Is it over? [HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray]
« on: February 15, 2008, 08:27:24 PM »
So, NetFlix and Wal*Mart are have announced no more HD-DVD - just Blu-Ray.

Is it over?  Is it safe to come out now?

I read a headline that Toshiba was set to drop support from HD-DVD.  I guess Sony wins...

Not that'd I've actually invested money into this format war, but there IS an HD-DVD player in the house and a few hd-dvds, so I'm disappointed that the format lost.  From what I've heard hd-dvd is the superior format in many ways, and I know that at least in terms of DRM blu-ray is pretty limiting.  Ah, such is life.  I guess now will be the time to jump on all the upcoming hd-dvd sales.

Either way, standard DVD won't be dead for a long, long time to come, so no worries.

I'm hoping wireless video transmission boxes become more prevalent, like the D-Link DivX Connected box.

So Blu-Ray is the new Laserdisc.  Good for it.

VHS lasted for about 20 years.  There's no way we're all going to abandon DVD in less than ten.

I've been on the lookout for this technology too. No more blank dvds to be bought or burned, mint.

Well I have an HD-DVD player (for my 360) and of course the PS3. Supposedly from what I hear, HD-DVD is superior in that they required companies to adopt a particular format, while Blu-Ray is still struggling, heck I think they just started releasing Blu-ray profile 1.1 which means Blu-Ray player with 1.0 won't be able to play some features in upcoming Blu-Ray disks (and you can't upgrade your profile!). With that said Blu-Ray does hold more and from what I understand the disks are quite scratch resistant.

This didn't end the way I wanted, but at least now all the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sniping amongst tech site geeks will be over faster.  I had nothing invested yet because of the initial cost of entry, and considering which side won I really won't be buying into the high-def disc craze for a long while.

Good job, Hollywood!

Is this just because you are anti-sony, or because it costs more than HD-DVD?

I for one, am happying that Blu-Ray won, only because I have a PS3.  To be perfectly honest though, I agree with everyone that is saying neither will have the time to totally take over DVD.  The difference just isn't THAT high.  We are getting to the point that in many cases, how a movie was filmed becomes the image quality bottleneck, not the resolution of the TV.  I have watched several blu-ray movies on a nice big screen.  The only ones that REALLY stand head and shoulder above their DVD counterpart are the animated features.  Besides that, I almost can't tell the difference between a Blu-Ray movie and a regular DVD being upscaled by my PS3.

Oh, I do have Planet Earth on Blu-Ray, and that is absolutely stunning... but still.

Not just Netflix and Wal-mart, but Best Buy also. It's definitely done.

I'm glad there's winner... if just to shut up all the argumentative geeks. ;) On the downside there will be less pressure to reduce player prices now.

Now if only more movies would use two-layered discs rather than short-change us with single-layer, 20 mbps video.

Perhaps it's because HD-DVD was the better format, while Blu-Ray was a rushed, incomplete format that's soon going to render most standalone players virtually useless?

What UncleBob said...  While I liked the larger storage of Blu-Ray, the features of HD-DVD surpassed it.  And yes, it was the price.

So, if Bluray catches on, I think I will pick up a PS3 (When they drop below $300, that is) From what I understand it upscales DVDs pretty well, right?

Plus, I can get RE5 if it doesn't come out for the Wii

Yeah.  It makes DVDs look almost as good as most Blu-Rays in my opinion =P.

Buy my understanding the Medium itself is better for Blu-Ray while HD-DVD had more features around it but, software features can be upgraded later.
