Sega: Mature Market on Wii 'Viable'

Mature Wii Gamers, Sega just can't quit you.

In an interview with IndustryGamers, Sega West President Mike Hayes comments on previous quotes from Sega executives, saying that any quotes that said Sega was dropping mature game development on Wii were "erroneous".

Hayes commented on the mature game market on the Wii, saying "Is it going to be as big as the Teen or Mature market that exists on the Xbox 360 or PS3 platforms? Certainly not.   Is it viable, because the cost of development on the Wii is significantly less than those other platforms? Then, potentially the answer is yes."

This comes after various statements from Sega executives regarding the potential for future mature-rated games on Wii. Early this year, Sega Studio Director Constatine Hantzopoulos stated that Sega would be unlikely to develop new mature-rated titles for Wii after the market failure of games like Dead Space Extraction.

Those comments came several months after Hayes said that it would be arrogant to pull out of the mature-game market on Wii simply because their own games wouldn't sell.

The most recent quote from Sega on this topic occurred just two weeks ago, when Hayes stated that Madworld was a mismatch on Wii.

Sega published several mature-rated games in 2009: The Conduit, Madworld, and House of the Dead: Overkill.

Nice Moonwalk there, Hayes.  ::)   I look forward to the next stupid thing to come out of Sega PR, which will once again reverse this.

I think the things Hayes said previously was taken out of context.

I've never been more confused about who I am as a gamer.

Sega loves us; Sega hates us.  They blame us for poor sales of MadWorld; they say the game met expectations.

Somebody hold me.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

What I find funny about this is that Hayes is backpedalling while referring to other Sega employees, but he was the one saying, effectively, that mature titles are a "mismatch" on Wii.  I mean, the whole "mismatch" thing was a DIRECT QUOTE.  There was no context, because it came right out of his mouth!

"Is it going to be as big as the Teen or Mature market that exists on the Xbox 360 or PS3 platforms? Certainly not."

I like how he says this as though he has any proof of it.

So he's going to look gamers in the eye and tell us that the console that has sold nearly twice as many as either of the other consoles isn't going to have a teen or mature market as big as them? That's seriously the biggest load of crap ever.

With management like this, is it any wonder why Sega's development has been as much of a mess as it's been recently?

Somebody seriously needs to put a muzzle on these guys.  They need to have a pocket lawyer saying, "Whoa, whoa, whoa...you just asked a question regarding Wii development.  Stop the interview.  That's it, we're done."

Somebody at Sega needs to study PR from Nintendo. Nintendo PR executives, like Cammie Dunaway, have practically mastered the art of doing a interview where she actually says very little. In this case, you have a top Sega exec basically having to say that a lower level exec was talking out of his ass.

Sega just needs to stop talking and either keep making games or take them elsewhere.

Sega's PR is secretly run by Hideo Kojima?
