Poll

How should points work?

Points are very serious: they should correspond to positive contributions to the forum, and every time they're given or taken away, a reason should be given by a mod
Points are business casual: mods will award good deeds and smite bad deeds, but may not tell anyone about it
Points are funhouse batshit crazy: Can be given and taken away at whim by mods who do so for their pleasure and their pleasure alone (current policy)
Points should not be used at all
Points should be part of a forum game with complicated rules

I think it would be better if points are just for fun.  Too many forums take them too seriously.  Besides, if we took points seriously, you'd absolutely without a doubt be a worse poster than Pale is.  Right now it's probably a fifty/fifty shoot.

I don't get that. If points are serious, Pale and I wouldn't touch each other's scores. We'd set the number we like and leave it there.

Are you implying I'm a terrible poster?

I think there should be a point to it otherwise it's just something that will be used for a while, while it's new and then over time not so much and people will be wanting to get points to do something where no points are to be given.

Like give points for every 100 posts a person makes.

a points for each poll participated in.

Up the number of points needed to be turned in to use them, instead of 3 for something, make it 30 and so on.

Make it possible for everyone to take advantage of what is available and just just the few that are on very good terms with Mods or know how to "work the system"

Screw that, points should be given out and taken away randomly at the whim of a mod, where reason does not need to dictate why they gave/took away points.

I want to vote for two:

Points are funhouse batshit crazy: Can be given and taken away at whim by mods who do so for their pleasure and their pleasure alone

Points should be part of a forum game with complicated rules

The game should be the whim of the mods. :)
There should be crazy-ass complicated rules in place that rarely make sense or apply to anything, sometimes contradict one other and change on a regular basis - at the whim of the mods.

But - the rules have to be stated before a point can be given or taken away.  Don't get me wrong - say Pale posts a picture of Pikachu and you want to take a point away from him.  You could then go into the Point Rules thread, add a rule that says posting pictures of Pikachu will cost you a point, then take the point away from Pale.  All rules just have to be documented. The Rules thread could also be a place to report violators, although reporting a violator will cost you a point as well. ;)

Oh, and no removing rules once they're in place.  You can make a rule that voids a rule, but the original rule must stay on the rulebooks.

I voted for 2, business casual but serious mod approach.

I wouldn't be against opening the power up to all users though.

That's hypocritical, Pale.  You've pretty much taken the cause of the third option, lowering my points with vengeance, attacking Svevan, and randomly raising user's points that haven't posted anything decent for a few days.  You should probably be ashamed of yourself.

I disagree with you completely.  Every point I took away from someone I had a good reason for with the exception of the first point I took away from Evan when I was testing the feature.

I took points away from you because I thought the concept of gaining as many points as possible so that you could gain mod powers was lame and the constant threads discussing it were equally lame.  I'm entitled to my opinion aren't I? =P

I voted bat-**** crazy.  However, I'd still like to know why I got/lost a point if a mod feels like taking the time to jot me a thirty-second note.  If not, no worries.

However, I also think I should be given the ability to give/deduct points.  I would promise not to abuse my newfound, godlike powers.

Vudu, I give you a point when you say something clever or funny that contributes to a conversation.  I take a point away when you are being a jerk.  =P

But I'm a jerk more often than not.  Also, I noticed that one of my points disappeared in the past half hour and I don't recall being a jerk today.  I'm eating lunch, so I don't have time to yell at people.

No way, points are fun.  Unless they become serious, which would just be lame because people would start to cry over them and stuff.

He now has 8,999 points instead of 9,000!

I'd share my opinion, but talking about this subject is taboo according to Svevan, so this is obviously a not-so-clever trap.  Hypothetically, if I were to address a topic of this nature, I'd probably say that the whole thing should just be for fun so that we don't see people crying about it.
