The time has final come, SMASH BROS BRAWL IS FINALLY HERE!!!

Today is now Smash Bros day.  If any of you are reading this, then what the hell is wrong with you?  You should be playing Smash Bros and only Smash Bros.

Which is what I'm going to do right now.

Bye ;D

I did this.  I won three times, and the first didn't count.  I randomly was forced to play on on all the stages I didn't like, and we couldn't use GameCube controllers, so everyone there had a hard time doing much of anything.

I actually died because I activated the Ice Climbers Final Smash at the end of a fight, when I thought I was safe, and lost when a Diddy, unphazed by the useless Iceberg, killed me, then I couldn't cross over to kill him in the five seconds left on the clock because the Iceberg was in the way.

Yeah I got mine, there were a TON of people there too, much larger than the Halo 3 launch.

i reserved my copy at Gamestop, but they weren't having a midnight release. So i ran over to Wal-mart. waited there in the Wal-Mart McDonald's for like 3 hours playing DS. Got there, a line formed. They had only one box, I was first there, but  the manager wasn't doing a number system, so i had to be good. I got it like 5th.

I won my Gamestop midnight release tournament...and I met Dirk there to boot!

As you can see, Cap proved that his priorities differ massively from our own.

It was an awesome night: I had brought in both my N64 (with Pap's copy of SSB64 he sent me a while back, thanks Pap!) and my Wii with Melee and 4 wavebirds. I hooked the Wii up to the PS3's demo station (heheh) while the 64 was connected to a smaller TV up front.

I had been there for the Halo 3 launch as well and I can safely say that the SSB crowd is a much more civil group of people. I talked with a lot of neat folks as I stood guard over my Wii and wavebirds.

The tournament itself was 100% pure crapshoot. Random characters, random stages, random items, 1 minute matches, and mote+chuk only. I got Peach. The first round was against a Yoshi player atop one of the "sample" stages, and given that neither of us had a clue how to control the game with this setup, it went to sudden death and I lucked out by jumping in the air and hitting him with my neutral.

Second match was against a DK player on Pit's stage. I KOed him once, as I got the smash ball after I had gotten him to 110%: it gave me ample time to stand next to him, charge her forward smash to its fullest and KO him.

Third was the Super Mario World stage from Melee against Metaknight. I managed to KO him with Peach's up-smash, thanks to the lower KO walls of the Melee stages.

Fourth and final was against a Mario player, and Mario was actually his character, as I learned from watching him play Melee. This time it was in the underground version of the Mushroomy Kingdom. I had him on the ropes when it went to sudden death and I managed to hit him with Peach's back air and knock him off the left side of the screen for the win. By this time, I had gotten semi-used to the control scheme but nowhere near "proficient", so I count it all as luck more than anything.

I made sure I got the 1st copy of Brawl, since I had volunteered my Wii and N64 for the tourney, and I swapped out Melee as soon as I got it and a small group of people hung around to play some immediate Brawl, and that's when Dirk noticed I had used the tag "S_B" and realized it was me.

I'm learning the mote+chuck scheme now, but it still gives me some trouble, mainly for grabbing (and because it forces you to hold the nunchuk unnaturally). I need to prepare for the next tourney on saturday so if anyone is up for sparring, I NEED the practice with ALL starters, since I'm pretty sure it's once again random.

You need to call them up and ask for the rules of the tournament, ask if you can bring your controller, and ask if you can choose your own character.  It should be a much smaller tournament, so the issues may not be the same.  I wish you best of luck, since it sounds like that one sucked, even if it was by the official rules.

There wasn't any show of skill to be had, really.

Every time I won, it was by a thread in an encounter that could've easily gone the other way.

Did anyone else's Gamestop have different rules/controller setup?

Same thing happened to me.  Heck, the first two times, I got my least favorite stage, the top of the mountain.  I don't like it because you can't grab the edge.  I died twice in about twenty seconds on accident, because I forgot the special attack.  Then, I killed the guy twice, knocking him to the side of the mountain while it was sliding down.  Then, I lost Nana to the guppy, but lived, and let him get the smash ball on purpose, he was Fox, and he summoned a landmaster.

I went to the underside of the stage, and, as I expected, he eventually rolled off trying to get near me.  We were tied 3-3, death wise, and as the timer was rolling down, I killed him.

The first match I played was the very first match of the tournament, and the other guy's controller had a stuck nun-chuk, so after I won, on the tip of Icicle Mountain and dying by fish from not being able to figure out how to air-dodge, they restated the whole thing, and it didn't count.

I played a fox next, as I described above, and pulled out a win, and then an Ike, where I went too far right on Onett and was smashed off, but came back with a win.

The last fight there was lost, as I described, because I tried to please the crowd with the Ice Climbers' nearly suicidal Final Smash with five seconds left.  I don't know if I mentioned, but it was the Jungle Climber level.  I got that Diddy up to 70% percent w/o getting hit, yet died at 30 or 40.  The starting position on that stage are terrible, and in the reverse, I would have won, but that's not how it mattered.

Anyways, call like I said, and you may be able to get a better deal.  We got to choose our character and had two minute Brawls, so that helped some.

Hmm, I was under the impression that it was set rules nationwide...

Interesting. I definitely need to look into this.

Sounds like you had an incredible night! I wish I could've been there to enjoy the brotherhood of Smash :p. I'm also happy to hear that my copy of SSB 64 came through for you :) . Ironically, in the last few weeks I connected my N64 and started playing my old games. When I went to get SSB 64 I remembered that I gave it to you. Still don't regret it, though, since you are a bigger fan of it than I was anyways.

And don't mock Cap for getting "The Bouncer". Its a decent game. ;)

An alt of WHO?

An update: I called the next Gamestop where the 2nd tier of the tourney will be held and it's by the book: random characters, stages, mote n' chuk, 3 minutes.

And yes, Pap, the copy of 64 definitely paid off, but it looks like I won't be needing it as a fallback because Brawl is pretty decent after all.

You can still have the game, though, for old time's sake.

Speaking of SSB 64, I'm surprised that Nintendo didn't release it on the VC days before Brawl's release. While it would have been redundant it would have been a nice throwback, only to see how far the series has come since it debuted.

I had wanted to get my copy at the midnight launch, but the damn winter storm that hit the northeast stopped me from doing that (and attending the tournament at 4PM). I did get the game the next day.

Won round 2.

I have my doubts about round 3, though. I'm sure I'll run into the guys who can afford to sit there and play SSBB all day, every day for some odd reason.
