Ds games: Titles you hope are on the horizon
« on: July 17, 2004, 03:52:47 PM »
What old 64 games would you like to see on the ds... It's so awesome that all the old 64 games can be expanded using the ds touchpad. I would love to see ssb with a character creator/editor to add your own custom touch to the characters and wireless play on top of that. Golden Eye or Perfect Dark would be incredible. Jet Force Gemni Would Also be at the top of my list...

Any ideas of 64 games or gc games you would like to see?

I'd like to see ASCII/Enterbrain release its RPGmaker and Fightermaker games for the DS and outside of Japan.

World Driver Championship
Wave Race 64 (Going by the Super Mario title, maybe it will be called Wave Race 64x4?)

I don't want to see ANY N64 ports.  The DS has no analog stick and those games would play like crap with a d-pad.  Plus I already own nearly every N64 worth owning.  Making something like a new Smash Bros game that using DS functionality is great but wanging an existing game and then shoe-horning DS functionality into it doesn't interest me at all.

Thank you.  And at least someone agrees with me about no analog stick sucking for 3D games... Although you have to admit that having Goldeneye would sell systems...  Imagine 16-player Goldeneye... You know that would be a excellent killer app, as long as graphics were updated.

You know, we already have Hunters for that.

I don't think analog control is needed for 3d games. Sure, it's nice to have, but nothing that can't be done with a dpad (before anyone complains that you can't vary your movement speed without analog, why in hell do you think even Doom had a "run" button?)

Well...I agree, and disagree with KDR.  I think that the best way to do it is instead of having an Analog Stick (we're all afraid they'll break), replace the four-way D-Pad with a D-Pad in all directions.  You know...just a circular pad.  Speed variation can be accomplished (though not as comfortably as with an Analog Stick) with this method, and as far as I know, no one in the handheld gaming industry has tried it...I think it could work.

Splinter Cell would be abolutely unplayable with a d-pad. It's one extreme example but even games that seem like they wouldn't need it would play much worse on a d-pad.  F-Zero X and Star Fox 64 would be very awkward with a d-pad.  How do you do a SSB smash attack with a d-pad?  The analog stick's not an all out replacement but it provides for MUCH smoother control.  The d-pad really only works better for games that need quick digitial input like fighting games.

Plus we're talking about porting N64 games that were designed for the analog stick.  Porting them over will result in crappier controls.  If I make an original game I can design it around the d-pad but when porting changing from analog to digital is going to wang the game.

Why do any of you want more ports anyway?  Did the lack of an original 2D sprite based Mario sidescroller for the GBA not annoy you at all?

To be honest, I wish we could have both a control stick and a D-Pad.  Each has its advantages...

Lets just say no ports.

Also lets agree that they need games that are similar to sucessful ones.

Maybe Sierra could be talked into doing a Tribes game for DS.

I'm sure developers will find some way to make speed variation work.  I just played NFS:U for the first time a few days back, and it surprised me that instead of using the analog stick (which is basically for turning in this game, and thats it), you use the R trigger.  I realize currently the DS has nothing like the trigger buttons/control stick, but I'm sure Nintendo sees the problem that 3D cannot be handeled very efficiently without a proper analog stick, and I think we can safely assume the minor tweaks aren't as minor as they may sound.

I cannot believe I haven't heard this until now.  Brilliance!  I can see it working for SSB...instead of picking a character at the beginning, you create your own, one-of-a-kind character, who goes through all the stages and stuff...SSB RPG...I see it happening, I see it...

More than SSB, though, I can see this working with a LOT of games.  I don't know if this ever came out, as I don't follow PS2 games, but I remember an old episode of X-Play previewing a PS2 game where you completely draw a new creature thing (I can imagine it would be quite awkward with the analog stick) from scratch, and using some fancy technology, your creation was turned 3D, and you could use him in the game.  I think that would make a brilliant game (especially how someone mentioned RPGMaker...if you could draw custom characters with the stylus for your RPG, that would be TEH BOM) on the DS, what with the touch screen and all.  All of a sudden I see the DS in new light...

Ask Sega, they licensed the Teddy system. Amazing Island (GC exclusive, Japan only, I think) is said to use an enhaced version of it. Since it's controlled by drawing, a touchscreen would make sense there. However, I don't think it's possible to create realistic looking characters with it, it's waaay too inaccurate and eats polies like nothing else. They could give us a set of basemeshes and we draw out the accessories, that'd work. Or they could port a version of the Blender to the DS... hm, touchscreen as a fullscreen viewport with the basic transformation tools on the border and the second screen with the menu or something, with a key to switch the screens. But then they'd have to change the Blender so much to work with console controls it wouldn't be the Blender anymore. Anyway, I want a real modeling app (i.e. with things like vertex tweaking) for the DS with interface possiblities to the PC, Teddy isn't good enough for that.

A REAL Mario RPG, possibly co-devoloped by Square-Enix. There would be alot of ways to utilize the dual-screen.

Definitely NOT Japan only, Nintendo Power's previewing it next month.  Well, in that case, an Amazing Island DS would rock hard on...the DS...

Well, i used a tech demo of the teddy both with a mouse and a tablet, it doesn't improve a lot when used with a tablet, but then Sega uses an improved version that is said to sacrifice freedom for practicality.

If you want to toy around with it, the Teddy and other apps by the same author are available here.

The teddy produces lots of polies, though, even simple shapes take 1000 polies and more. That's not an issue with a current gen home console, but could very well be one with the DS. Maybe a poly reduction algorythm could make it feasible, though.

I'd like to see some type of World War II bombing game, with the bottom screen being your bomb bay looking down on the ground and the top screen being your cockpit, watching for incoming enemy planes.  That'd be cool, bombing Dresden or stuff like that.

Though preferably not another WWII FPS!

The DS games I pray for on a daily basis:

1.  Nintendo Puzzle Collection:  I imported this sucker and it is awesome.  This would make the perfect pack in game for the DS.  Everyone loves Dr. Mario, all the games have multiplayer modes perfect for wireless, and Yoshis Cookie and Panel De Pon would control great with the touchpad.  I think we have a pretty good shot at getting the Puzzle Collection on the DS.  Nintendo announced and english version and even included it on a GC demo disk, but it has since vanished.  I have a feeling it is being held back for the DS.

2.  Magic the Gathering:  I am a recovering Magic addict.  I finally had to quit because the habit was just too expensive.  I would weep hot tears of joy if Wizards ported Magic onto the DS.  With the touch screen it is the perfect platform for card games.  Unfortunately I don't think it will ever happen.  But with any luck they will at least release a Duel Masters game, which I think would still be pretty fun.

3.  Fire Emblem DS.  The two screens would be perfect for Fire Emblem.  Unit info on the top screen and the map on the bottom.  Use the stylus to move your troops around.  Awesome!

4.  Warcraft (or some other good RTS):  I am pretty sure that the DS will eventually be home to the first console RTS game that doesn't suck.  The touchscreen will allow you to select and group units.  The top screen would have the map and perhaps other vital statistics.

5.  SSBM DS:  We have all wanted to play Smash Bros. online with our far away friends.  Here is our chance.

I played the DS twice at E3 and I can assure all of you that it kicks butt.  It is not nearly as big and bulky as some of the pics make it look.  Infact, when it is folded up it looks really cool.  The ony concern I have is that Nintendo won't make use of its wireless internet capabilities.  As long as it launches with a couple games that I can play with my friends over the internet, I will be waiting in line at EB with cash in hand on launch day.  Ok, the truth is I will be waiting in line with cash in hand no matter what.  How can I say no to a new Mario, Mario 64x4, Animal Crossing, and Metroid?  I cant.

I just realized that pikmin would be great on the touch screen, you could use the stylus to gather and direct the pikmin. I am not sure how that would utilize the second screen very well though

Edit: that would be awfully hard to pull off graphically on the ds, with all of the pikmin
