Nintendo's handheld beats PlayStation 2's sales records as it passes the 10 million mark.
MCV has confirmed that the Nintendo DS has surpassed the 10 million sold mark, with the official number being 10.5 million handhelds. This makes it the best-selling gaming system in United Kingdom history. The milestone happened in the system's 47th week at retail. The previous record holder was Sony's PlayStation 2, which to date has sold 10.2 million systems.
The Nintendo DS was first released in the UK in March 2005, and has been at retail for four years. The handheld has then received various system upgrades, such as the Nintendo DS Lite in 2006 and the Nintendo DSi this year. Next year, Nintendo will release the Nintendo DSi XL, a new version of the DS featuring bigger screens.
