More GTA V rumors - "2012 Likely"

Sources close to Rockstar Games say latest installment in blockbuster franchise is already getting final touches; 2012 release "pretty likely."

Saying that Rockstar Games is working on a new Grand Theft Auto game isn't exactly a bold prediction. However, sources close to the Take-Two Interactive subsidiary have confirmed to GameSpot that the next installment in the blockbuster series is "well underway," and is already having final touches such as minigames being applied to it. The source said a 2012 release was "pretty likely."

Unfortunately, the sources would not divulge any further details on the project, which is already the subject of much speculation. A recent set of casting calls from a talent agency point to the game as being set in a Los Angeles-like metropolis, with a motley crew of California characters being filled for a voice-over session. Prior rumors had the game being set in the Miami clone Vice City.

As of press time, Rockstar reps did not have any comment on casting calls, the game's setting, or whether a new GTA was even in development.

rockstar really seems to have a talent for making fun games, so it'll probably be great, but ... I do admit I find the whole vice-city shtick kind of stupid.  I'd much rather have one of their trademark sandbox games in some less stupid setting, e.g. red-dead-redemption, etc.

I was watching a trailer for the upcoming military-fights-against-invading-aliens movie, and somebody in the trailer cried out "New York - Berlin - London - Tokyo have all fallen to the invaders ... WE MUST NOT LOSE LA!!!" ... and I'm thinking "ehhhh, now let's not be too hasty about this ... maybe let 'em have LA, and ..."]

Apparently Nintendo had a share holders meeting today where Iwata took blame for the failure of 3DS to meet sales goals and punished himself and all the execs responsible with pay cuts and bonus reductions...

I think the 3DS isn't a failure but rather the entire industry that is embracing 3D has failed on: nobody (meaning the majority) want it, and nobody wants to pay extra for it. You can't force me to like something by giving me more of it.

Being a "market of one", as Iwata put it, isn't relevant when few wants that one.

The price cut should help a lot towards getting the 3DS moving along. We should notice some immediate effect in sales, so it will be interesting to compare sales the month before with sales the month after.

Nintendo stock has been going down so, I doubt their making to much off it.  I remember Iwata being paid under a Mil. Already.

Iwata made something like $736,000 in salary, but 2.1 million with bonuses last year.

The discrepancy is because it was down 21% earlier in the day, but rose back up to -12%.

I read the story many hours before i posted it, so it's been sitting in an open tab since earlier in the day. I didn't see the edit until it was mentioned, and at that point I had already closed the tab. (almost thought I was going crazy for a second)

How will the 3DS price effect the Wii U? Honestly, I see Nintendo's investors asking them to change the name "Wii U" to something different due to the similarity to the name "Wii." They would do this out of fear that the consumer might get confused and hurt sales.

That is a good question, and I think right out the gate this 3DS pricing fiasco is going to greatly influence the U's pricing when it launches. Nintendo pulled a Sony. PS2 was so great and critcally acclaimed they release a $600 system, it blew up in their faces.  Nintendo could not believe they gained market share up the wazoo with both the DS and Wii and thought, "$250, everyone will buy it." I'm glad it had a slow start now it may mean a $300 Wii U.

Yeah, Nintendo blundered by pricing the 3DS so high. But at least its not as big of a blunder as the PS3, because unlike the PS3 the 3DS price can be lowered without it selling for a huge loss, and remember the PS3 was the last system to launch so it right away was faced with stiff competition. The 3DS is the first handheld of its generation, so it didn't have to compete with anything when it launched.

Well, they have said they are looking into the possibility. You have to remember that it will tax the system though, the Wii U itself has to process and handle all the video and stuff that appears on the Wii U controllers (the controllers don't do any of it). That means a second controller would take away processing power and memory that a publisher can use in a game if they support a second controller.
