YouTube is developing a "TV experience" for next-generation consoles. In a job listing on Google Jobs, the company advertises that it's hiring a Game Console Software Engineer to develop "versions of YouTube to work with next generation game consoles."

The listing notes that the engineer will "build the next generation game-console-based TV experience with YouTube video content" and "integrate and optimize with distribution channels and devices including all major game platforms." It also specifically notes that candidates will need "deep technical knowledge of Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 and/or Nintendo Wii." YouTube already exists as an app for Xbox 360, so this position could be to expand the service onto the PS3 and Wii-U markets.

We've reached out to YouTube for comment, as well as Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft declined to comment.

One of those 3 is quite likely. I doubt it has anything to do with Nintendo and Epic teaming up to make a Metroid game. Nor do I think Nintendo would use Android for the Wii U operating system. So that leaves only one choice left.

I could see Nintendo maybe licensing Unreal Engine 3 (or Unreal Engine 4 if it's out by then) for use in a Metroid game, but not Epic Games actually making the game.

Wouldn't Android need to be ported to IBM's Power architecture first? I just quickly Googled this but Android officially supports ARM and more recently MIPS and x86. That rumor just sounds like click-bait. Nintendo would only need a fraction of what Android provides that it might actually be easier for them to make their own Linux based OS rather than stripping Android down to the essentials.

Nintendo working with Epic to make Metroid would be huge. Asking one of the most well known and popular Western games companies with arguably the most pervasive games engines to retool Metroid would do wonders for the series' reach and popularity. I don't really see that happening but it would explain a lot, namely Mark Rein's unbridled glee when speaking about Wii U. Again, sounds like click-bait.

The online multimedia thing seems like a given. Nintendo is forgoing disc-based movie playback again but they've embraced Netflix and Hulu. I suppose if you read between the line, employing Android would give Nintendo direct ties to Google Play and even more online media. I suppose Nintendo couldn't ask for a better partner. Well, probably Apple but that's not happening unless they practically hand the keys to the kingdom to Tim Cook and Steve Jobs' ghost.

Bland as in it looks like the 60 or so other games that use that engine. No thanks. And I don't find an engine good if it can't successfully animate human faces. You know what I'm talking about.

Yes it does, and I'd imagine Nintendo would demand a certain level of creativity.

I bet the Metroid game for Wii U will look that good. Hell, the Zelda demo for Wii U looked better than Uncharted 3 at times.

Even though the rumor is probably false I do expect Nintendo to have a western studio make a new Metroid game this gen.  Like I said a few days ago, Metroid Prime western First Person style gameplay is much more popular then the Japanese 2D/3rd person style gameplay so Nintendo will make the next Metroid more western style again.  Since Retro is probably working on something new now, Nintendo is going to find a different western studio to make the next Metroid.

Of course whether it'll be Epic or not remains to be seen.  Personally I'd think Valve would be a better choice since their previous work like Half-Life and Portal would give me more faith in them doing a great Metroid then any other western studio that isn't Retro.

Ironically Half-Life and Portal to an extent are the exact reason I wouldn't want Valve doing Metroid.

I expect a Western developer to handle the next Metroid as well. I think Valve or Epic would do fine because neither would be making the game beyond Nintendo's influence though their size probably allows them more freedom than most other companies. If nothing else, Nintendo probably wouldn't have to do as much handholding like they originally did with Retro Studios (as well Rare and Silicon Knights for that matter).

He did not specify what changes were made though.
