2nd Annual NWR Live Podcast Telethon for Child's Play

by James Jones, Greg Leahy, Jon Lindemann, and Jonathan Metts - November 12, 2011, 2:35 pm EST
Total comments: 107

The podcast marathon returns to raise money for Child's Play.

It's all over! The telethon was a huge success, and we sincerely thank all the donors, special guests, audience callers, and fantastic NWR staff members who made all this work so well. We did get a recording of the show, warts and all, and we'll be releasing it in parts this week.

Telethon Recording, Part One (3:07:29) - MP3 or AAC
Telethon Recording, Part Two (3:05:43) - MP3 or AAC
Telethon Recording, Part Three (3:09:10) - MP3 or AAC

(We'll leave the original event page below in case you want to see how it all went down!)

We're back with another mega-podcast for charity, all performed live with many opportunities to interact with the NWR crew and our special guests. Please consider supporting this event with a generous donation to Child's Play -- all money goes directly to Child's Play and counts toward our fundraising goals. When certain amounts are reached, we'll unlock another hour of exciting live content!

Join us in the chat room while we're on air. Schedule is below the chat box. Having trouble? You can also connect with a dedicated IRC client. Server: irc.browsingtheinternet.com Channel: #nwr

JIGGAWHAT: An epic, slightly precedented Nintendo/gaming-themed live audio "podcast" telethon

JIGGAWHY: To support Child's Play, a charity that provides toys and games to sick kids

JIGGAWHO: Nintendo World Report staff, special guests, and you!

JIGGAWHEN: Saturday, November 19, 12:00pm (Noon) Eastern until...?

JIGGAWHERE: Right here! Check back for the audio stream, live chat, and donation link.

JIGGAHOW: Magic of the Internet

Here at Nintendo World Report, we've long been supporters of Child's Play, the fantastic charity that provides toys and games to hospitalized kids. If you're not familiar with Child's Play, check out the official website and listen to Jonny's RFN Special interview with Mike Krahulik, co-founder of the charity (and Penny Arcade), way back in 2007. So, when our old friend Karl Castaneda brought us an idea for doing a special, live-streaming podcast to support Child's Play, we got excited. Not only can we do things live that don't make sense in the recorded version, like real-time listener interaction, but the lack of editing means there are fewer constraints on how long the show can run. Then we thought... why not do it telethon-style, all day long? It was amazing last year, and we were able to raise over $2000 for this amazing charity, all thanks to our wonderful listeners and fans!

***If you are new to NWR podcasts, please be advised that the show contains explicit language. We're doin' it for the kids, but the show itself is for grown-ups.***

Shenanigans!

Get your brooms ready, folks.

Killer_Man_JaroTom Malina, Associate Editor (Europe)November 06, 2011

Cool-whip. I really enjoyed last year's shindig and I hope I can participate again this year. It's nice that you've made the transition from RFN Live to NWR Live, so the full podcast suite is represented. Woo!

CericNovember 06, 2011

So we need to raise $9,600 to keep RFN on for a whole day.

How many listeners does RFN have?  I would easily say 500 at least.  So everyone put in $20 and we'll eventually have drunk cast.

Actually, we only need everyone who listens to RFN to chip in $7 (right now, the last level we have is $3200).

Yes but, they levels go up by $400 per hour.  Hence the amount for 24 hours of Podcast.

In the interest of being able to program exciting content for the entire event, I decided to limit the duration to eight hours with each one having an equal fundraising goal.

And I am not going to start discussing RFN traffic in detail, but it much higher than the number you guessed.

nickmitchNovember 07, 2011

Aw, yeah! Can't wait for this! Last year was a blast.

PlugabugzNovember 07, 2011

Given Jonny has said on multiple occassions, and plus there's the snowball effect of having regular weekly content which keeps people coming back, i have to guess its in the thousand(s?).

Wherever it is, as long as the telethon has a dedicated 15 minute hyper-diatribe of James ranting off about SOMETHING i will be happy.

I started with 1,000 but I figure half that were dedicated listeners.

LithiumNovember 07, 2011

doesn't look like i can listen in live on the telethon since i have to work that day, maybe the last hour since it ends at 6pm PST but hopefully you guys offer podcasts again this year as well.

OreantaAlexandre Trottier, Contributing WriterNovember 07, 2011

This is going to be AWESOME... I'd better be able to watch at least some of it live! Can't wait :)

CericNovember 08, 2011

I was the first to donate.  According to the little thingy up there I'm the 1%.  Bow to me :D

Ceric, we bow to you anyway.

CericNovember 10, 2011

I was out contributed by 20 dollars...

famicomplicatedJames Charlton, Associate Editor (Japan)November 11, 2011

$2000 for a live Famicast, there's some pressure right there!
Danny and I have some great ideas and it should be a fun hour, I hope we get the chance to do it!

Call your friends, sell your pets/grandparents, we can DO IT.

Wait a minute are you in the Pets and Grandparent reselling game?

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorNovember 12, 2011

A) Can we get this plastered over the front page?  I really need this to happen. :D

B) Who should I contact with regards to my personal prize donations this year?
What will I give away? Who knows!  Probably some Wii Downloads again.  Stupid DSiWare/eShop not letting me gift games.

Bob, we greatly appreciate any help you can provide. Please email me or the RFN address.

There should be a front page banner for the event by the end of today.

ShyGuyNovember 13, 2011

RFN listenership is closer to 5000.

CericNovember 13, 2011

Now we're up to 5 Contributors

1: 40
2: 60
3: 50
4: 20
5: 30

If we can keep this type of quality and up the quantity this should be a breeze.

NbzNovember 13, 2011

I will most definitely be playing Skyward Sword/3D Land while listening to this on Saturday. Its gonna be great guys, last years was awesome :D

zerocustomNovember 15, 2011

Not sure if I will be around on the 19th so I donated early, hope to hear a recording if I don't make it.  ;D

CericNovember 15, 2011

We Unlocked the Louie the  Cat Level!!!
*person comes over whispers in ear*
What do you mean its "Memoirs of a GameCube w/ Billy Berghammer"?
I wanted the cat...

On a silly note, looks like everyone is giving 1% so all we need are 86 more 1 Percenters.

nhainesNovember 15, 2011

I was looking forward to donating to Child's Play this year... since I have limited funds and they have no overhead, I always enjoy contributing to them solely.  So I was more than happy to donate through the NRW link.  Now to see if I can get my company to match the contribution!

I donated $50, but I hope anyone who can will donate even just $5 if they can.  It's for a great cause and a lot of little donations really add up fast.

CericNovember 15, 2011

Thanks for donating.
Every contributions helps get us to...
*Looks Ups*
She na ni gans!

ejamerNovember 15, 2011

Nice! I don't have $50 to drop right now, but did throw $10 into the pot earlier. Here's hoping that others make the same effort to donate whatever fits into their budget. Remember: it's not just for charity, but also to hear Gollum sing God Save the Queen at the end of the day... or maybe we're donating not to be subjected to that?

If there really are 5000 listeners then we can run the table for less than $1 apiece. C'mon everybody!
;D

nhainesNovember 15, 2011

$10 is a great amount!  I've always tried to donate something that hurts, and a couple years I couldn't donate anything.  But it's a great charity for sure.  I wish I could donate more this year but as it is I'm making up for a couple missed years.

I don't know how often the status updates, though... it hasn't changed since before I donated.

It'll update once the donation clears. I don't think mine's going to hit until the day of the event since it had to go through currency conversion.

Not-so-Phantom Edit From The Shameless Promotion Department: Like last year, I got a thread on the NeoGAF rolling. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=32727070

CericNovember 16, 2011

Hey, if the shameless promotion department good enough for Car Talk its good enough for me.

CericNovember 17, 2011

Wow,
We've had some big spenders.  Really jumped there.
Lets see that will mean...
*Looks Up*
"Listener "Mail" Call-In Bonanza"

Congratulations All!

$2000 more and we can start to win those covenant NWR Bucks !!!!

oksodaScott Thompson, Associate EditorNovember 17, 2011

And not to jump the gun, but we are exploring the ability to have listeners compete in the game of NWR Jeopardy. So, that's an incentive.

So far it appears that the Review Roundtable for Zelda might feature two prominent 10s... wonder if we can confirm that.

I can now confirm that Jeff Kalles from Penny Arcade will be joining us, probably for the call in bonanza and the GameCube retrospective. Jeff worked at Nintendo for much of the GC years so he has an interesting perspective. Jeff was also on last year's telethon and appeared on the Geist RetroActive since he was producer on that game, among others.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorNovember 17, 2011

I picked up prizes yesterday.  Last year's listeners will already guess some (most) of my donations, but this year, I picked up something extra awesome.  Ideally, you should all already have it, but I'm guessing you don't.  Which means you suck.  This prize will make you not suck.  :D

Its Skylanders isn't it?

We're almost to "Listener "Mail" Call-In Bonanza"!

Come on everyone we Can Do IT before the date!

Beginning Friday morning, Billy will be on the new episode of Weekend Confirmed, pimping this event hardcore. :-) As a fan of the show, I am really thrilled about this!

famicomplicatedJames Charlton, Associate Editor (Japan)November 18, 2011

I can also confirm that for the Famicast hour we will have 2, possibly 3 members of the 8-4 Play podcast!

Coupled with the promise of 8-bit tunes and Onsen talk, I can't see how anyone wouldn't want to donate enough to get us there! ;)

SundoulosNovember 18, 2011

Made a donation!  I don't know how much of the live event that I'll be able to listen to due to family stuff, etc., but I look forward to trying to catch an hour or so of it.  I hope that a good bit of it will make it to downloadable format.

Either way, I'm excited, and it's for a good cause.  C'mon and donate, everyone!  I think the goal is definitely reachable!

TJ SpykeNovember 18, 2011

Due to a prior engagement, I won't be able to listen to it live. I look forward to listening to the podcast(s) though, last year it was really good.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorNovember 18, 2011

Interesting note: the article was updated with a list of potential prizes, but the forum post didn't pick up the changes. So anyone looking here wouldn't be able to tell.

And that is an awesome prize. Very generous of you!

Have there been any reviews of the Child's Play Charity?

I looked and I could only find the words of the actual people who run the charity and that doesn't mean jack.  With the huge miscellaneous fees a lot of places have I don't give money to anything unless it has been vetted.

I've seen a lot of Testimonial. Also here is the Wiki for it.

I've never seen anyone come out and say that the money, games, etc. don't 100% go to the hospitals.

Ebay has Verified it for what its worth.

I've given to them for years.  This is the same group of people who do PAX.

Edit: About an hour of research on this... :/

I have preliminary confirmation that PGC legend Rick Powers will be calling in at some point!

NIS America is graciously donating a James Jones NIS America RPG Prize Pack featuring Sakura Wars Wii, Phantom Brave Wii, and Atelier Annie DS!

jrlibrarianJeffrey Trewin, Associate EditorNovember 18, 2011

Not making any promises, but I'm gonna try to call in and at least listen to a bit of the show. Don't really know my schedule for tomorrow yet. Revenge of Theremin Hero?

If you don't wanna go through their 990, I already have. It was for a project for a class. I can assure you that that nearly all of the donations go straight to partnering hospitals. The little bit that doesn't mostly goes towards shipping various gifts and paying the handful of employees (mostly part time). For what it's worth, you probably won't find many charities where that much of the donations go straight to the cause.

After several hours of testing and finalizing plans, everything is set in motion... now I'm going to bed, and when I wake up, we'll be almost ready to kick off this amazing event! Please help in the morning by continuing to spread the word on your social networks, even as the show gets underway! And please search deep in your pockets because we have some fantastic content lined up all the way to the end.

By the way, Jeff Cannata (Totally Rad Show, Weekend Confirmed) will join the all-star lineup for "Memoirs of a GameCube"... if we get enough donations to make it that far!

koovapsNovember 19, 2011

Good luck with the show gentlemen! I really hope you guys achieve the full $3200 and more. You run the best website and podcasts on the whole of the internet. I gave my few bucks, but sadly, I have to work today. I hope to catch the last few hours, though. I really want to hear that famicast hour. Again, good luck!

p.s. Can anyone beat 3,251,306 steps taken on the 3DS? That's my current total. My job keeps me moving and it's with me at all times.

tyrian3November 19, 2011

All right, after opening the scene last year being the first ever call-in on the show, and after being on again for the live anniversary special, tonight I'm going for the 3 in a row :)
that's right, fire up your skype because Luca from Italy, the guy who lost a prize thanks to Milon's Secret Castle, the guy who did a Mario impression to say "Happy Birthday" to RFN, the one with the weird european accent (does a european accent even exist, or is he just plain terrible at English? :P) IS COMING BACK IN TOWN! YAY!

:D

seriously, I can't wait, I hope to be able to talk to you guys again and this time I definitely hope to be more relaxed, the other times I was so excited I could barely speak!

Anyway you can post that project somewhere?  There is not really any independent checking of Child's Play on the internet and it could be helpful for next year.

Congratulations All!

We've unlocked "Game of the Year Roundtable" which will hopefully include Overlord in Residence Neal to put in Skylanders.  We all know that Skyward Sword and Super Mario 3D Land are going to win it this year so lets hope this will discuss the games that had a chance if such strong competition hadn't come out so late in the game.

Keep it up everyone.  We want to at least get to the Fami crew.  Remember We're doing this for the Kids!

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorNovember 19, 2011

Do you guys mean to be broadcasting already?

LittleIrvesNovember 19, 2011

Oh man, I hope the Famicast hour gets unlocked, as I've been loving the 8-4 Play podcast lately. And I'd definitely grab that NIS pack if I won a prize...  been wanting to check out Sakura Wars for awhile. But geez, y'all had to schedule the live event during the Michigan-Nebraska game! (Isn't there a Cornhusker on staff? If so: Go blue.) Anyhoo, I'm chipping in some $ and really look forward to listening in, either now and then LIVE or hopefully the recorded file...  Good luck!

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorNovember 19, 2011

NbzNovember 19, 2011

Is it live yet? I can't see the chat box because my Uni blocks IRC clients :(

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorNovember 19, 2011

Yeah, it's up.

NbzNovember 19, 2011

Well this is terrible. My uni internet seems to be blocking me from listening via the site. Is there any other way to listen to it?

ejamerNovember 19, 2011

Wow, nice jump in fundraising since I checked last! The GotY roundtable is probably the topic I'm most looking forward to, so glad to see that unlocked... but we're still $30 away from live Radio Trivia and hitting 50% of the ultimate goal? C'mon guys!

EDIT: I take it back. Someone donated $30 to hit the mark while I was typing.  To celebrate, I'm donating another $20.

SUCCESS!

$3450+. Shenanigans and Red Velvet to follow.

Excellent show!  thanks to all of you!

Glad I managed to start listening when Karl did the Dr Who bit haha.

delebreaubNovember 19, 2011

Great show you guys! Over $3600 and almost 115% of your goal at the end of the show! Amazing!! Can't wait for the recording and then next year.

Now I will try and get by the waiting by listening to last years show.

Dem ****ies were grappled, bombs were dropped, prizes were handed out and a good time was had by all.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to do something less harmful to myself. Where'd I put that crystal meth...?

NbzNovember 19, 2011

I really hope the recording turned out ok. I'm really annoyed that I missed the whole thing because my University internet blocks every port under then sun and just doesn't work with the audio streamer :(

Otherwise, excellent job guys, I'm slightly shocked that we managed to hit the full 9 hours AND exceed the total. A roaring success if you ask me!

ChiramiiNovember 19, 2011

Too bad there was no Red Velvet. It's like there is a puzzle piece in my life that is still missing and forever will be. That story must really be the sh*t, if not I would be disappointed. Oh well, maybe it is for the best that it will be kept as a secret. Overall a wonderful show guys. I'm glad I could help you by donating! Best entertainment I've ever had.

I forgot to mention this earlier, but this was an excellent, excellent show. The discussions were all insightful, funny and highly entertaining. It's a shame I couldn't log in and enjoy the fun, but it was fine just listening. Famicast is easily my favorite, and I regret missing Shenanigans since I had to step out and do stuff. I do hope the whole download for this is available just to listen to what I missed before

KisakiProjectNovember 21, 2011

Missed it live but donated.  Can't wait to listen to it.  I just listened to weekend confirmed.  The plug for it got me excited!  Hope parts 2 & 3 are up soon!

CericNovember 21, 2011

I'm actually a little sad this isn't broken down into the actual segments but I totally understand.  I need to check my computer it was suppose to be logging the chat if I can find it I might try to make it available.

nhainesNovember 21, 2011

Ceric, all the segments were about 1 hour long, so it should be pretty easy to find.  I was able to find where I called in after about 3 minutes, which was fun.

TJ SpykeNovember 21, 2011

It basically is broken down into segment, specifically chapters ("NWR Live Telethon", "A Bad Idea", "New Business", "Skyward Sword Roundtable", and "Call-In Bonanza"), so it shouldn't be hard to find out what you are looking for.

The chapter breaks make it easy to skip right past the Jeopardy hour.

I can't imagine why someone would want to skip any of the show. LOL. Seriously, I plan to listen to all of it (right now I am near the end of the discussion on Super Mario 3D Land).

Jeopardy is retroactively renamed "Aaron knows a lot about Nintendo games"

"... but apparently not enough."

So are we going to collectively re-do the Eternal Darkness Retroactive?

I wrote those questions largely without the help of the interwebs, which means I knew the answers. So how did you people NOT? LOL

I actually could have gotten all of the easier ones, but we stopped before then.

I would have done better, but we were playing a little fast and loose with the "wait until he stops talking to buzz in" rule. I'd have especially done better if I'd also known the answers to some more of those questions.

Thanks Pedro!

It's great listening to all the bits that happened while I was asleep (which is pretty much everything) can't wait for parts 2/3!

KisakiProjectNovember 22, 2011

Any eta on when we are getting the other two parts?

(don't mean to nag.  take you time :) Just curious)

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorNovember 22, 2011

Part 2 will be tomorrow.

Part 3 will be Friday.

KisakiProjectNovember 22, 2011

Thanks for the FYI.  I look forward to both of these so much!!!  I normally only listen to podcasts at work but part 3 will break that rule.

tyrian3November 23, 2011

Oh yes, so glad to see it hitting the net so soon :)
amazing job Karl!
I'm curious to listen to my call (I was excited and I spoke with a higher tone than my usual...hope I don't sound "in falsetto" lol) all the NWR guys were so good to me, and my time in Jeopardy...it was 1.30 am for me and I was sooo sleepy, thanks to the guys who understood my state and asked me easy questions. By the way, I knew the second one was Pacman Vs (E3 2003) but I got distracted by the laughter in the background, I tried to ask if the question could've been repeated for me (wanted to be sure) but they changed it. well thanks again guys, it was super fun! I hope it was funny to listen to a poor guy who should've been in bed 2 hours earlier than that :P
I woke up at 6.20am that day (I have a bit of a commute to get to work) and it was so hard but I did get to be there for the whole thing...it lasted until 3am so I was awake for about 21 hours straight!
It was totally worth it, and I hope you guys appreciate my support  ;D

Hoping part 2 goes up soon! I'm about to sleep :O

Finally got to listen to the Gamecube discussion.

Billy seems very angry and bitter towards the Gamecube.  I guess it is easier to discuss the negatives than the positives, especially when he was so close to it.

Cannata had nothing to contribute.  I enjoy him on Weekend Confirmed usually but it just shows how little other outlets actually know about Nintendo and how this attitude is not new to the Wii era.

It is indeed too late to donate through our event, but Child's Play accepts donations year-round at childsplaycharity.org (use the PayPal link at top-right).

Jim, I did not get that tone from Billy during the show. Maybe he just didn't want to repeat himself from all the comments on Weekend Confirmed that week. As for Jeff Cannata, this was not the ideal segment for him but it was the only time he was available. We had so many specialists that he didn't get much chance to participate. I will try to have him back sometime for a different result. :-)

KisakiProjectNovember 25, 2011

Yea I thought it was unfortunate to see him get so little time to talk.  I think he was probably overwhelmed by all the specialists.  I still loved the discussion.  I hope Cannata comes back as a guest on Connectivity or something?

Can't wait to hear part 3.

You are right, he did have a different tone on Weekend Confirmed.  I think what it was was all the swearing (not a prude but I noticed it) during the segment from Billy.  I think if the swearing was removed the tone shifts significantly.

I do wish Cannata could have talked more because I do enjoy his insight and enthusiasm when given a topic he is more of a specialist in.  Would be great if he were to come back on a regular show.

And I want to make it clear I was not complaining, just some observations.  All the segments were great and this whole show was amazing for us to listen to and we honestly thank you all for putting it together.

The 8-4 part is awesome.  Love those guys.  Very silly discussion.

Not to take away from the awesome job done by the folks here at NWR, but if you're still looking to donate now that NWR's fundraiser is over, CAG has started their fundraiser this year.

Finished listening to the entire telethon, it was excellent!

The GameCube discussion was very interesting, I have nothing but fond memories of playing the Cube, and enjoying the great games that accompanied the hardware. Eternal Darkness should have been a game changer, but maybe not enough people played it? It is still a wonderful game that I want to replay again.

I really liked the Jeopardy, some of those questions were pretty tough! And I loved the way everyone stuck to the end, the fatigue settling in nicely. Overall, I'm really proud of everyone for making this all possible.

And man, now I'm just super intrigued by red velvet. What could this possibly be? My imagination is going all over the place.
