ShyGuyAugust 24, 2009

I liked the part where they left the camera on and went to dinner then the ghost walked in front of their TV.

Nick DiMolaNick DiMola, Staff AlumnusAugust 24, 2009

Thanks for your input Jason (thatguy). It's helpful to hear the criticisms along with the praise. My feelings aren't hurt easily, so please be critical everyone. It only can make future marathons that much better.

I'm ecstatic to hear it was your favorite marathon, though. Now that it's over, I actually miss the environment we had going over the weekend. It was a ton of fun talking with all you readers/viewers! I don't know why the Skype thing didn't dawn on me during the Zelda marathon, but right after I felt like it would be a good idea. Most of that marathon was me blabbing on about nonsense. With Skype in the mix, it allows me and even Chessa to step away from the mic when we are tired and let you guys carry the dialog. I find this interesting for both myself and for the viewers. It gives a set of diverse opinions, views, and voices. The staff interaction also helped because I think people like knowing the personalities behind the names.

Overall, I'm extremely happy with the whole thing, and I look forward to playing a less demanding game for a future marathon where we have more continuous on screen action and less fatigue and replay due to challenge.

that Baby guyAugust 24, 2009

Oh!  You think you're clever, changing from Mr. Jack to Nick DiMola, do you?  Hmmm?  Hmm?

Anyways, what I was going to say, it might be wise to recommend a link to instructions on how to download an IRC client and make it into the channel, just in case something goes wrong with what's on the site.  I posted a quick, effective guide about pidgin after I figured it out myself, and I got a few "thank yous" about it, so I figured I'd mention something that's easier to find than on page 2 of the thread's comments.

BeautifulShyAugust 24, 2009

One of the things that I liked was the chat during the marathon. Also liked other people showed up that wasn't NWR like that Infinity guy.
How many of you guys Digged the article?

that Baby guyAugust 24, 2009

Also, all the other marathons I've seen have actually been surprisingly shoddily put together.  I've watched a few of those speed gamers marathons (The idea behind the name of "The Speed Gamers," is that they finish several games in a small amount of time, somewhat close to the records for the games) that work like this:

Player A, B, and C are all speed gamers, and will each play a game.
Player A has never played his game before.
Player B played his game a few years ago, but has forgotten everything.
Player C has never played his game, not once, and it's the most difficult game of all of them.
Now, the 1st game begins, and the Speed Gamers have one of many commentators on screen.  The commentator knows very little of what the player is doing, and typically has marginal knowledge of said game and series, at best.  Instead of talking about things related to the game, he only reads and speaks questions from one of about 1000 chatters, and then answers it.  This happens for hours on end.
Then, they switch commentators.  Guess what?  The new commentator does the exact same thing.
The people who play the games do not speak to anyone watching while they play, and by the time they do wind up commentating, it's well beyond whatever game he or she was playing, and so he or she never discusses anything about the game.
Finally, several people climb into a room, and start eating or blending things, singing, dancing, or even shaving in order to encourage donations to whatever the charity of the marathon is.  A few hours later, the marathon ends.

And that's it, for days, really.  There's very little discussion, very little organized ahead of time, and it's just a huge, snowballed mess that developed itself because there's a lack of regular game marathon players on the market.

Contrast that with what I've said about this marathon, and you'll see how clearly, the effort you put in to plan out the event, the idea of having a relevant guest, combined with not making absurd claims about what exactly you are (unlike the "Speed Gamers' name), well, all of it really meshes very well.  I find it difficult to believe that how the Speed Gamers operate, they've earned probably over 100,000 total dollars for charity.  It's appalling.

Regardless, I don't mean to rant about them, but rather try to show that for the second marathon you've done, it worked brilliantly.  Something I realized I enjoyed was that the marathon had a beginning and an end each day!  I didn't realize it at first, but it was definitely a good idea.  If you did feel like you wanted to have something running, someone playing at every hour, perhaps there could be a break, and then a side game or two could be played in the middle.  Somehow, I think you're happier with a nice break, anyways ;)

Lindy is a play on words of his last name Lindermann.

This is why we need Legend of OO

I am onboard with the Pikmin marathon, that would be stellar.

Another good one would be Mega Man 1-3 + 9

Nick DiMolaNick DiMola, Staff AlumnusAugust 25, 2009

I'd like to announce that "Why do they call them Ice Climbers?" has become an official NWR Marathon Meme.

Also Pikmin sounds like a very enticing marathon. I'll throw that in the queue.

that Baby guyAugust 25, 2009

Why do they call them the Ice Climbers?

NinGurl69 *hugglesAugust 25, 2009

Arse Climbers

Because they're ice-cold killaz?

If I do the MM marathon, it will consist of MM1-6, and probably 9.

Yes, you will all suffer through MM6. I'd do 7 and 8, but they're not really from that era. Eight especially is closer to the MMX series.

MM6 is a game that was rushed out the door, had terrible boss designs, almost every level was a palette swap. Ewww, I understand your hate for it!

Meh, Mega Man 6 may have been the worst out of the NES series but it was still better than 7 and 8.

NinGurl69 *hugglesAugust 25, 2009

7 was good.

8 was awful.

The NES games are for the most part untouchable, cuz they serve a very important foundation in Capcom's sequelitis strategy.

PeachylalaAugust 26, 2009

MM8 was awful, in a So Bad It's Good awful.

8-bit remaking that title could make it not suck.

MM8 wasn't too bad, apart from the awful anime cutscenes and "Mega Ball" powerup that is only good against one boss. Pretty easy by comparison to the others, though.

that Baby guyAugust 26, 2009

No one has mentioned Mega Man Bass, Mega Man Soccer, or Mega Man Battle and Chase yet. :(

Or the ones on the GameBoy.

That'll be my part of the marathon. I'll just play Mega Man Soccer the entire team and curse at how stupidly designed the game is, and then go and play Tiny Toon Adventures Acme All-Stars Soccer and feel better about life.

You should be forced to play through the horrible PC ports of early Mega Man games.

that Baby guyAugust 26, 2009

I had Mega Man 3!  It wouldn't run properly on my PC, and I couldn't figure out how to fix it, so the framerate was far and beyond faster than anything playable.

It would still have the bad level designs and uninteresting weapons.

I have the first and second ones for the Game Boy, they are actually pretty good. I was sad when the Game Boy Mega Man collection was canceled.

I have Mega Man Soccer too, don't know why.

that Baby guyAugust 26, 2009

I wanted the GameBoy Mega Man collection.  I must've cried three nights for that one.

I can't believe A) they lost the original code B) they couldn't get somebody to bundle an emulator with the original ROMs (which probably would have turned out better anyway).

I suggested this in the chat, and I'll do it again here - a "Best of Game Boy" marathon to support the Virtual Handheld on the DSi.  Too many people think there are no good pre-GBA titles worthy of re-release.  Prove them wrong!

I think the next marathon Nick should do is New Super Mario Bros Wii but only if he can get 4 people playing at once. If Nick can't then one of the staff should. It needs to be played with 4 players.

I'll volunteer my time if someone wants to splurge for the bus ticket and the hotel. ;)

that Baby guyAugust 26, 2009

Oh, I'd totally show up if he was letting Gainesville Jasons play the game.  It would be a little less confusing in person, probably.

This would be totally awesome if Nick and Chessa have a Super Game Boy!

Hey, I have a Super Game Boy still. That would be a great marathon. I could run through Metroid 2 with all the "suggested color schemes" from the Super Game Boy Player's Guide!

This will be happening.  Whether another one happens before that is the only question.
